I don't want to have to stop jogging. I felt so excited to start doing this again! Do you wear knee braces Ginger?

Looks like I'm gonna have to dig out the credit card and buy some shoes, ankle weights, and knee braces. Oh, I wish I wasn't so broke!

I'll have to spend some time checking out the website group! That would be so cool to get some free stuff as money is big problem. And good idea about the library too. I'll go my public library after work today!

Beth, Doesn't the college you work at have a pool? I swim
every day at noon, and I find if I don't go enough in the
morning the swimming usually works up a BM. The rocking back
and forth motion of freestyle really helps. -Bob

I wear braces on BOTH knees. and sometimes it's hot and I always feel like a huge dork, but they REALLY help me. I started having this weird knee thing a year and a half ago, after running down some stairs. Turns out my knees don't align properly, so it was "catching" in a weird way. Hurt and gave out alot. So I started wearing braces whenever I run, or do anything similar (I'm ok biking though), and I haven't had that problem since! And I only recently, in the last few months, started REALLY trying to build up the muscles around my knees---especially the inner muscles, these tend to be weak in women---and I think that has helped too. Don't worry--you shouldn't have to give it up completely, just give yourself a fresh start with the right shoes. And go slow at first. And do think about building up your leg muscles. It helps!

I bought a pair today in size small but they are really tight. My legs tend to retain water. I'm not sure if it's good that they are so tight (if they are cutting into circulation) or if that's how they are suppose to feel.

I only weigh about 100 pounds, so I thought the small would be okay. Maybe I probably should have gone with a medium. But if they are too big, they probably wouldn't be as supportive. So, how tight are yours?

The college I work at is really cheap. We don't even have a football team! They don't spend money on sports or anything. It's a Christain College, so a lot of the money goes to mission work.

I was shocked to hear they didn't have a pool. We had a pool in high school, for pete sake.

I would love, love, love, to start swimming. It's great all around exercise, easy on the joints, and the water is soothing.

Hi Beth,

I'm sorry you're in so much pain, that sucks. I think the others have given you good advice, I just have one other idea if you are going to work on strengthening your knees.
You can do really easy exercises to build up those muscles with one of those tube things with the handles on the end. You can put one end around something stable and then put your foot through the other handle. Then you can move your leg away against the band.. you can go to the side, to the back/front and then cross it over your other leg to work the other muscles...
I think I did a terrible job explaining that, does that make sense?? I will look and see if I can find a website or something that is more clear..

I also think swimming would be a really, really good idea if you have any way to access a pool!

Good luck!

They are definitely snug--but I don't feel like I'm cutting off my circulation. Mine are the kind that have a hole in the knee and velcro across to support the knee. Does yours have a hole of any kind?? Are they adjustable at all? If it feels too uncomfortable, take them back and try a different size for sure. You will need the blood flowing through your legs to work!

Hi Beth, Speaking of high school pools, there may be high
schools near you that have hours where the pool is open to
the general public. You might want to check that out. I
recall when my family lived in Hoffman Estates, the high
school, I think it's called Conant had pool hours open to the
public. Otherwise, there may be YWCA's or cheap health clubs available. -Bob
