I try to follow the IBS safe diet as closely as I can but I just can't seem to give up my one a day Dr. Pepper.

Does anyone else have something you can't give up even though you know it is bad for you?

Just curious to see if I am the only one.

Hey Janey! Good to see you around here! How's my beloved espana?
I know Ashley (Spicey) still drinks at least one coke a day, so you're not alone. I have various cheats, like real tea and a very occasional coffee (only when I REALLY need it). I was snowed in at my parents' house this weekend and in one meal had salad (even though I had bread with it), chicken (no problem there), green beans with some teeny bits of ham, lots of red and white wine, and .... the teensiest bit of ice cream, like a quarter of a cup. Suffice it to say I had one of the worst D attacks I can remember. The pain was so bad that I thought I was going to pass out and throw up at the same time. I really am usually so disciplined about cheating, and I can usually get away with a bit of cheese, or a mexican dip with sour cream, or even beer or other alcohol. I guess the fact that I haven't slept in weeks (law school) and I was traveling around and stuff didn't help.
My usual "can't give up" cheats are pretty much all alcohol. Not that I drink that often, or even that much, but when I do get a chance to go out, I don't feel like sipping iced tea all night. I can almost always get away with it, especially if I have something other than beer, but lately the hangovers have been so bad that it's almost not worth it. Am I getting old???

Chocolate. I am ok with it as long as I eat small quantaties on a full stomach. I was really bad over the holidays with it. I have just recently been drinking a bit of pop. I am getting tired of tea, water and soy chocolate milk. Sunday I made the mistake of drinking a half of glass of Canda Dry ginger ale and eating a slice of homemade apple pie. I had the worst gas pains for about 3 hours afterwards.

It is good to be back. Being away during Christmas made it difficult to get on the boards. Too busy doing all the shopping. Since I have been back I was sick with the flu and then very busy with work and my daughters practices, fundraisers, and games. She is on the cheering squad at the high school.

Espana is darn cold right now. Coldest it has been since we have lived here. I heard it is supposed to be down as low as 29 degrees F Friday. Burrrrrrr! Southern Spain never seens temps like this. I am so thankful that my new house has heat. If we were in the old house we would be freezing.

Sorry to hear that you had such a bad D attack. I hate those that make you feel like passing out and throwing up. They are the worst. At least you weren't out in a public bathroom. Have a find a silver lining in all situations.

This may be out last year here so we are trying to enjoy everything. There are so many things that we take for granted.

Hmm.. maybe a smaller list would be the items that I was able to give up! LOL

Just kidding. Been really bad lately so it hasn't helped.

1) Chocolate
2) Soda (working on that slowly!)
3) Anything with trace amounts of dairy in it (cookies, cakes, etc.) - never full dairy, though!

I'm such a sucker for potato chips! I'm still trying to buy them with lower fat content, I just can't go completely without them, and baked just doesn't do it for me. I'm resorting to the Kettle Cooked chips... they have 7 grams of fat per serving.

I love potato chips.... but I've been having them on sandwiches to take the sting out a bit. We have something called grain waves over here, which are multigrain chips (instead of potato or corn), and I can't give those up either!
I'm also a sucker for Hell pizza with real cheese on, and for potato wedges with sour cream.

the big one: chocolate.. and I ADORE chicken wings (skin is the best part of the bird) so on occasion will sneak one or 2.. can't do too many... but I have been good and skipped my favorite place for them- the sauces aren't safe and the chicken is not only with skin but fried before the sauce is applied! I have been really tempted this week though adn with my tummy already acting up, its really hard to not do it..

Red meat, sorta. I had no problem giving up beef and pork, but I still love my game meats - venison, moose, etc. I don't get to eat it that often, because obviously it depends on how hunting season was for the people we know, but when it's around, I do eat it.

And that's really it... man, I guess my willpower is better than I ever gave it credit for!

Hi Cutie!

I've reverted back to a lot of my old bad habits. For one thing, I couldn't stay off coffee for long. I went without my beloved java for a year, but now I'm back on it. I have to have something in my tummy before hand, like a soluble fiber, and I have to restrict my coffee portion to only one cup of the real stuff, then one cup of decaf, and that's ALL. Even so, I have slight cramping. I just ignore it.

I also have a little dairy -- just a tiny bit -- in my salad every day (lite Ranch dressing), and there's milk in milk chocolate, also which I have every day.

Another thing I'm bad about: I stopped eating every few hours. I have only two meals a day -- around 10:00 and then around 4:00. Oh, and here's another baddie: I never have a soluble fiber supplement anymore. Oh, I'm BAD!

I think if I was able to give up coffee PERMANENTLY, I'd have no problems whatsoever; all the other bad stuff is minor compared to my coffee addiction. Whenever I go to ihop, where they have the BEST coffee of anyplace, including Starbuck's, I have more than one cup, and even though I take Equalactin, I have cramps about an hour after the coffee. I don't care. See how I am?

For whatever reason, I can handle cakes and cookies and stuff in a moderate amount even if they contain dairy and such. So I will admit that I cheat on that the most. I can't give up eating chocolate - but I only can eat the good stuff like semi-sweet and nice dark chocolate otherwise it's bad news.

Other than that I'm good about just drinking water and don't really have the desire to cheat with alcohol. Most everything else I wouldn't really eat anyhow.

I'm a pretty boring person. Never have done coffee- don't like the taste. Don't do very much sugar. No junk food. Seriously. It doesn't come in the house. No McDonalds or other fast food. No red meat, cause it's just too hard to digest. Not worth the tradeoff. Hardly any dairy, cause I'm a singer and I don't want the gunk in my throat.
Like Shell, I think my one guilty pleasure is a bowl of popcorn during a movie (or episode of "Deadwood"!)with canola spread, a little Parmesan cheese, and fake salt.
Wow! It's true, I have become the twigs-&-gravel eater that I used to make fun of.

