My husband and I were at a restaurant called "The Top of the I" in Waikiki, Hawaii. We parked at the military parking lot and took one of those horse drawn carriages to the hotel the restaurant was in. He gave the waiter my engagement ring when I wasn't looking and when they served dessert the dessert was my ring! The ring was around a pretty cloth napkin on a plate and I nearly passed out when I saw it.

That was over 19 years ago and we are still smiling!

We were out for a friends birthday, half drunk at a nightclub. Admittedly being parents of a 5 month old this night was a big highlight for us. Jokingly I said to (now)DH "so when are you going to finally ask?" then turned around to talk to a friend when he laughed. The next minute he's in the middle of the nightclub down on one knee and asking! The guy that owned the place announced it over the loud speaker, we were made to have a dance and we got free drinks for the rest of the night.
Next morning I opened one eye and said "if you've woken up sober, feel free to not go ahead" and he just grinned and said "why would I want to do that".
But it was so spontaneous he didn't even have a ring!
Like I said, very unromantic but at least it was pretty original.

We were lying in bed in my apartment having an argument about politics. He just sorta- asked. Then we went back to arguing. The next day we got rings out of a gumball machine at the supermarket. A year later I got a real engagement ring (and so did he). He's not one for the grand gesture.

We went on a big paddle boat and had dinner. He proposed and I said yes and then ran to the closest bathroom!

Ill try to make this as short as possible......well it was just a normal morning - we both just woke up and were sitting around watching TV and he told me that I needed to go upstairs and get ready and be at the front door at 11:00am. So having NO idea why,I listened to him and went and got ready. Well at 11:00 our doorbell rang and when I opened it there was a limo sitting in front of our house. He (Bobby - my husband) told me to go get in so the driver let me in and I was expecting Bobby to be right behind me but he stayed at the house. So then I was REALLY confused but I just went along with it and we left. After driving for awhile we pulled up to the Hyatt at Lake Las Vegas - a very nice lakefront resort. So the driver let me out and there was a person waiting for me at the door who lead me down to their spa. When I walked in the door they said "You must be Stacey" and they handed me a dozen roses and a big gift bag of all their products. Then they gave me a massage, manicure and a pedicure. After that I got back in the limo and it took me home - when I walked in the door he had decorated the entire living room with TONS of candles and daisies (my favorite flower) EVERYWHERE! Then we sat down to a candle-lit dinner that he made himself (chicken and rice ) He also made a cake! Then after we finished eating he came in, got down on one knee and proposed to me with a BEAUTIFUL ring! He also had our song playing in the back ground! It was absolutely perfect and we've been married almost a year and a half now!

It was a bit weird for us as we'd already decided to get engaged a few months before, but hadn't done it properly.

The day after my last finals exam, Si and I went on holiday to Cornwall (as I hate flying). But the night before, we all went out as exams were over and Si got very drunk and got very mean. So we had a major barney and then had to get up after a few hours sleep to drive to Cornwall (it was the Jubilee celebration weekend so we left real early). So that was a GREAT start to our holiday.

This probably only makes sense to Brits ... but never mind.

That night we had a really romantic dinner in the hotel restaurant with champagne etc...and I kinda knew what was coming! After the main course we went outside with our champagne to watch the sunset from the cliff-top. Si got down on one knee and propsed there...with the ring we'd had designed! But as it was England, it was FREEZING. So we ran inside again.

My husband was housitting for his aunt. She has a gorgeous house with a jacuzzi. Well he called me at work to tell me to come by for dinner. When I got there he wouldn't let me in the kitchen. He made a great dinner and we sat in there very elegant dining room. He said he had made dessert. Cheesecake was what he said. He came back with a tray that was covered with a lid. He said to open it. Well I did and said where's the cheesecake? Not noticing the ring in the center of the plate surrounded by kiwi and strawberried. I looked back at him and he on one knee and said "Will you marry me?" I then realized duh what was in the tray. Of course I said yes and we have been married almost 7 years. We were 22 and 23 when we got married.

Later that night we spent some time in the jacuzzi with some champagne and well other fun.......

My hubby surprised me with a trip to Florida, said I needed a week to just relax on the beach and in the hot tub (his grandma has a house there we stay at with a pool and hot tub - it's AWESOME!). The second night we were there he took me to a really nice restuarant on the beach, we sat outside and it was beautiful! We went to watch the sunset, and then went for a walk on the beach really late that night when no one was out. We went down by the water and he got on one knee! I don't remember a thing he said to me....all I was thinking was, 'oh my gosh, this is it...this is what everyone waits for...I have to remember this...etc'.

It's funny because I look back and I should have seen signs - he was sweating like CRAZY on that walk and I was FREEZING...I kept asking why he was so hot. And on the plane on the way there, he had my ring in his jacket, and I asked if I could wear his jacket and he was like, 'Why, you have your own right??' Which he NEVER would have said to me....

We've been married about 2 years now!

Aww Cara that's such a cute story! I love what you were thinking in your head..that would so be me, and then I wouldn't remember what was actually being said.

How romantic with the sunset and all too - those are always great. Funny how you can look back now and see all the signs too that you didn't notice then

After dating for 2 weeks,we were going out for Pizza, (the best place to eat in a town with little to choose from). I was driving his truck, he was sitting beside me, he asked me to marry him. I had no problem say YES !!!!

It was definitely LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!! When our eyes first met, we both knew this was it, that we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. So, for me, that first magical moment was one not to be beat! We were married 4 months later in a huge church wedding, and have been together for almost 30 years. We love each other more every day and cannot imagine being away from each other, ever!!!

I thank God for bringing us together, every day!!! He is a great man! I love him.

