I want a hobby so I decided to take up crocheting. My grandma and great-aunt are always giving us these beautiful blankets.

Anyone out there have any tips or suggestions for getting started?

There are some great books out there. Are you right or left handed? There is one book I think is called "Learn to Crochet in One day" which I learned from. I'm left handed so my mom-in-law couldn't teach me but this book was great! And now I'm off to the races. Oh yeah, and start with a medium hook and a nice crochet cotton. Wool is tough to start with and you don't want to start on anything too fine.

Have you thought about cross-stitch? It's really nice too and you can make some really beautiful pictures as well as other things. I've been doing that for years.

If you get stuck let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I tried cross stitching once. It was wonderful! Any tips? The one I made was a tablecloth and napkins...but the design was there...you just had to fill in the stitches. Do you know where you can get something like that...thanks!

P.S. I want to make something for some people who lost their 6 year-old son. Any suggestions (they're not Christian...and neither am I)?

I usually do counted cross-stitch. It's really easy and I always enjoy it. Where to get stuff? I'd say check out your local craft stores as they usually have a pretty good selection.

What to make for your friends? Well, there are cards you could stitch. Or maybe a sympathy verse that you could frame. Again, check out your local craft stores or the internet. I'm in Canada so I get everything from the store my mother-in-law manages. Can't help you there. Do you have a Michael's craft store? They are usually really good. We just got one here and I spent WAY too much time there.

Hope I helped!

On a personal note, any special reason you are not a Christian? Jesus has been a very big support for me and for many others. He can do amazing things in our lives. I hope you don't think I'm pushing but I am interested in why people have or haven't made that choice. I didn't come to Christ for awhile but now am very glad I did. If you want more information or just want me to leave it let me know.

By the way, I love the pic! Where do you work? I think I missed some of that as I'm new to the board and all.

Good luck and let me know what you decide about the cross-stitching. I'm always up to give help to new stitchers. I love to share my passions and stitching is definitely one of them.

Smile!

Thanks for the cross-sticthing ideas! We do have a Michaels, I think...I'll have to check.

I'm glad that you are religious and that this has helped you. I am also religious--I'm an orthodox Jew! I was born Jewish, and I love it! Being religious is a wonderful thing, I think--we're very lucky to have this in our lives!!!

I am a kindergarten teacher. It's AMAZING--best job in the world. This was my first year teaching--and I hadn't studied education. It was tough! But amazing--and well worth all the hard work. Now I can't wait to have kids of my own, G-d willing, in the right time! What do you do? How old are your kids--they're so cute!

*hugs*

Fair answer thank you. Yes, being religious is very wonderful and has helped me a lot.

I, too, am a teacher but never really got to work as we moved several times and then we had kids and decided I would stay home. I think it's a lot better for the kids than day care. I'm here for them and can teach them what I want them to know both religious and secular.

I'm sure God will bless you with children when it is the right time.

Take care and let me know what you find!

That's SO GREAT! I want to be a stay at home mom also. I also agree--in the right time, G-d willing, we'll have children!!!

Are you planning on home schooling your children, sending them to private school? My hubby have discussed both...I guess we'll decide more definately when we actually have kids!

I think this board is AMAZING! Everyone here is so respectful of other's beliefs, opinions, etc. Thank you for that Corinne!

I crochet afghans as well! I only work on them in the winter, but have made quite a few of them.

When I was in high school my boyfriend (at the time) his mom bought me a book (really thick) with afghans for each season or special occassion (ie: baby blankets, winter fireplace blankets etc). Anyways - the greatest thing about the book was that it also had each stitch and how to do it in the back. It was wonderful because you could choose a simpler blanket and then learn more and more as you go!

It is wonderful. I would suggest finding a book like that. Also - you could go on the internet and look up patterns and tips. My grandmother does that all the time because she has been crocheting for so long she is sick of the same patterns over and over!

Anyways - good luck!
If I can help you in anyway I will do my best.
I wish there was a way to send you a copy of some of the patterns.
Hmmm - maybe I could photo copy some of the pages for you....and then mail them?

Hi; I do both crochet and crossstitch and love them both. Crochet is an easy relaxing hobby to can just relax with. You could check out Annie's Attic and Crazy for crossstitch.com for info on both of these. They are both on the web.

I got the "Knitting for Dummies" book last year for Christmas which really helped get me going. I checked, but I didn't see a crochet for dummies. The did have "Complete Idiot's Guide to Knitting and Crocheting". Not that I think you're an idiot or a dummy, but I know I just really like how they make everything simplified!

Also, you may want to check out a craft store. I'm not sure what you have there, but here at Michaels and A.C. Moore, they have crafting classes, and sometimes they have crochet. You can check there scheduled classes online.

No we're going to send our children to the closest public school. I don't know if you guys have two publicly funded school systems or not. We have the Public system and the Catholic system. The biggest difference is of course that there is no religion taught in the public schools and Catholicism taught in their schools. We could send our kids there but I don't really want them to learn all that stuff as it might be confusing to them. We don't do the rosary and cross ourselves and celebrate First Communion and so on the way the Catholics do.

It's been quite a discussion with our church parenting group as all our kids are about the same age and some advocate the public, some the Catholic (at least they'll get some Christian teaching), some the Christian school (pay your own way) and some do home-schooling. We decided against home-schooling as we want our kids to have the social aspect and to learn about other cultures and religions. And maybe they can help their non-Christian friends come to Christ. (We're Pentecostal which teaches us to spread the word of God to everyone.) All that and Emily (4) has made a friend in the neighbourhood who will go to the public school.

