hi
i am new to this board, and just started the IBS diet. i did not believe that i had IBS because pain is the least troubling symptom i have, and because i was told to "eat more fiber" and i did that, and it did not help (it made things much worse, but then no one said anything about the different kinds of fiber!! grr!)

anyway, due to being ill, being on medication that has permanently altered my metabolism, and inactivity, i have gained a lot of weight.

i have IBS-A. My main problem for the past year or so has been C.
however i noticed that now that i am on this new diet, it does not take much for me to go from C to D- or even not D but an urgency that means i *must* be in the immediate vicinity of a bathroom or a very emabarrassing accident will occur.

UM!! so, i can not exercise indoors, i am on the 3rd floor with the landlord below me on the 2nd floor, and i can't afford any exercise equipment anyway (i am disabled, on a very low fixed income)

i plan to go walking, but i do not know what to do about this um, "urgent" or rather "urgency" problem.

any one have any suggestions?
about the only exercise i have been getting is walking to the store and back, that takes about 40 mins, i do not drive, so i am carrying a lot of heavy things too.
usually about an hour or so after that walk (nearly daily)
i need the bathroom available *right away*.

i want to start walking 30 mins a day and work my way up- but i need to do this, um, safely.

sorry for the graphic details, don't know how else to describe the situation

Hi, welcome. I am a D and even when all is well I still get those "right now" moments once in a while. You don't mention if you are taking any supplements for the IBS. One thing I do that seems to have helped reduce any problems when I go walking is taking immodium everyday. I skip taking it sometimes on weekends but not if I'm planning any trips or walking. This is just one thing I do that has relieved me of the IBS/D. I also use Acacia and Levbid daily, plus Heather's diet. Even if you can't do other exercises at least your walking and thats great. Have a great day!

Leslie Sansone has great exercise videos. They're walking based and have only 4 basic steps. I've found them to be just great. It's a good workout, and you only need a small amount of space to do them. Just enough to take a couple steps forward, back and to the sides and you're set! It would be a start.

I think every IBS-D or A has had that problem at one point! I know Jenny runs but has to do the first few miles in a section of the park with toilets! I've had to go in the woods before when out walking.

Okay, the urgency should ease as you stick to the diet...a SFS will also help. Acacia seems to be very good for IBS-A, probably b/c it's gentle but effective (possibly b/c it's so gentle you can take loads of it! ).

In the meantime, if you are going through a D stage, then Immodium taken as a preventative (works best when taken daily) will slow your GI system down. That's how Immodium works which is why it's great for urgency as well as full-on D.

Finding a walking route or a park with plenty of accessible toilets is a good idea! Or try walking faster, even power-walking...that would get you to and from the shops quicker as well as burning more calories.

And you can get great exercise CDs/videos for at home. As you're above your landlord (no jumping I guess?) I'd suggest yoga. Om: Yoga in a Box Beginner level has been great for me.

HTH!
