Naming Your Colon

Hello,
I have been speaking to Kandee about starting our band, etc.
for next year's Vegaspalooza. Anyway, have any of you really tried to make friends with your colons? I have noticed that if you give it a name, then you can let it know exactly how you expect it to behave. I have chosen Jeffrey as the name for my colon. My reason is simple. We used to have a neighbor named Jeffrey and every day all we heard was "Jeffrey, what are you doing? Jeffrey stop that! Jeffrey you're gonna hurt yourself." I said, "No!, Jeffrey." Jeffrey, Jeffrey, Jeffrey all day long. I must tell you that my Jeffrey has been very good today especially after I showed him what he's gonna get if he doesn't straighten up. Benefiber! Yes, mam. Okay, now it's your turn. Purrs, Teresa

He's irratating, acts up when you least want or expect him to, plus you just wish he'd go away and stay away. You have to let him now who is boss and insist he play by your rules!

About the next IBS Bash...since you can't come to ours we'll come to you. I can see it now. The next PoopStock 2005 (move over Joplin and Dylan the Witchy Chicks are taking over). Maybe Willy will come help us raise money. Free SFS with every purchase of a Texas Chicken Fried Tofuie Steak. We all sport Mehndi "helpforibs.com" art. You have the land so there's plenty of room for RV's, tents and sleeping bags. A pond you may have to stock so the DH's and DW's---non-IBS'rs can fish. Hey Kandee and Dennis,
Jeffrey says Hi. Poop Stock 2005 ! I love it. LMBO. Texas Chicken Fried Tofuie Steak Puleaze tell they really don't make that. My house it is! I gotta be honest. My drums are heavy and I've only moved them 47 times in the last year. You are such a good planner. We might not need the portapotties because we have so many trees and bushes. Bang the gong and let's get it on in 2005. Teresa P.S. I thought I was gonna have to revive the Schwan's delivery guy in our driveway. He was groaning and carrying on all bent over holding his stomach. I asked if he was okay and exactly where "it" hurt. Sounded just like IBS to me, but he said it couldn't be because he knees hurt too.

Hi Casey and Kandee,
It's a good thing you youngsters caught me because I was just about to reach for the little red delete button. My only intention was to get to know everyone a little bit better and have some fun. I just don't have the energy to look through all the posts that have gone up before I showed up. I'll leave the post up since you two seem to like me for some reason, HOWEVER, I don't think I will set foot in the Living Room area ever again. Hey Becky T,
I collect your recipes all the time and I'm the one that sent you some intel about the Asian Pears. The reason you didn't see my post about naming the colon is probably because it got shoved to the back a couple of hours after I posted it. Hi Kandee,
Okay, you ask for peahs and now you get peahs.
According to the Chinese, pears are considered a cooling fruit and they are excellent for fevers, ulcers or other stomach ailments. For the Chinese, almonds come in two main varieties: there are "northern" (bitter) and "southern" (sweet) almonds. Both are used by the Chinese for food and medicine. … Sweet almonds have a neutral nature, while the bitter are warming, but both lubricate the intestines and temper coughs. Almond tea made with almonds steeped in boiling water, then sweetened with rock sugar, is often drunk as a remedy for coughing.

Recipe from ""A Spoonful of Ginger" by Nina Simonds
6 nearly ripe Asian pears
2 lemons
6 tablespoons honey
4 tablespoons "southern" Chinese almonds

1. Cut a thin slice off the bottom of each pear so that it will stand upright. Peel the pears and rub the surface with a cut lemon half to prevent them from turning brown. Cut the top squarely off each pear, slicing about 2 inches from the top, and with a melon baler or spoon, carefully remove the core and seeds. Do not cut through to the bottom of the pear. Reserve the tops.

2. Arrange the pears on a pie plate or some kind of a heatproof plate. Spoon a tablespoon of the honey into each pear and sprinkle some of the almonds on top. Place the reserved tops on the pears, if necessary securing them with toothpicks. Place the plate in a steamer tray if using.

3. Fill a wok or large pot with enough water to reach the bottom of the steamer tray and bring to a boil.

4. Cover and steam 40 to 45 minutes, or until the fruit is tender when pierced with a knife. Serve the Asian pears warm, at room temperature or cold.

I dang near couldn't find you. In fact, I'm not sure how I got here. Purrs, Teresa

Hi TL -
I have a recipe similar to this in one of my Chinese cook books! The Chinese have great stuff like this - I'm going back to China in two weeks now and I know it will be hellish on my tummy, but I'm sure I'll have lots of freinds offering me this and that tea and herb to try and help - I'll let you guys know what works when I get back!
This colon naming thread made me smile today at work - let's see - name for Mindy's colon - how about chou - this is the Chinese word for stinky - pronouced like Joe with a "ch" sound at the beginning - because it stinks to have Mindy's colon! Hope you're feeling better today - and thanks for the pear post.

Hi mindyj,
Now that is quite a name for your colon. I like it. While you're back in China,I might use it a couple of times on my cats. I read your bio and your life sounds very exciting. Keep in touch if you can and let me know what they use for IBS. I do a lot of acupressure point massage with a tennis ball. You just pick a spot that hurts and put the tennis ball between your owie and the wall and then lean into it and roll it around until you can feel the pain give way. You can also tuck a tennis ball or two under your lower back and rock side to side on it while you lay flat in the bed so that your butt and back muscles will loosen up before you crawl out to greet the world. You're welcome for the pear recipe. Have a safe trip. Teresa

I get spasms that I can't stand up with the pain, which is what it sounds like you mean. I have had my knees go from under me the pain was so bad. I haven't been that bad for well over a month now though, but pain is my main symptom, C or D don't bother me as much (I am A) nor bloating.

Hi Sinead,
Your job sounds really interesting. All the lawyering without having to get involved criminal cases. I assume, of course. Oh, I found out the problem with me, bananas, and avocados. I realize you aren't the one who needed the info, but maybe between the two of us we can remember who it was.
TYRAMINE - Tyramine is a normal substance in the body that helps support blood pressure. Tyramine is also found in certain foods. Examples of foods and beverages which contain tyramine include: beer, ale, robust red wines, Chianti, vermouth, homemade breads, cheese, crackers (with cheese), sour cream, bananas , red plums, figs, raisins, avocados , fava beans, Italian broad beans, green bean pods, eggplant, pickled herring, liver dry sausages, canned meats, salami, yogurt, soup cubes, commercial gravies, chocolate, and soy sauce. Just about everything on that list gives me fits. Another unsolved mystery solved. Teresa

Yep, this is what I wanted...but what are good old American almonds?...you know, the kind you buy in the 10 lb. bag in Costco? Sweet or bitter? Wish I knew, I've become an Almond nut case---(don't comment please). I've never been a big consumer of pears, couldn't see the point of them unless canned with some cottage cheese, but guess I'll change my toon, that's "spoon-toon", and start eating them too. Thanks again. Kandee

Tyramine is also the substance suspected as a migraine trigger in many people. I was reading last night that once the baked goods cool they're okay, they can even be reheated. It's just when they first come out of the oven for some reason.

The effect on blood pressure would explain the migraine connection as it has to do with contraction then dilation of the blood vessels in the brain.

Good info, Teresa, thanks!