Wow. Sorry about the long discourse but it's been quite a topic around here lately. It does depend on the school as well. If the teachers aren't very good and the principal doesn't really care then it would change my mind real quick. We have a friend who is a principal at a school in the city so she knows everyone and we ask her about it. That helps a lot. And touring the school too. It looks like a good school. And since both of us are teachers it's not like we won't be able to help with homework or enrichment activities on the side. Emily actually can read simple sentences already. (She turned four two weeks ago.)

I so agree with you Ruchie that it's wonderful that everyone can express their thoughts and beliefs and everyone respects that. We don't have to all agree but we don't have to attack one another about it either.

I am so excited to have found this place. In case you can't tell I like to talk! I've noticed some others do too so maybe it's a good thing we have to type everything. It slows us down! And others can get their two cents in as well.

The only down side I've found to being a mom is that I rarely get time to myself. If I can find five minutes when I am totally alone it's a miracle. Even now my kids are watching a show but they come over here all the time and cuddle while I type or they fight and I have to stop and get them and so on. Even the bathroom isn't private! Yikes, that can be bad some days I'll tell you.

But I love it and would recommend it to anyone. We don't have two cars or a fancy camping trailer or go on big holidays and we don't go out too often but we love it just the same. The Lord meets our needs and sometimes there is a little left over for the wants.

*hugs* right back at you.

Corinne

If you get the opportunity to stay home with your children, I would highly recommend it. (Aren't I getting ahead of myself That's me, my mind is always racing!) I'm not knocking working mothers, because I know I was fortunate to be able to stay home with my two boys when they were little. Although we were SO BROKE. If you looked at our finances on paper, I should have never been able to stay home with them. But we did without a lot, living in a tiny apartment and sharing one vehicle. I remember friends calling me to go to McDonald's with them and having to turn them down, because I could not afford to go! (that's bad when you can't afford a Happy Meal!) My boys (13 months apart) and I would take long walks, bicycle rides, sit outside in the plastic wading pool, etc. and just enjoy being together. Our big treat was to walk to the nearby grocery store parking lot and get a 25 cent soft drink (generic) out of the machine. We laugh now about how poor we were then, but I wouldn't trade those times for anything in the world.
When my boys went to school, I decided to teach so that I would be close to them. It was great having the same hours and vacations as them. You just have to enjoy them while they are little, because time does fly. My oldest will be going off to college next year (boo-hoo), and the other is only a year behind.
May God bless you (when you are ready) with children as beautiful as you are! (Gosh, I sound like your mother!)

Wow! I had no idea there was public school AND Catholic school in Canada!

Having a lot of money isn't everything, that's for certain! We also don't have a lot of money--but we're VERY happy! It's what you do with what you've got, I think, that counts!

LOL YOu're very funny...but it's true after all! I think many of us like to talk....can you imagine all of us together in one room? LOL That would be a site!

Your children sound wonderful! Do you want to have more? I don't know how many kids I want--but I taught 21 this year and I LOVED it! There was actually one day I was the ONLY teacher with the kids for about an hour and a half. They were SO SUPER! They understood that I couldn't give all of them my undivided attention when there was one of me and so many of them. I was so impressed!

Enjoy your family--they're GREAT!

Thanks for the hug

How kind of you Lana! I went to Michaels and got an EZ Instruction book and some yarn. I've also found a few patterns on the internet. I think that I found the book you were referring to, so you don't need to go to the trouble of sending them (but thanks anyway!)

How long did it take before you became good. At the rate I'm going, the baby blanket that I'm crocheting will be for my kids' kids'!!

Your so funny Jules!

I remember how I learnt! My grandmother taught me...she would teach us everytime when we went to her house - then one day she was cleaning out her scrap wool and she gave me it all! I was about 13 at the time and so excited!!!! Because before that I would only crochet when we went to vist my grandmas to visit about once a month.

My first blanket when really big on one and the other was not straight. Just a mess really! LOL.

I haven't really gotten all the quick at it because I watch tv while I make them. My blankets will take me all winter to do one. But it's also because I work during the day. So I only work on it in the evening and then on weekends.

So I am not that quick, but I find that the larger the hook the faster the afghan is to make because you are covering more space, of course!

Well good luck Jules and have fun!

I am sure your grandchildren will enjoy the blanket! LOL

Hi, Ruchie -

I haven't done any needlework in a long time, but this occurred to me for a gift for your friends who lost their child - maybe a cross-stitched picture frame? Sometimes you can buy them in kits - at least I've seen some - and I imagine they might be comforted by the combination of your heartfelt work and his picture.

As for real comfort for their grief, God promises us in Psalm 147:3 that "He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds." I'll pray that He will draw very near to them, in a tangible way, and bring them "the peace that passes understanding."

Blessings from another Christian friend,
Kaybee C

Ruchie, I meant "another Christian friend" as in, in addition to Corinne! Didn't mean to confuse you - I had read the other posts and I know you're an Orthodox Jew - and I have great respect - so I actually chose a verse from the Old Testament. I confess, even though our associate pastor and his wife teach at Hebrew Union College, and I have lots of Jewish friends, I don't know what's in the Tanakh - just thought the Psalms were! Sometimes I can put my foot in my mouth even online! But you're so sweet and encouraging - I know you understand!

Blessings,
Kaybee C
