I registered for a duathon yesterday. I read about it in the paper last year and felt it would be just right for me and a great way to train for something and reach goals. It is in September and only for women. It is 2 miles of running, 22 miles of biking and 2 more miles of running. It cost kind of a lot and there are no refunds but it is something I really want to do and a great motivator.

Also on June 7th we are doing a bike ride our friends have done before. It is 35-40 miles in a beautiful north woods setting. I think I will be ready by then because my new road bike is so fast. Otherwise it is hard to get in shape so early. It hasn't been biking weather here and is so windy this time of year too, so it is a crunch for all of us to be ready.

I have a plan for training for the duathon. What do you think?
May:
Start biking 20 miles at a time
run 3 miles faster and try a little further
start backpacking about once a month if possible
June:
bike more than 20m
run 3.5 miles
July:
bike 22m faster
run3.5m faster
August:
run and bike on the same day
September:
run 2m and bike 20m on the same day
be ready and fresh for the 21st!

Do you think I should actually do the 2, 22, and 2 before the event or do you think doing 2 and 20 is enough on one day? I don't think marathon runners run 26m all the time. I also worry about injuries.

I don't have any advice - a nice stroll is about the extent of my exercise - but I think it's great you're doing this. Keep us posted, please.

My goal for May is to bike 20 miles without trouble and run 3.5 miles. I biked 20 on Saturday morning behind hubby and it was easy as pie. Only my new bike's seat seems to have bruised me up front! ouch. I have not run 3.5 miles yet. I have been gardening pretty hard and then I am too tired and sore to run. We are backpacking this weekend so the running is postponed a bit. My calves feel really strong though and my neck is getting stronger each time I use my new road bike.

My training stinks lately because all I do is garden so hard I am too tired or sore to exercise. I am doing a bike a thon next Saturday and I am just trying not to be too sore for it! My back has said 'no more gardening!' and my hamstring is pulled from planting corn seed. I need to rest and heal then bike and run again.

I feel like I am in the best 'shape' of my life (except my back sort of hurts in one spot when I overdo it). I didn't say I am the thinnest I have been by any means! I have been biking over 15 miles to work each way at least once a week, running fast, hardcore gardening and biking everywhere I go, fast. I think I will actually be ready for the duathlon. I won't look good in bike shorts and bra top though!
