Hello. I just joined the message boards. This is a really great site and I visit often. I checked the FAQ and the newsletter archives but I couldn't find a complete answer to my question. I am going to be flying overseas for a month and I was wondering what foods I should request to eat on the plane. One page I found suggested taking food but that doesn't seem very practical.

Also, are any of Heather's books available in Australia?

Thanks so much for all your great resources.

Taking your own food is really your best option. You could try the chicken/fish option they usually have, but that could include anything. If you ask for vegetarian, you're also certain to get some dairy. If you ask for vegan, it's likely to contain IF! In my experience, you can't win. I always take my own food...lots of sandwiches and snacks.

Thanks. I'll have a look at their options and see if I can figure out a good course of action.

Good luck with your trip! I hope you have a wonderful time.

I know a month of food seems absolutely daunting. It is very easy to bring enough food with you on the plane. I would seriously reccomend that. And if you are worried about the carry on limit, most airlines allow unlimited "medical" bagagge in addition to the normal limits. Check with your airline to see if they require a letter from a doctor or anything. You could go ahead and just pick a "special dietary meal" to order and see if there are any parts you could eat. Often, the parts other than the main dish are individually wrapped, so you could check the ingredients to see if you eat any of the parts. Check with your airline, most post online their definition of each special meal type. For example: American Airlines Special Meals . But, you never really know what the meal will be, so I'd take enough snacks to tide you over. Luna Bars can replace meals in a pinch. Pretzels, Homemade Chex Mix, Dry Cereal, and Sugary candies like Jelly Beans and Twizzlers travel well. If you bring your own tea bags, you can ask for hot water. I've even done that with Instant Oatmeal for breakfast on overnight flights. If you ask, the flight attendants are usually very accomdating--just be sure to ask when they aren't terribly busy (like just after take-off). Once when I had run out of things to eat, and I couldn't eat the meal, the flight attendant gave me all the left-over pretzel packages.

If you are traveling for a month, it would obviously be very difficult to take enough food for a month. But, don't forget that you can find a grocery store at your destination. Depending on your destination, some things may be harder to find, or the same brands may not be available so you might have to read the ingredients again. But, it is usually easy to find staples such as bananas, potatoes, etc.

Also, what you eat depends on where you are going, and what situation you will be in. Will you be staying with family? In a hotel? Will you have access to a kitchen/ refridgerator/ microwave, etc? If you are traveling to the USA or England or some other countries, people on the board can give you safe recommendations for new brands to the foods you eat the most. Or, other countries with different eating habits (like Rice-based Asian cuisines) can actually be quite easy to adapt to.

Good luck with your travels!

EDIT: The book is available on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble , although shipping to Australia is a bit more expensive. You could ask at your local bookstore though, most order things even if they don't normally have it in stock.

This is funny. I went on a cruise, last summer, to Alaska. And guess what? THEY SENT ME IBS friendly/safe meals to my room, which I my mother (my roommate) gave guidelines to the kitchen. No joke. And they were wonderful. Simple and wonderful. This was in case I didn't feel "safe" eating elsewhere, but well...I lucked out because there were tons of options and well you can SPECIFY--no this and no that and done this way...Also...make use of the mini-fridges and for peace of mind bring some suitable stuff. They even had gf bread, etc. Make your needs known. And have a blast.

Isn't it wonderful??

Travel always makes me a bit panicky (and I travel *all* the time, LOL). But, almost all the time, it has been fine. People just go out of their way to make it good and safe for you. I guess that is thanks to the "costumer is always right" idea. If problems arise, the phrase "as a loyal customer of ______" seems to fix things right up!

You certainly can't afford to be lax about it, and throw up your hands and say "well, it doesn't count because i'm on vacation" like you can with diets in general. But really, its just not that hard to stick with it. You do have to stand up for yourself sometimes, and make your wishes known. But once you do, it's wonderful!!

in my local Dymocks (Canberra). They only had the first one but said they could order the other one in if I wanted. Hope this helps and welcome to the boards (sorry, no tips for travel, I'm a terrible traveller).

...I've just read the other replies and I did NOT mean take food for a month Just for the plane!

I've found that although most places are accomodating, b/c airlines mass produce food and it can't be altered on board, then getting an IBS-safe meal is impossible to guarantee. In my experience, they just have categories to fit difficult eaters in: vegetarian, vegan, etc. I guess they might have a "dairy-intolerant" category now....?

I've looked the books up and 'The first year' book seems to be at my local library and it's mentioned on the Dymocks web site. I have found the other one 'Eating for IBS' at a bigger specialised book shop in the city. Thanks for the tip and the welcome.

Thanks.

I don't fully understand about IBS yet so could you explain what sort of special meal I should ask for? I've looked at the airline's web site and they do have a list but there's so many options, it makes it a bit hard to choose. What sort of things do I need to take into consideration?
