Hello, I have had IBs for years and I have recently found out that I also have candida, which is a sensitivity to yeast. I was wondering if there were any hints or suggestions as to how this will effect my IBS???? It was suggested that I take psyllium however, it is't working well with my tummy. Any suggestions would be wonderful!! At a loss, Kelly

..welcome to the boards. I've just posted on the Eating for IBS board about candida, or suspected candida. What tests did you have to find out whether you had it or not?

well, after numerous visits to various GI specialists, i enlisted the help of a natropath...an iridologist (pardon the spelling). I found out about the ibs through the specialist and i followed heather's diet, and it worked but i went off it for a while so i went to him and he informed me i had candida. I don't know that much about it just what he told me. He put me on a diet similar to heather's but i think her's works much better. I guess my question is, should i follow heather's or the candida one? and how will the candida diet affect my ibs? wow, that was a mouthful! how did you find out about yours?

The doctors I've seen over here in the UK are next to useless. I really want to see a natropath, I've heard some good things about them...
Ok, onto the subject of which diet to choose - really it's an individual thing, like some people can't tolerate things that other people can, that sort of thing. My advice is do some elimination - do Heather's diet for a month, see how you feel then do the other one for a month - a bit of trial and error is needed with all of these things, but as I say, everyone's different and can handle different things etc.

You're right, I should've just don't that from the start because this psyllium has put my poor gut in a fit and now my whole system is out of wack! Aside from that, I would definately recommend a natropath as they seem to know which vitamis and minerals you should be taking and honestly, i do feel great minus the psyllium problem =) thanks and good luck!

...so far guess work as I say, because my doctors are absolute rubbish and won't listen to me. So I have been doing a food / liquid / symptoms diary - and have researched c/albicans. I realise that self diagnosis is a bit of a dangerous thing, but I remember feeling just like this before I went off the bread and sugar, but when I went off the bread/sugar/carbs I was feeling fine and my gerd was fine and I felt great....but now after tonnes of carbs/sugar I feel bleh again.....so I'm going to alter my diet again and go from there, if I don't feel any better - doctors I go!!

...is a SFS, but a notoriously harsh one! I'd suggest you change to another SFS - it'll do the same kind of thing but will be easier on your tum. I was psyllium for a while and had major side effects, but am now on Acacia and love it.
Follow both diets as much as possible! Heather's diet is more about HOW you eat than what you eat - no triggers, obviously but then it's all about SF before IF etc.

Thats what I remembered when someone said they were on psyllium when they had candida. So as I have acacia I'm going to start taking it again - all of these diet changes, its confuuuuuusing meeeeeeeeeeeeee

What else did the naturopath say about a candida diet? No yeast? Flour? Details would def. help!
You can likely do both.

if your ibs symptoms are infact, candida, you can hope that with adherance to a candida diet - that your symptoms will actually disappear...if people take heathers diet to the extreme of lots of white stuff (instead of millet, quinoa etc) you can be susceptible to candida. I am an iridologist and its very clear to see it in the eye....I say give the candida diet a try for 3 months (you may have some nasty symptoms early on) because its very nutritious and you can get better instead of just 'managing' the symptoms of IBS which is your other alternative!! good luck!!

unfortunately - a diet has to be stuck to for three months to really start seeing results...sometimes you see the results earlier on - but 3 months is the minimum time most naturopaths would suggest...

do both diets at once? Just curious. What or how would you eat since these seem like two totally different diets. Or am I wrong.

The IBS diet is mainly about avoiding triggers and using the how-to-eat guidelines NOT what to eat. I know many people eat alot of white flour and sugar cos it's easy, but GF, sugar free is possible so anything should be possible! Even if it's just a case of taking a SFS and minimising IF or something.

..thank you. I am hoping that with some percerverence (sp?) that I will find what is really wrong with me, even if docs won't listen to me. Everyone thinks I'm mad, even my family, who really have no idea and that is the hardest thing, trying to explain to them when all you want is a hug and for one of them to say, it'll be ok, I'm here! but thats another story - ha!
I am going to give it a go and I will do the three months, I was off GF and sugar for about 2 months prior to going on to the ibs diet and I felt great - although all I was eating was IF which made me trigger but apart from that I felt grand!! Thanks - you're advice has cheered me up a bit (still in the cold turkey from sugar depression stage)...thanks again x

go for it!! I feel sooo much better off refined carbs and sugar - I stay on a diet a bit similar to a candida one _ I get gasy and stuff sometimes but I prefer that and having a clear head to everything being quiet and C adn feeling sooo depressed and lethargic!!

The candida diet is very restrictive, however it is only temporary until your symptoms improve. Everyone can tolerate small amounts of yeast, but its important to determine your threshold otherwise the dreaded candida will return.
So a yeast free diet involves avoiding:
* All sugar and sweet foods including chocolate and sweets
* Beer and wine
* Cheeses (they all grow mould readily)
* Dried spices and herbs (use fresh instead)
* Jams, honey and spreads
* Over ripe or bruised fruit and vegetables
* Peanuts, peanut butter, pistachio nuts
* Preserved products: salami, bacon, ham, pate, sausage.
* Processed foods generally
* Processed tomatoes (eg. semi-dried, dried and tinned) and tomato products like tomato paste and tomato soup.
* Refined flour products: white bread, pizza, cakes etc.
* Soft drinks and mixers like tonic and dry ginger
* Yeast extracts like Vegemite and Marmite
* Yeasts and fungi (eg, mushrooms)
So basically this means avoiding all foods that contain sugar (including fructose) and refined flours (as these feed candida) and any foods that many contain mould or fungus. I have a compleat guide to yeast free eating that I can email you if you're interested.
It can never hurt to try a 'detection diet' for candida, ie follow the yeast free diet for 2 weeks and see if you're symptoms improve.

Thanx Linz, you're right, I probably should have written what you can eat rather then what you can't
So yep lots of fresh vegies except sweet veges, like sweet potato, sweet corn, beetroot and carrot.

THANKYOU!!! they are 2 totally different diets! that was my main problem with the candida diet and how it would effect my ibs because everything that is "safe" for the ibs is harmful for the candida and vice versa. ugh, it's stressful!
