I am needing some insights into my life right now. I moved away from home to stay with friends near a college wanting to make the whole college thing work, but I have had nothing but trouble since I left. Understanding on the part of my friends and their relations as far as my diet is concerned is horrible. I am constantly forced into situations where I either have to eat someting I shouldn't or starve. I generally opt for the eating something I shouldn't because I get sick if I don't eat so it doesn't really matter. College hasn't even started yet and I'm afraid to even see what that will be like. Work is becoming a nightmare. I am constantly munching whether it is from boredom, stress, stomach pains, or a combination of all three(weight gain ). Abdominal pain, lack of sleep, and frustration is not an uncommon companion right now.I recently decided to go back home and take classes online to get things under control, but I'm feeling very frustrated and somewhat like a quitter for taking this option. I want so much to be able to handle my IBS better so I can go to the college I want. I'm even afraid to go out on a date because I'm afraid I'll scare them off if they even find out about a portion of my problems and what it all entails. I know others with IBS are making it out in the college world. I'm just wondering how. Sorry don't mean to be so negative. I've always dreamed of college( I was diagnosed with IBS in Jan.) and now that it's here it's more like a nightmare. Any thoughts on how I can better myself and my situation would be wonderful and greatly appreciated.

You are NOT a quitter. There is absolutely nothing wrong with moving back home and taking on-line courses until you can get a handle on this. I have had IBS since I was a child, so I have had a long time to learn to deal with it. You are just beginning, but believe me, you will find a way. I went to college and had my bad moments, but all and all, I had a wonderful experience.

With IBS, something you will come to understand is that the more control you have, the better you feel. If you can control what you put into your mouth, it relaxes you so much. Friends and their families must be educated, and if those friends don't hear you, then they are not much of a friend in the first place, now are they?

Can you attend college close to home? Or do you have a particular college in mind? I went 2 years at my local community college and then went elsewhere to complete my education. You can do this. It seems you have a handle on your diet and what you can eat, so you must be strong when people try to guilt you into eating otherwise. I finally got to the point where I said NO, I will not eat that and if you don't like it, TOUGH! You have to stand up for yourself, or you will continue to be in pain.

You CAN do this. There are ways and you will find them. Most of us do. Don't let your dreams die out of fear.

Are you IBS D, C, or A?

Thank you so much for the support. It means alot to me that there are others out there willing to help even while they deal with their own problems.
No there isn't a college close to where I live. I wanted to go to a business college that is about three hours from my home. I plan to take a year or two of online classes and then hopefully by that time I will be physically ready to transfer there. I was IBS-A, but since starting on Heather's diet my D is almost completely nonexistent. Heather's diet has done wonders for my IBS. My problems come when I don't follow it (my own fault ) or when I'm put into stressful situations. I am trying to find ways in which I can manage stress better. I was thinking of trying yoga. I don't know if it will work, but it is worth a shot.
Thank you again for the encouragment. I think we all need a little boost (hugs ) every now and again. Don't worry. I haven't given up. Dreams are meant to be reached and I plan on fighting for this one .
