I was going to see a nurtitionist about this, but my doctor wants to wait until my physical (in March) and discuss it then. I'm trying to gain weight, and want to count calories and figure out how much I need to add to my diet to gain weight. I'm currently 92lbs, trying to get to 105. I workout 3 times a week but mostly gentle cardio (20 mins) and weights.

My frustration is with all the conflicting information. I go online to different sites and they all say I need different amounts of calories, ranging from 1800 to 2600 cals/day to gain weight. This is a huge range, so I guess for now I'm just trying to eat as much as I can.

I'm also frustrated because it seems like I'm eating a lot but can't get nearly enough calories. Other people have posted what they eat and # calories, they aren't eating as much as me and their calories are higher. Am I not counting right? Or are the foods I'm eating just so low-cal that I'm eating a lot but it's not adding up? I can't eat to the point where I'm stuffed, cuz my IBS acts up. So basically I'm eating as much as I can without causing symptoms.

Here's a sample 1-day menu:
oatmeal + mixed berries + acacia 200cals
bio-k+ 45cals
egg white 20cals

white bread 200cals
turkey breast 50 cals
veganaise 90 cals
lettuce, olives

3 ginger snaps 140 cals
applesauce 90 cals

1 cup silk milk 140cals

Chicken and Artichokes with pasta 255 cals

Rice + fish (leftovers) 300 cals

Total: 1530

I don't have exactly the same problem, but I'm in a similar situation. I have lost almost 50 pounds since starting this diet early last year. That is a good thing... I was overweight. However, now that I'm at a healthy weight (about 137 lbs and 5'7") I want to be sure I don't continue dropping pounds as much as I have been. I'm considering seeing a dietitian, too, but I'm not sure if that's the best thing to do since they may not be familiar with the needs of an IBS-er.

I've just recently started adding peanut butter to my diet (I use Skippy Natural), and that has helped me a lot when I'm hungry between meals. I just get a big hunk of french bread and spread on a light amount of peanut butter. It's much more filling than just grabbing a hunk of plain bread. I think just some small things like that might help you add calories. If you can't eat any more at meals, you might try choosing higher-calorie snacks with more protein. I'll keep researching, and I'm very interested to hear anything else you learn on the topic!

That's my biggest concern with going to see one. At least I know my diet well and know better than to listen to them if they tell me wrong things, but I still don't want to waste my time, my doctor's time and the RD's time.

I do snack on PB & pita bread, or tofutti cream cheese, or dairy-free nutella. I'm just constantly eating but I can't seem to get enough calories. The only thing I can think of to change/add is to have fish more often. I do well with fish and it does have a bit more fat/cal than plain chicken breast.

I'll keep everyone posted if I do find some kind of meal plan/routine that works.

Thanks,

Do you have Heather's book? I am overweight and doing WeightWatchers. After coming home from my first meeting, I went through Heather's book to see what fit into the WW plan. One thing I noticed that was most of Heather's french toast recipes are way high in calories. If you can tolerate the change in your diet, I think having the Banana-Banana French Toast with Nutmeg Sugar for breakfast would bump up you daily total, as it's twice as much calories as your oatmeal.

Thanks! You know, I have Heather's book and went through it so many times to get more ideas for dinners. I never thought to look for different breakfasts. I will do that thanks. And maybe at the same time I should start making more calorie-rich snacks/deserts. I'll see what I can do, it's just that being a student I don't always have time to do lots of cooking, especially for breakfast.

I'm not a student, but I am a mom who struggles with getting everybody up and ready to go in the mornings. Are you in a dorm? If so, making french toast might be hard. If you have a kitchen, I highly recommend baking large batches on things on the weekends and freezing them. So you spend an entire Saturday baking, but it pays off if for the next couple of weeks, you have a couple different flavors of muffins, a couple banana bread loaves, a couple stacks of pancakes to throw in the microwave. It's the only way I survive during the school year

Hey there! Well, I am in by no way an expert but I thought I might be able to add a couple of thoughts that might help! I am not in the same situation as you, but I can see how frustrating it would be to be trying to gain weight and feel like you are always eating!

