Hmmm...well I thought I did really badly today, but if I hadn't had a second lunch I'd have been under. I'm only looking to not gain atm btw.

B: Oatmeal with berries & soy milk.
L: Noodles with low-fat mayo & peas x2 .
S: 2 Lemon & Raisin pancakes. Rooibos with soy milk. Rice cake with yeast pate. Soy milk.
D: Low-fat fries, vege sausages & baked beans.

My new favourite sandwich... 1 vienna sub bun toasted, 2 tbsp spicy hummus, 1/2 cup zucchini grilled with balsamic vinegar, 2 thin slices soy "meat"

1 slice brown sugar banana bread (made with part soy protein powder)

250ml water

2 veggie dogs on buns w/mustard
1 large pear, peeled/nuked

Notes:
Really should have eaten more before the workout... a bit of applesauce is not much to do a proper workout on. I was going to have a protein shake but I really couldn't down it that early in the morning. I have about an hour before my workout so I don't want to have anything too heavy... hmm, any suggestions? Anyway, all in all it was a pretty good day. Good workout, lots of water (2.5L) and no calorie counting

Hi Laurel! menu looks yummy! for an idea before your workout thats light on the stomach- how about soy yogurt mixed with applesauce, pumpkin, sliced banana w. honey or mango puree? I find egg whites light on the stomach and helps sustain your tummy longer and energy if you need it!

Food intake du jour:

--1 c. egg whites
--4 oz. cod, poached (soft is easier on my teeth and tummy--I have really bad teeth/tmj)

--salad: boston lettuce/baby spinach/english cucumber/red onion
--salad: red leaf lettuce/yellow bean puree/yellow seedless tomatoe

--mushrooms/red onion/parsley (with cod)
--green sauce du jour: broccoli/basil/garlic (everyone at my place went mad about this one! i swirled it in my breakfast egg white power omelette; put a few scoops on my lunch salad; finished the day up a tree using it to 'hide', or rather adorn my cod. pureed it's no problem for me!)

Notes/Reflections:

a.) omigod! i feel amazing! i went for a 40 min. walk for the first time in months! my body wants to stretch, to walk again.
b.) i figure, i live like a cavewoman, so i may as well eat like one--yes, i'm definitely from "the farside" (my favourite toilet reading is comics)
c.) i don't understand what i'm going through! it's so confusing! however, i'm still listening/responding to this vehicle/animal i reside in for the duration of my residence on earth.
d.) fish is so easy/tummy friendly/and fast!

verdict: just continue listening and PROTEIN POWER!!! I feel good at around 100g/day and that's the average of what i'm getting from assorted sources. my diet is over 50% protein.

Woke up feeling sick (went for my Tegretol blood drawing), so little technical exercise, but much being out and about.

Food:

1/2 cup oatmeal with a bit of honey

2 luna bars and one cliff

1 cup jasmine rice with a bit of smoked salmon (like 2 bites worth!) and some terriyaki sauce (should have bought the rice vinegar...next time!)

3 dates total for the day (to take meds with)

dinner--half cup rice with some broccoli soup (that's the plan)

no idea how many cals? All I know is I am having BM's again!

I decided to do some yoga, about 20-30 mins..so I did an activity for the day!

Sleep. Sleep. ZZZZZ for this gal today...hope this virus leaves me soon!!!!

1280! and i'm *so* full right now! walked to work today, and then gym - 40min elliptical, more walking, stretching, crunches, a total party.

today, was a little high in fat (22%), but i'm actually concerned about my protein. i've been hovering around 17%, which isn't enough. (right?) more tofu, oatmeal, fake cold cuts... soy yogurt & milk are so high fat, comparatively... i should start buying eggs again... i wish i liked beans. any thoughts?

More protein ideas:

Are you a vegan/vegeterian? If you are (sorry, don't recall) ignore this idea: salmon! Loads of protein and healthy...

I can't do beans either for now. I was doing a veggie diet but I am eating egg whites as tolerated (not great for my interstitial cystitis all the time) and I'm eating salmon again. I WAS eating dairy but it just makes me sick (mucous).

Hmm...I'm thinking more and more you ARE vegan! It sounds like you can eat soy...add more perhaps? Can you do some nuts/seeds? If yes, try tehini, pumkin seeds, and nuts in general. I think seaweed and spirulina have tons of protein? Someone back me up here?

You are BEAUTIFUL Jaime inside and out...and I am SO PROUD OF YOU for eating so well and treating your bod with love and care...you DESERVE it *hugs*

thanks, ruchie! i am a vegetarian, but not vegan... which basically means i'll eat eggs, now that dairy's off-limits. i'm going to investigate the protein powder thing. and start buying eggs & more fake meat again.

See, I'm kind of weird. Anything *mushy* - any mushy foods - totally repulse me. So oatmeal was kind of struggle for me... until I started making it like this. My bf thinks I make it too dry but then, I think he makes it too mushy, lol. (You could totally make this "mushier" though by putting in more applesauce than oatmeal or whatever your preference is.)

