I'm sure this has come up before but I just thought I'd throw this question in again.

I'm wondering what type of exercise people with IBS-D can typically handle and what is particularly beneficial.

I know yoga, and walking is good. I sometimes do nordic walking as well. I used to do pilates but don't like that anymore for 2 reasons. 1. I don't think it's good for my bowels, and 2. it gives me such a bad muscle pain for 2-3 days after the routine and that makes it more difficult for me to empty my bladder since I need to use the abdominal muscles for that (have problems with bladder retention after paralysis).

I can't do bouncy exercise since my pelvic floor muscles are weak from earlier paralysis.

I'd like to get an exercise bike. Low-medium intensity should be ok I think. What do you think? (I will NOT do spinning as that is too intense and puts too much pressure on the pelvic floor.)

Is it the movement around the abdominal area or the general strain or the intensity in the workout or the possible "bouncing" or what that affects the bowels. I mean, since low intensity exercise is good far all types of IBS but high intensity exercise is basically off limits for IBS-D but good for IBS-C?

I'd love to hear what types of exercise you guys are able to do. I LOOOOOOOOOOONG to do something where I get to sweat a lot - and I love low impact aerobics though I have to be careful with it since I have knee problems too (also from paralysis). But I am scared to do aerobics now since I don't want to upset the IBS...

Good inspiring tips for me are most welcome. I need to mix it up a bit in order to not get bored and end up on the couch all day long...

Gentle exercises are best, but I also found that my IBS would adjust once I was used to an exercise. So if you try something and have D, don't give up, it may just take time to get used to the new movements. I haven't been able to do intense sweaty exercise in a while.

I find a stationary bike is one of the best exercises, or going for a gentle bike ride outside. Ellipticals are great, and walking is always good. Yoga would be better that pilates. Also I find doing gentle ab crunches really helps.

I treat exercise like IF, small amounts, in a gentle way, after a safe SF snack. Also try not to drink too much cold water while exercising. Drinking too much will be difficult on your stomach while it's being worked. It's not necessary as long as you make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day.

Hope that helps,

So, what about intensity? You say you haven't been able to have an intense sweaty workout for a while, but you also say that a stationary bike gives a good type of exercise. But then how much resistance do you use, for how long do you do it and how many RPM? Or maybe more importantly, at what pulse level do you do it?

Walking is fine for me, but with the shape I'm in even a few minutes on an exercise bike on medium intensity gets my pulse up high and it's a real workout for my legs...

I hope I will get good help with my sphincter problem and that I will get it soon. Since it's hard for me to hold back a BM it's always stressful to try new things and I tend to not leave the apartment for a few days since I get scared of accidents. It would really help a lot to be able to trust the sphincter...
