I just got back from the doctor, and my panic is being treated but I was told that my BMI is borderline (on the overweight side @27). I asked about what I should do about my diet with wanting to lose weight and manage IBS, but I was told to just eat smaller portions. I'd really appreciate some tips on safe and healthy or light foods. Thanks!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear that your doctor's appointment didn't give you all the answers you were looking for - I don't think they ever do! Doctors seem to get a bit tunnel-visioned sometimes and don't like to answer questions on a variety of topics sometimes. (Which doesn't bode well for my GI appointment tomorrow, hehe).

Eating smaller portions is a good way to start - for both IBS and weight control. Try to eat every 2-3 hours to keep your tummy full and it also helps so you don't go too long without eating and then eating too much in one sitting.

I would say try to incorporate lean proteins into meals and just try to cut back on "empty calories" - so things with a lot of sugar in them that don't do anything good for your body.
I am still trying to figure out how to eat safe and healthy for my IBS/reflux and lose weight so I don't have a whole lot of tips but hopefully someone else will chime in.
I am off to make some soup but if I think of anything, I will add more later!

Cheers!

Steph

If you really follow Heather's diet, you will most likely lose weight without even trying. At least, that has been my experience. Since changing my diet in February, I have now lost just over 30 pounds and gone down 2 pants sizes. 15 more pounds, and I'll be to my ideal weight!

If you cut out the unhealthy stuff (high-fat foods, foods with high fructose, red meats, etc.) and don't eat huge portions, as Heather suggests, you will most likely lose weight, too. I would focus on getting the IBS under control, and your body will love you for it!

As far as meal suggestions go, here are a few of my favorites...

First of all, I cook sauteed veggies a lot. Here's what I do - In skillet, saute a little olive oil, minced garlic, and minced onion (not too much). Add chopped carrots and stir around. Let them cook for just a couple of minutes, but don't let the garlic burn. Add chopped zucchini &/or yellow squash and chopped broccoli or other veggies of choice. Keep in mind that the carrots & zucchini/squash are SF, so keep those in there if you like them! Add a little salt and pour in a little water (just enough to get the carrots cooking, but not enough to drown all the veggies! Let simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally, until the carrots are tender.

Grilled chicken (cooked in a little olive oil, garlic, & minced onion) with rice and veggies (either green beans or sauteed veggies)

Tilapia (cooked in skillet with a little olive oil, Old Bay seasoning, & cumin) with Jasmine rice and sauteed veggies - got this meal idea from the recipe board here.

Shrimp stir-fry - saute veggies using sesame oil instead of olive oil and soy sauce instead of salt. Saute shrimp in soy sauce & a tiny bit of sesame oil. Serve over Jasmine rice.

Tyson teriyaki chicken breasts (sold in a big frozen bag at Sam's) with white rice and green beans or veggies

Tofu spaghetti - Amy's Family Marinara sauce (we didn't like the low-sodium variety). I add a little cubed tofu (maybe 1/3 block) to the sauce and cook for 20 minutes. Serve with your favorite type of non-egg noodle pasta. We just ate this tonight, actually... DELICIOUS!!!

For lunch, I often eat a GardenBurger flame grilled soy burger on a plain bun with a tiny bit of shredded cheese (fat-free works for me as long as I only eat a tiny bit, but you may need to get soy cheese). I HATE HATE HATE Boca burgers, but these are really good! I eat them with a few baked tostitos or BBQ soy crisps. Yum!

My other favorite lunch is Amy's tofu vegetable lasagna served with french bread.

Hope something here in my ramblings helps you!
