Please help me clarify? In April of 2002 I was diagnosed with ibs after undergoing a colonoscopy as well as other routine exams etc. by my gastroenterologist. He was unable to determine definatly what was wrong with me. He prescribed Hyoscyamine, and citrucel. My symtoms are and were as follows: abdominal cramping,mucus in the stool, bleeding from the rectum,abnormal stool, gas , and moving my bowels several times in a 3 or4 hour period. Sometimes it hits me in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon,lasts for about 3 or 4 hour then I'm alright for the rest of the day. This cycle lasts for about 7 to 10 days, then I am completely back to normal. Again, this whole episode comes once a month. I have had a partial hysterectomy (vaginal, with bladder & rectal repair for prolapse.) I am in the process of reading and slowly implementing some of the dietary changes in Heather's book Eating for IBS, however as I read I'm not sure that the frequency of my attacks (monthly), and the symptom of passing blood are accurate symptoms of IBS. I'm under the impression that people with a definite IBS diagnosis suffer attacks more often, and more constant. Please help me to clarify my thinking? Thank you, Crimson

Hi Crimson,
For me, my IBS symptoms surface daily. Some days they are mild and other days they are really fierce! I take Hyoscyamine (which is a generic form of Levbid) which is a large-muscle relaxer, fiber choice/benefiber/citrucel supplement, and have been following Heather's Diet for more than a month and it's stabilized my symptoms.
However, rectal bleeding does not sound like a symptom of IBS. I suggest talking to your GI about this, as that sounds kinda scary to me. The cycle of your attacks sounds unusual to me also, but I'm not going to attempt to try and figure that one out. Call your doc. If you don't think that he/she is taking you seriously, find another one. A lot of people here have great doctors that they can freely talk to and call up without them making you feel like a hypocondriac.

Sounds just like my ulcerative colitis symptoms. Especially the cramping, blood and mucus. But if you had a colonoscopy they would have seen that right off the bat. UC (which falls more under inflamatory bowel disease) is different than IBS. A lot of the diet suggestions for IBS work for it though, sometimes anyway. Did the dr. mention ulcerative colitis at all?