I have had a really hard time giving up popcorn. I LOVE popcorn. Last time I ate it though I had a bad D/cramps attack for 3 days afterwards. Ugh.

I think if I get brave enough to try it again, I'll have 1-2 cups only (instead of the whole microwave bag! ) and eat it after a IBS safe dinner.

Sometimes I get discouraged because I miss certain things sooooooo much... the things I miss the most are

Tillamook Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese
Parmesan Cheese
Mozarella Cheese
Havarti Cheese
Brie
Cream Cheese
Cottage Cheese
Ok...any kind of cheese!
Things made with cheese...lasagna, manicotti, omelets, etc.
Yogurt
Frozen Yogurt
French Fries
Potato Chips
Sodas
Hamburgers
Pork Chops

I know, I know, there are soy/rice substitutes for many of these things, but they just don't taste the same. They are edible, but wow do I miss the real things!

Beer and the occasional bad take-away. Beer makes me gassy so I shouldn't go there, but I like it. And sometimes I'm REALLY bad and get takeaway fish'n'chips - it's hard being a bit more tolerant of fat levels...I've pushed the limit too far loads of times.

Hi Tia,

WOW, you have a good memory! Yep, I was drinking a coffee substitute called SoyFee; if you do a search, you'll find a lot of posts about it. I drank the stuff for about six months. It has many healthy benefits, and of all the coffee substitutes I tried, it's by far the best. If you've given up coffee and you really miss the stuff, give SoyFee a try. I tried to convince myself that SoyFee was every bit as good as coffee -- you'll read that in my posts -- and I don't want to discourage you, but after a very long time of consuming the stuff, I had enough.

My big mistake was having a sip of the incredible coffee at ihop. Then another sip. It's a terrible 42-year addiction that I can't seem to kick; of everything I've had to give up, coffee has been the most difficult. (Sorry, I know this is not encouraging for you.)

I'm stable now, such that I very seldom have an attack. Coffee is one of the things I returned to. I bought a very tiny drip brewer that makes only two cups, one for me and one for my husband. After the real stuff, I brew decaf, one for me and one for my husband. So all I have in one day are two cups, one regular and one decaf. Oftentimes I end up with cramps, but they're minor and don't last long. I have chocolate soy milk beforehand, though, which I heat up in the mike (as cocoa), THEN I have my coffee. If I go out to a restaurant, like ihop, I don't have coffee at home, because theirs is the best anywhere. I have two cups at ihop, and even with the Equalactin I end up with cramps -- but, again, they're minor and don't last long. To me, it's worth it.

I know this is bad -- I certainly don't encourage it -- but you should know that, before Heather got ahold of me, I was brewing coffee in our 12-pot coffeemaker every day and drinking more than half of it over a very long period of time, easily 42 years when I was working. So I'm actually pretty proud of being able to restrict myself to only 1-2 cups a day. I shouldn't say that here, should I?

I'm sorry you're not feeling well, Tia, and I strongly recommend you stay clear of coffee until you get stable. It will happen, you just have to be patient. When I have an attack, I lay off the coffee and turn to my Tummy Mint tea (and of course my meds) until the attack is long gone.

Good luck.

Bev

I may give the soyfee a shot. I am one who drinks coffee for the flavor and not the caffeine. I managed to break my daily habit in three weeks with only one headache and a few bouts of extreme fatigue. I do cheat every once in a while and have a cup...I think the peppermint mochas from starbucks are what helped cause this latest bout. Breaking myself was hard and I was only drinking 2 -3 cups a day for 12 years...YES we should be proud of ourselves and feel free to brag on ourselves!

I appreciate your good wishes and your mama-like concern. This has been a frustrating 6 weeks and my husband though loving is so tired of hearing about my cramps and I KNOW my poofy belly isn't very attractive!

It's nice to have friends in common!

Hugs...

Did you buy one of those press things or did you brew it in a coffee maker? I may break down one day and buy some.

When I was first diagnosed, the doctor took me off the pill and caffiene immediately. I was D at the time, and with the antispasmodic, noticed a HUGE change. However, I've been on the pill almost 10 years now, and everything is changing! I just think it would help to give them up, but it's just too darn convenient!

Ice Cream. I know they make soy ice cream and I have tried it but some how it is just not as good as Breyer's. I have a small bowl of ice cream every night. But for some strange reason I can seem to handle dairy except butter and milk. I don't over do it but I can eat small portions of cheese, sour cream, and ice cream.

I've found that the only way I can stop this horrible pain, which is like labor, is to eat something else. It's as though my intestines may be quivering, but when something new enters the system, it has to stop and deal with the new stuff. What is actually happening?

I'm brand new to this group, and from Alabama. So what do you do about this terrible pain. Only way I can stop it is to eat something else, anything.
What's actually happening? Can't link it to any diarrea OR constipation. But I know when it's starting. Just need to keep something close by. Are there any pills you can take for this? :( [color:red] [/color]

I am VERY strict with my diet, and am at the point I rarely crave any no-nos. I have cheated with pancakes twice, and some baked goods that were high in fat and baked with triggers. I only rarely do that if I am very stable and on holidays.
OTHER than that, my only frequent cheat is... alcohol! And you know what, I am kinda ashamed that I have to drink. I mean, I am not an alcoholic, but I can't stand to be the one in the crowd that is out and can't drink. i am sure I will outgrow it, but I usually don't see very bad affects of it anyways.

ROFLMAO! Oh man, that's funny, Sheri!

What you don't know is that she mixes pieces of pepperoni, cheese, and deep fried onion rings with the popcorn. I can see right through her - trying to convince us that it's 'just' popcorn! Sheesh...
