You worked at the NASD? Wow, I never knew this. So you know somewhat about what I do for a living...

Why yes I do. I have had many jobs. In that one, I had to sort through resumes and classify them by experience. I also answered benefits questions and gave typing tests to new potential hires. And I coded the current employee work plans to reflect which ones should come up for a pay raise (hint: ALWAYS fill in each blank on performance review cards, especially in the goals section).

But the best part was def helping interview. I got to be the BS detector. Nelly, they said, you're the BS detector. So I took notes on their education and quizzed them about simple stuff they'd have to know to have a, say, history degree. Or economics. Or whatever. The one thing I remember is that the ones who asked about benefits never got the job. Hence I NEVER ask about benefits during a job interview, I wait for them to bring it up.

But most of the experience the people had went mainly over my head, cos I didn't know anything about the securities industry. There's a lot to know, it seems!! And you'd be surprised how many had been suspended for illegal trading!

I am not ready to get off the soap box and never will. I am not ashamed of my feelings about smoking or drug use or alcholism or pornography or wearing fur. And besides, smoking is bad for IBS so saying some of the negatives of it could make someone who hasn't stopped smoking maybe quit. Really though how many smokers would want a loved one like their child to smoke? and how many people if they went back in time 200 years wouldn't tell people how bad smoking is for health? If people had known lives could have been saved. Like Elizabeth II's father George VI. He was one of the first people to die from smoking where a connection was finally thought of.
I know it isn't pleasant to be told by people that smokers stink (not like IBSers don't!) but they have the right to clean air too. And the cost! I often think of the things I could have had if my dad hadn't been a drunk and smoking loser! Maybe that pony I wanted. I couldn't run for much of my life because my lungs were so awful from second hand smoke and I already mentioned my grandma so I have the right to be offended by smoking. Getting terrible bronchitis every year of my life made me really hate my poor lungs.
Yet I am not really paying attention to anyone here saying they smoke, that is, don't think I will hold it against anyone or anything. Although when people smoke around kids I want to freak out! So I don't think berating a bad dirty habit is wrong. Of course it isn't against the law so my opinion doesn't mean anything, but I hope it can be respected as an opinion and nothing more.

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

I respect your opinion and I agree that smoking is a terrible habit.

However, I think there are many other things that are just as bad that get overlooked because they are more "socially acceptable". It bothers me that people find it completely acceptable to say to a smoker "you have a disgusting habit, you stink, you're ruining my air" but we would never even think about saying to someone who has an obescity problem "you should eat less, you look disgusting, etc."

I'm not trying to offend anyone by saying this!!! Please don't think I am.....but honestly....it just bothers me that smokers get talked down to and berated all the time while people with other addictions/bad habits get overlooked.

If I've offended anyone just tell me and I'll gladly delete this post....but I just wanted to voice my opinion as well.

Ok well first of all you say your not ready to get off your soap box how about that High Horse you riding? Are you telling me you have no bad habbits that would offend someone or upset somenone! Weren't you the one who got poision Ivy on her butt from peeing in the bushes? Well I think that is gross and disgusting.

In other words people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones!

Just my opinion!

Well, it beats the meth habit I used to have, which really was antisocial. Baby steps, eh?

Most smokers are as considerate as they can be, especially around non-smokers. I don't smoke inside, or in the car, or at cafes and bars if I'm with non smokers, and I think you'd find most of the smokers here are the same. There's not so much smokers and non-smokers, as considerate people and rude busstuds.
