Hello,

I was diagnosed with IBS years ago and in 2001 with IC. About a little over a month ago now I felt like my IC had flared up and along with that my bowels changed somewhat. I rode it out for a while and then decided to go the my gastro dr. to have it checked out. He had me have some bloodwork done, along with some stool samples (which I have not found out results yet) and also prescribed flagyl to take. He also ordered me to have an MRI of the liver. I also have a FNH of the liver of which is benign and he wants to check on it. He told me that if all checks out "normal", then he wants to do a colonoscopy. My last one was in 2001. I just dread going through all these tests. It really brings me down.
Has anyone else experienced lots of back discomfort when the IBS is flared up and cramping? I went to my chiro the other day and got some relief but today is feeling like a bad day. I'm tired of feeling like this.

I do drink the peppermint tummy tea and am awaiting the arrival of a new canister of tea bags of same. I guess my diet is not the best and probably aggravates my intestines.

Please any advice one should have or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

God Bless

hi there,
dont let all this testing get you down, before i was officially diagnosed with IBS i had every test under the sun, colonoscopies, endoscopies, ultrasounds, mris. Its pretty frustrating especially because to most doctors, ibs is a diagnosis by elimination. IE, they cant find anything else wrong with you...so voila...IBS. The good thing is, its nice to know there is nothing sinister lurking around in your liver and guts. I had a perfect bill of health until my IBS was brougth on by a major infection and too much antibiotics. I got the flu...and the diarrhea, cramps bloating and nausea never went away.
On the back pain issue. I use acupunture to releive the pain. It feels like im holding a lot of pressure in my lower back and i find the needles lets it out.
Anyway, i hope this helps. hang in there. Being brave is a virtue.

I agree: Testing sucks, but yes, it is a diagnosis of elimination. I have found through different literature that IBS has a lot to do with diet and lack there of. Books to check out would be: The Yeast Connection, Eating for IBS, IBS: What Your Doctor Won't Tell You, The Candida Cookbook to name a few. Not all of these will pertain to you, but reading them may give you insight as to what food intolerances you do have as to concentrate on a diet lacking your food intolerances. As soon as you do this, I am sure you will start to feel better.

Exercise also helps. For mild discomfort, I drink metamucil & water. The heating pad is GREAT to have at night, while relaxing, and at work (desk job). But, since I have been eating properly, I don't have to drink metamucil or use the heating pad (unless I voluntarily eat one of my forbidden foods. Now, not everyone is the same, but I personally cannot consume anything containing dairy, sugar, gluten, wheat, or yeast. It limits my meals to fresh fruits and vegeables, soy products, grains, fish, low fat meats, etc. I know it sounds boring, but it's very healthy and much of it tastes the same if not better than the "real" stuff that we are so used to eating. But, the truth of the matter is that is what has been making us sick all of these years. And, if you don't want to feel sick, it's best to give up those beloved foods.

To answer one of your other questions: my back hurts when my IBS flares BECAUSE of the foods I have been eating has caused constipation. Plus, I have endometriosis. It's all connected. But, because I take meds for that, and concentrate on the healthy lifestyle, I am doing much better. I hope that you find this information beneficial, and I wish you the best at overcoming IBS!