We had been in the library studying (good 'ole college days), and had walked out to the car to go home. It was raining lightly, and I couldn't understand why my DH came to my side of the car. He took my hand, got down on his knees, and asked me to be his wife! We enjoyed a nice long smooch in the rain! That was over 16 years and two kids ago...and I still am crazy about the man!! He is the most wonderful fella on two feet!!

My moms sister kept telling me that she knew this guy....she kept telling him that she had a great neice. My uncle would stand behind her and silently mouth that I weighed over 300lbs. , (you would have to know my family to think this is really funny, it was). So, naturally he was afraid my uncle might be telling the truth.

To meet him, I had come for a visit and my aunt told me to get in the car, she had someone for me to meet. She called and told him the same thing. We met in a huge barn out in the country, he had some pet squirrels he had raised from tiny babies in a huge cage. He came in the barn and was standing on the opposite side from me, he looked around the cage with the sweetest smile......ahhhhhhhhh. We both knew right then that we loved each other!

I said to myself....He is mine, I am going to marry that boy!

It was a heart pounding, clock stopping, "I gotta get some of that" moment. It seemed like it lasted forever, and I can still see his young face every time I think of it.

I too knew that I would marry Charles the day we met. We met in October of 1985 and were married in January of 1986. During the 3.5 months between, we only spent two weeks together. Ours too was a match made in heaven...God is sooo Good!

Ours was just on the fly... kind of a funny story. Shane & I were home (yes, we lived together 1st). I was sitting at the computer and he was standing next to me.... we were just taking about "our future" you know we all have those talks when you have been together and don't really know where it is going...lol. I was checking email and Shane went to the bathroom..... when he came back out... I spun around in my chair and found him in front of me down on one knee.... looked at me with tears in his eyes and said..."you know what? lets do it.... (pause) lets get married" I think I said "ok" but I'm not sure... he then picked up the phone and called my Dad My Mom answered and he asked to speak with Marv... Shane said, "Hey, how ya doing?....(they had some small talk)....then I hear Shane say (in a shaky voice), "would it be okay with you if I married your daughter?" Of course Mom & Dad were VERY HAPPY!! We laughed and cried etc... then I had to leave to go pick up our dinner (pizza we had already ordered from a wonderful friend who also came to our wedding a worked his butt off to make it right)....anyway... by time I got home...he had called his Dad, his Mom, and his Brother to let them all know. After we ate... I called my Sister (Maid of Honor), Best Friend (Bridesmaid, flowergirl, & ringbear), and all the Grandparents.... it was quite the night!! That was in Oct 2001....we were tight on money so we did not pick out rings until the end of Nov.... then for Christmas my Boss found out where we were getting the rings and gave us a $1,000 gift cert to pay for it and I was able to have it on my finger the same day that we left to go home to Shane's Family for Christmas.... it was so cool!

We were married Aug 2002...and are living happily ever after!

Thanks for asking this question.... HAPPY MEMOIRES!!

Wow, reading all the proposal stories brought tears to my eyes...That's wonderful that you have such great memories AND successful marriages! The "love at first sight" stories are so sweet, and Cara I thought it was great that you said your DH was sweating because he was sooo nervous. Shell Marr, how sweet that Shane called your parents to ask for your hand, I love it! I hope to have a similar happy story someday...

I love men who are able to shed tears for love! What a guy!!!

Both of my sons are the same way, they can let the tears out and not feel embarassed, I taught them that!

It is quite harder for my husband. But I love him anyway!

At like 4 am I was awoken. Told to get dressed. Get on the T (in Boston...the trolley is called the T).

It was Feb 14th. Hubby and I are religious Jews so he figured I wouldn't suspect he was asking me to marry him on VALENTINE'S DAY LOL

He was right.

I had been waiting for weeks for him to ask. At that point..I was expecting to be waiting a while.

I figured since I'd been naggin him for a surprise...this was finally it.

After going all over town...we ended up at the Wharf by the water. Around 5:45 in the am. He timed it for sunrise! It was FREEZING cold LOL He read me a poem he had written. I STILL didn't think he was going to ask me LOL When he took out the ring...I was SHOCKED! Like...is this REAL?!?!

The poem was BEAUTIFUL! Oh, I also thought he wasn't asking me to marry him because my dad had written my mom a poem to ask her also! Basically it asked me to share my life with him.

I had sent him a website with rings on it. And showed him the type I like. And he had it ordered for me...and he was WAITING for it to be ready.

It was just so special!

We've been together 2.5 years. He means everything to me. Thank G-d I have him

We were poor university students. We had been looking at rings, and decided to have it custom made. I saw two diamonds and three settings and I left and sat in the car. He gave me this whole speech about how he just couldn't afford it in time for Christmas at which point I said "OK no problem" because I knew it was coming anyway...
So 2 days before Christmas he shows up with a box in his hand. I thought he was bluffing and called him on it. He opened the box so I could get a peek and snapped it shut. Then he proposed and I bawled. We woke up both sets of parents to tell them. We've been blissfully married for 7 years now.

Hey Ruchie..

If you're looking for a combo art project/romantic gift, you should print a copy of the poem in a fancy font and decorate around it.. and then frame it! He'll be touched that you remembered and you can put it up somewhere in your house.

Jennifer,

That's a BEAUTIFUL idea! I don't have a printer though...or a disk drive that works Any suggestions as to how I can print the poem in some other way? I guess I could e-mail it to a friend! LOL It could be a LOT of fun to decorate a frame! They have so many elegant crafts nowadays...esp. in the wedding sections!

What a wonderful idea. Can I keep it a secret that it was your idea?

Thanks Jennifer!
