I'm doing a behavior modification approach to lose weight. This approach is based on Stay Slim for Good by Zalman Amit and E. Ann Sutherland, copyright 1976. The idea is to control not what I eat but how I eat. There are 7 phases in the program and each phase has a specific behavior or behaviors to be learned. I learn the new behaviors for each phase and must do them successfully for 7 days. (If I fail one day, the 7 days start all over again.) Once I have 7 successful days at one phase, I move to the next phase and the new behaviors for that phase.

Success is measured by points. I get points for my mistakes so the fewer points the better. Based on the points, I get a "grade" of Excellent, Good, Fair, or Start Again.

I have now successfully completed seven days of Phase 1 (here) and am beginning Phase 2. This phase is ""Regulate Your Eating Times". In this Phase, I must eat 3 meals and 2 snacks each day; I must eat them within specific time periods; and I must not eat anything else. I describe Phase 2 in more detail here.

Because my IBS does better if I eat fairly often, I expand this Phase as follows:
- I have something when I first get up, a sort of pre-breakfast. This used to be hot tea plus applesauce and acacia. Now that my IBS is calmer, it's just hot tea.
- I eat all three snacks each day rather than picking only two.

In Phase 2, points are assessed as follows:

If I eat any snacks in addition to the two (three for me) snacks at specified times, I score 10 points for each item eaten or drunk.

If I miss a meal within a scheduled time period, I score 10 points for the missed meal.
If I miss a snack within a scheduled time period, I score 5 points for the missed snack.

In addition, I must still do the recording tasks I learned in Phase 1 and continue to score any errors there. My total score each day is a combination of points from the Phase 1 tasks and points from the Phase 2 tasks.

The scoring ranges for Phase 2 are:
0: Excellent !
1-14: Good
15-29: Fair
30+: Start Again

I'll post my score every day. If time permits, I'll also post what I actually ate for anyone who wants to use the Fitness Board to get ideas for meals and snacks.

I woke up with a cold on Thursday and my whole approach went to heck in a handbasket. Thursday was more points than I can count so Friday and Saturday I went back to just recording until I feel better and can stop sleeping 12+ hours a day. I plan to pick up with Phase 2 tomorrow, Sunday, March 30.

and just recording all that in phase 1 is just really kicking my booty. There're days that I can barely find time to eat besides log it all down!!

I know. It sounds so simple but it's really not. I'm struggling again with Phase 2 but determined to get it right - and soon!

Thanks for the encouragement. When I think about sneaking a piece of chocolate in between meal times, a little voice says, "But then you'll have to 'fess up." It definitely keeps me honest.

Although I've now completed 7 days at Phase 2, I'm going to do one more day at this Phase. Today is a bad day for me to try to take on any new tasks.

I've now completed seven (really eight) consecutive successful Phase 2 days. Since I don't do Phase 3 , it's on to Phase 4 - I'll start a new thread for that phase.

Now ... what is the next phase about?

And ... how do you feel and have you lost weight? It seems like it's a real effort to keep at this ...

Good habits are just that ... good habits. Nice to make some new ones. Kept after it.

Thanks, DoubleJ. The next phase is Phase 3 - I did a separate post on that explaining what is was but that I don't do it.

I'll do a post on Phase 4 when I post yesterday's result - just a little short of time right now since I'm supposed to be eating my mid-morning snack!

I feel better than I have in quite a while. As for losing weight, I don't know. I don't have a scale (pause for gasps of horror from audience) so the only time I get weighed is when I see one of my doctors. Looking at my upcoming schedule, I may get a chance to be weighed next week; otherwise I probably won't find out my weight until July.

I feel like I may have lost a little weight based on clothes but I think that can be an inaccurate indication. Based on what the authors of the plan I'm following say the real weight loss isn't expected to start until I hit Phase 4.

Anyhow once I encounter a scale, I'll report the results.

Take care.
