Well my husband and I went to church today but in the middle of service I had to use the bathroom. I felt very sick afterwards. A Dr diagnosed me with IBS a little over month ago but we did not like him. I came home and rested some and then went to the health food store. The last 3 days have been hard and I have not been able to eat much. I tried to eat a veggie burger tonight but all I could eat is 3 bites. I have gone to another Dr for a 2nd oppinion and have an appt to get the results of the blood work. I am trying to follow Heather's diet and have been doing better. I was on parasite pills for a while but I am going to Acupuncture Dr this week that also does colonics. I am hoping that it helps. I am losing too much weight [color:purple] [/color] Any suggestions on things I can do would be great. I really love to walk and I do that often.

Hello, and welcome! I recommend posting in the IBS Diet board you'll get more responses there. This one is mainly used for fitness.

Please know that colonics are very BAD for IBSers--our GI tracts are already sensitive, this will only traumatize them further. Please do a board search and you'll see what others have to had to say about their experiences with colonics. You'll see that Heather also warns against the procedure. Click here for more about colonics.

Glad to hear that Heather's diet is working. Keep on following her guidelines and you'll continue to notice improvement. Are you IBS-D? When do you expect to receive the results of your second dr's opinion?

Okay, I need to share a Venus moment. I just had a shower. I always emerge feeling like Venus or a Boticelli Beauty from the steam.

I hardly lose any hair. I just peaked at my final hair filling in 'spot.' Guess what! NO GAP. It's so weird, rather like watching an infant grow hair. Anyways, the last little patch is totally covered with hair.

Yes, I know...I'm being a rebel from the program--it works for me right now.

Anyways, I'm high because everyday I'm hairier and my last patch is filled in. A moment of vanity, but I'm worth it.
More motivation to keep with the program and listen to body.

Have a good one,
Kate, IBS-D.

...do you stay stable even though you don't follow Heather's diet, Wind?

I am also losing hair and don't know what type of diet would help it like it has helped you. Is your diet radically different from Heathers? Do you eat SF before IF, etc? And if not, don't you get sick?

Cyndy:

I saw a specialist, last week, and have been diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder: aloepecia areata. I am in remission. My immune system is no longer attacking my hair follicles and therefore regrowth is occurring.

I have a type of anemia which causes this effect related to B12/folate absorption, pernicious anemia which the expert believes 'stresses out' my immune system and causes my aloepecia. I get B12 shots and eat LOTS of folate and recently started eating meat/fish/egg whites/fowl...My body wanted animal protein and I listened. My hair grows stronger, thicker, faster with a high protein diet without sugars, etc., and lots of greens/veg.

Re: do I feel ill not following Heather's diet to the letter?

NO. I take a SF supplement and I eat tons of SF veggies and when in the mood, SF fruits. I follow a lot of Heather's wisdom, avoiding triggers most of the time, especially fat, dairy. This keeps me stable. I also take high potency enzymes which REALLY help keep me stable.

I absolutely take SF prior to consuming anything!!! I cannot tell you enough how much SFS has helped with my D!

I may not eat the grain based SF that you do--however I eat tons of other sources of SF. If you check the sources of SF, you will note that there are TONS of SF fruits and veggies. Perhaps you should reacquaint yourself with them.

I'm elated though...watching hair grow in so quickly...it's like witnessing 'your child,' an infant girl grow hair so quickly. It's not grey either!!! (a nice coppery-tinted brown) (I'm 31)

No, in general though, my diet usually isn't all that radically different from Heather's.

Maybe see an endocrinologist? A dermatologist? I waited over a year and a half for my testing/appointments--seriously.

Kate, IBS-D.

I love to hear these stories of people using the diet guidelines to follow a safe, but not "standard" diet!

Good for you Kate...and I'm glad your hair's doing so well too. Congrats on not coming back grey!

IBS-A for 20 years with terrible bloating and gas. On the diet since April 2004. Remember this from Heather's information pages:
"You absolutely must eat insoluble fiber foods, and as much as safely possible, but within the IBS dietary guidelines. Treat insoluble fiber foods with suitable caution, and you'll be able to enjoy a wide variety of them, in very healthy quantities, without problem." Please eat IF foods!

congrats for taking a break, jaime! i took a break on canadian thanksgiving, too!

re: zucchini--one of my favourite veggies, or shall i say fruits? very very very safe for me and lots of sf!

it's so fast, so easy and well...sometimes all i want is a big plate of broiled or grilled zucchini with herbs, etc.
zucchini hash is cool. scalloped zucchini. zucchini sticks/fingers (similar to french fries) give it any spice or twist you desire! confession: mostly i like it pretty plain, i.e. sea salt/herbs.

just season, cut in funky shapes, and put on a cookie sheet and broil until done/crispy. don't laugh, but sometimes i think it tastes like veggie bacon! I like it really baby/paper thin and usually run it through my food processor for a second or use a mandolin slicer or give it a french fry cut. You could even put a little soy cheese or soy parmesan on it if desired or give it a 'gratin' effect with some crumbs and perhaps a wee bit of an egg white wash.

Great side dish or, uh, entree. Fabulous snack! Not bad with either 'shrooms or spinach and even beets! Even broccoli!

kate, ibs-d.

Thanks Linz, for the vote of encouragement.

I think that people don't realize how flexible eating for IBS can be! Heather's guidelines are so easy to adapt!

Lol! It's a relief not be be grey! That would be depressing!

Kate, IBS-D.

I know how you feel. After my son was born (my daughter too), I lost half my head I swear. Has something to do with the blood vessels contracting and having less blood flow or something or other... I remember seeing the little "peach fuzz" coming in on my hairline on my forehead.

Lol! Indeed I feel like Rapunzel with this hair thing. I'm doing some free weights and walking more. (I need some arm strength, as they are literally all bones and well...I want to feel confident driving a vehicle, again.) Yup, I'm a wimp, a woos...but everyday, in everyway stronger and stronger and stronger.

It's creepy though. Since playing with the weights, my lower arms are more developed than the upper. I guess they're my chopping muscles, or the muscles I'd use for fine motor vehicle manoevering. Walking a big dog would be challenging--I don't have the strength/power/control (yet). It would walk me.

I don't feel so weak anymore and I'm glowing. PROTEIN POWER indeed. It really has changed me, for the better, I think.

I'm having a 'cow' or rather rediscovered the joy of soy milk, or 'lactic acid.' Really does wonders for my osteopenia. I guess, I'm trying to reverse being an old bag at 31. I found a brand without sugar and carrageenan that works. Whipped up some homemade soy yogurt, too! It's wicked.

You, Laurel, especially, continue to inspire me to be stronger and stand taller and walk longer and I thank you for that.

It's so weird going through this warped regrowth, regeneration spurt. A rose blooming in winter and I'm blushing.

Truly,
Kate.