First about the calorie range, that does seem like a really big range. I always thought a range was given because your body needs somewhere in between those and there is a "cushion" on either side. I also think it lets you take into account for yourself how much you need.. like if you are walking around all day, or working at a desk your daily needed calories will be different.
As for the nutritionist, I know you mentioned that you were worried about seeing someone who knows enough about IBS to be able to give you advice you can actually take! I hear ya! I really lucked out and got free nutritional counselling through work last year. It was a woman who was based out in Calgary, her name is Nancy Lundhild. She is great, and has compiled loads of information about IBS and also has done things like sports nutrition and stuff like that so she is really, really knowledgable about weight issues and IBS issues. Thing is, I don't know if she would be like a private service that you wouldn't be able to get covered and the sessions (which are by phone and mail/eMail) might come out of your own pocket. I have a telephone session with her tomorrow, I'd be happy to ask her for you.

I'm also frustrated because it seems like I'm eating a lot but can't get nearly enough calories. Other people have posted what they eat and # calories, they aren't eating as much as me and their calories are higher. Am I not counting right? I looked at your day and it looks similar to a lot of my days, but you're right the calories look lower than if I were to count them. I'll have a look through and let you know what some of mine looked like to see if that helps?

Here's a sample 1-day menu:
oatmeal + mixed berries + acacia 200cals How much oatmeal and berries are you having? For me, for example, I would have 1/3 cup of oatmeal with berries and Soy Milk and it would be 250 calories
bio-k+ 45cals
egg white 20cals

white bread 200cals
turkey breast 50 cals
veganaise 90 cals
lettuce, olives

3 ginger snaps 140 cals
applesauce 90 cals

1 cup silk milk 140cals

Chicken and Artichokes with pasta 255 cals I might be wrong, but this looks pretty low to me. Any time I have a meal with pasta with any kind of protein it is *at least* 300 cals, usually closer to 350. Maybe I just eat more than you, though!

Rice + fish (leftovers) 300 cals

Total: 1530 The rest of it looks pretty similar to things I've logged, so it looks like either you're right or we're both wrong! Could you try to add in more protein with stuff like hummus or soup with beans or something? What about baked sweet potatoes or something that usually pack quite a few cals but aren't unhealthy?

Well, I dunno if any of that has been at all helpful but I wish you the best of luck! I will just ask my nutritionist tomorrow how a private client would get in touch and how coverage works and stuff and I'll post the info tomorrow or the next day when I get a free minute.
Cheers!

Steph

Hi there (again),

So I spoke to my nutritionist yesterday and at the end of my appoinment, I mentioned the predicament you are in and she said she'd be glad to send you some information and possibly set up some nutritional counselling if you are interested. She said that if you have EAP coverage through work, you could get several sessions covered OR if that isn't an option, she said she'd be willing to do a "freebie" consultation with you and send you the information she has on IBS, healthy weight gain, and some sports nutrition (as I mentioned you regularly exercise). Anyway, I don't want to post her eMail address or phone number on a public board, so if you want to eMail me at: Valerie_Skye@hotmail.com or let me know your eMail, I can pass the info along.
I hope this helps - she is really great.

Cheers,

Steph

I was just "catching up" & had an idea that might be helpful--have you checked out Canada's Food Guide at all?
I know, it sounds very simple, but it looks like you're low in a lot of your food groups. The fats/oils area could be challenging, but perhaps substitute treats in that category.
You could definitely use a few more milk alternative selections and probably fruits/veggies and more grains.

Note: I'm trying to be encouraging and helpful, not critical. I know you're frustration because I'm underweight too. I couldn't believe that technically I wasn't getting enough protein selections until I went to the current site to see what a serving size of meat alternatives was!

Kate, IBS-D.
