i'm back! thanksgiving was great - i ate tons, but in the long run, it really didn't matter. and i don't have a month of holiday eating ahead. that weekend was it. and it was great. but back to reality...

small piece white spelt bread w/ jam

kashi oatmeal w/ ff soy milk
1 werther's

small fake bologna sandwich on white spelt w/ reduced fat mayo
2 werther's

veggie sandwich (spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers) on french roll w/ lite mayo
banana spirutein in ff soy milk (oh my god so delicious!)

spinach linguini w/ veggie meatballs in tomato sauce (and i wonder why i have this burning now at the back of my throat...)

1 ff devil's food mint cookie
fruity pebbles w/ ff soy milk
(probably too many) wheat thins

a bit too hungry when i got home... wish i'd taken more time to think about what would be a good choice. i had a reading after work today, so i just got home at 11. i love my job, but 13 hour days are no fun.

a little c and gassy... probably the not-too-safe weekend catching up with me. hopefully it'll clear up soon...

i saw quinoa flakes (and quinoa flour/quinoa) at the hfs. how do quinoa flakes taste? how do you prep. them. i was tempted to buy/try them (they look so gentle and are a nutritional powerhouse). please advise. do eat them sweet/neutral/or savory?

Mini Bagel
Chamomile Tea

Egg-white mushroom omelette
Bite of Banana
Anise Tea

Mini Bagel
Beets
Fennel Tea

2 bowls cream of wheat (gas!!)
Beets
Mushrooms
Chamomile Tea

Egg white Potato omelette
Bite of Banana
Chamomile Tea

Mashed potatoes
Cream of Wheat
Fennel Tea

I had a major attack after eating the last bowl of cream of wheat at 8:00pm. I think I was too full, not sure. I think I need to get egg substitutes instead of using real egg whites. They gave me horrible stomach cramps late in the evening and back pain which I think was just major gas. Made me nauseated!!

Oh Man..this morning I feel hung over. Yesterday I did not eat enough during the day. I was out with a very good friend and did not plan well. Evening came around and I had a LONG phone conversation with my mother about my relationship troubles and the second I got off the phone I had a mindful snack that became a truly massive binge/purge session. I haven't done that since the summer. It felt aweful and all the sugar gave me a massive headache this morning. Needless to say I don't want to list what I ate, but I feel a need to share what happened.
I feel so guilty about eating today, but being so hypoglycemic I have to. Any support would be sooo very much appreciated!

hey arafel. that sounds like a rough day. lots of hugs to you.

as far as eating today goes, the best way to get your body back on track is to make today a good, healthful eating day. depriving yourself to compensate for last night will only perpetuate an unhealthy cycle. aside from the hypoglycemia (which in and of itself is, of course, a reason you need to eat and eat healthily), what i'm learning is that we need to re-learn healthy eating patterns - the best way is to, after a tricky episode, get right back on track, rather than overcompensating in either direction.

sending lots of hugs and love to you. it's so hard sometimes. we're here for you.

how are those sitting with you?

they totally fit in with the treating ourselves with childhood treats thing, at least for me - i have a vivid memory of being on a plane with my mom and my sister (i think i was about eight) and having teddy grahams as a snack. i buy them now every once in a while - aside from tasting so good, their texture is really satisfying.

okay, jaime's teddy graham's commercial is done.

they sit just fine.

yes--i totally agree...the inner little girl wanted them and they looked safe. do you ever just let your hands direct you when shopping? note: she also pointed to some organic asparagus which went in the cart & eggplant, too! She said, "no celery!!!" I obliged. She said, "organic soup!" I obliged. She pointed to the zucchini and it's in the fridge. Do you ever do that? She said, Kate, I miss my Corn Pops...they are here for those days/daze!

Maybe I am warped or crazy--but I think you of all people get it. It's part of body/mind healing re: food issues.

There are many levels of our own consciousness at play when making choices. When we include the wisdom/spirit of the inner lost little girl (denied? in my case, yes, whipped for every discovered stolen cookie), we heal. Also, my mother is on a warped diet and in huge self-denial. So, I think it's making me more rebellious.

Nevertheless, it's that permission factor. The kitchen nazie has been executed.

I agree though--they taste good & there's something cool about the texture.

Kate.

hugs, dear arafel.

that was yesterday. truly, i know you feel gross, but the best route is to focus on today and today's choices.

i know you probably don't feel like eating, but eating at regular times is the best approach. be kind. i suspect from what you said, the trigger was psychological.

also, dieting tends to make people vulnerable to binge/purge
activity as a state of deprivation is involved and self-judgement.

drink lots of water, too. you'll feel more clear.

hugs, again,
kate.

thank you both sooo much for your support! It really helped my day!! I hope I'm not getting too personal, but I got my period this evening, a week early. It's been going crazy and I tend to have horrible PMS anyhow. I am on the pill and have been for a couple years but my body just ignores it no matter the level of estrogen. So I think the stress of the end of the semester/relationship troubles/hormones all made a big big mess of me.
Thanks again!!!

for flakes, just nuke em w/ water, just like instant oatmeal. It's pretty bland so add cinnimon and yummers.
Quinoa flour is good when mixed w/ others. Quinoa seeds make great rice substitutes. Be creative.

So, what's the quinoa flake/water ratio. I've had quinoa as a
rice sub. (awesome!!!) previously--kind of prepared like couscous. Do you recommend sweetening/spicing the quinoa flakes? Oatmeal makes me vomit, by the way--anything with oats does. They don't taste like oatmeal, do they? Also, would they be okay cold? Warm/hot food triggers my gag reflex.

Thanks.
Kate.

If you have trouble with oatmeal you might want to try cooking them in soups/thin veggie mixes and letting the soups cool or cooking the flakes, letting them cool and mixing them into something else. They make soups and veggies more substantial and give a protein kick. They are so much thinner and less gloppy than oatmeal. You just need a cup of water/liquid for every third cup flakes, but you can make it as thin as you want. And they go well with any flavor. They are also good for crisp toppings and adding some crunch to a baked apple.

Can I ask if/why you eat Gluten free? Did you have gluten antibodies? Or is this something you chose to do for yourself just because it makes you feel better?

Do you eat any type of gluten, or just now wheat. Like, would you eat spelt bread?