Anyway, I just mix up the applesauce and oats and microwave it for 2 minutes. I've also done it on a camp stove in a pot, continually stirring, while camping this summer though! And that worked just fine You could definitely do it with quick oats too, I just prefer the whole rolled oats because it's more textured...

Hey, soy yogurt - I never thought of that. Good idea! I just might try that... I would probably need more SF than that though in the morning. Maybe soy yogurt spread on a slice of toast? (Is that gross?) I tried egg whites but I felt just so full and heavy afterwards that working out seemed impossible And I'm kind of repulsed my egg whites and such lately, but that's just me

The problem is that my stomach is so touchy in the morning IBS-wise that I'd really rather just NOT eat in such a cramped time period (1 hour between waking up and workout, the only thing that really works with my schedule), but then if I don't my workout really suffers and I feel really weak and STARVING afterwards. Actually, today I had oatmeal as soon as I got up and that worked out pretty well.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Jaime, I wouldn't worry too much about your protein... 17% is just fine The average (healthy) diet gets around 12-15%. Now, if you're exercising intensely and/or cutting your calories (which you are right?) then you should get more because when your caloric supply is "inadequate" then your body relies more on protein for fuel. But the recommended range for athletes is still only around 20%.

Soooo... long story short I wouldn't really be *worried* about your protein intake in % of calories - 17% is a pretty good number, aim for around 20% since you're cutting calories.

However, I would note that I really think you should be eating MORE in general. 1280 is a REALLY low amount. I know most days you get a bit more than that but I still don't think that's enough.... Sorry if I'm overstepping here and giving you unsolicited advice or anything, but you can only cut calories so much to lose weight before your body goes into "starvation mode" and yoru efforts start to become counter productive. You'll probably see a lot more success (and be a lot happier) eating a bit more, i.e. around 1800ish calories a day (gradually work up, obviously).

And just for the sake of illustration, some math...
Generally, you want 0.8g of protein / lb of bodyweight. I'm not sure how much you weigh but right now you're taking in (taking today as an example) about 55g of protein (17% of 1280)... most days you're around 1600 though right? So a more accurate number would probably be 65-70g. If you weigh 130lbs, you should be getting 104g of protein - BUT that should still be about 20% of your calories. Which would be 2000 calories.

OK, hope that was helpful, and again, sorry for the unsolicited advice

somewhere along the line i thought i learned that calorie intake needs to be above 1200 or so to make sure you don't go into starvation mode. i've been aiming to keep it between 1200 and 1600... obviously ending on the higher end of that most days. i think i have a rather low metabolism, just based on how previous diet changes have affected me. what i mean by that is i think that my body's resting/base calorie use is on the low end of the scale. (i also tend to need a lot of sleep and be cold often - but maybe those are old wives tale measurements of calorie use. and my family tends to the heavy side, too. my mother has a terrible time trying to lose weight.) i don't know if any of those things mean anything. but i think, before the ibs diet, i was probably taking in 1800-2300 calories a day.

i'm glad my protein situation isn't as bad as i'd thought. thanks. more thoughts on the metabolism/calorie intake thing would be great.

Oh good, I'm glad I didn't offend. 1200 is kind of like the "danger point" put out by doctors - if you go lower than that in cutting calories, you're probably damaging your body. But really, that's kind of like the ultimate lowest. I think that if you try to stick in the 1600-1800 range you'll probably be best off. But obviously, you know your body best.

Metabolism and stuff was discussed a lot when this board first started... look for posts by Elizabeth (e_mcmaster) and Alicia (HansSolo) especially. Elizabeth's story is pretty interesting - when she was battling with an eating disorder she was eating a ridiculously low # of calories, i.e. around 800 or so a day I think. But then after a while, she actually starting GAINING weight - the less she ate, the more she gained. Basically, the body goes into starvation mode. It knows it's not getting enough food so it hangs on to everything it can by slowing down the metabolism. The less you eat, the slower it goes in response.

So yes, it's very possible that you have a slow metabolism. But the biggest myth is that you have no control over your metabolism - you do! Yes, there are some aspects to it that you can't control - genetics, hormones etc. (the fact that people in your family have trouble losing weight *may* be a sign of that, but it may not be, however the other things you mentioned, i.e. sleep and being cold all the time, probably aren't related to it. I'm cold all the time too - it's probably more likely circulation-related). Aaaaanyway, back to metabolism. It's mainly determined by your lifestyle - so if you don't do anything to speed it up, it's not going to speed up. And to speed it up, you have to give it MORE to do. So you have to eat more, be more active, build more muscle (increased muscle mass spikes your metabolism like nothing else), drink more water etc. etc. etc. Now, if you just start eating lots more right now you'd probably gain a little bit of weight. But in the long run, you'd increase your body's ability to burn fat. Especially if you put on more muscle.

OK, I'm rambling a little here... I hope this had made sense. Really do check out some of the older posts though. Try searching "metabolism" on this board only maybe. HTH
