Sort of C but goes to A sometimes.

Anyhow, I'm a severe asthmatic and am going to try "the diet" but what else, those asthmatics out there on steroids, can I do to get to that healthy weight?

Desperate for answers!
PS- this board is fabulous so far. What an amazing support system.

Hi,
I have asthma too, but it is pretty well controlled with my Flovent. I do find that as I continue to eat "healthy" that I do feel better. I refuse to call this a diet, because in my mind a diet will eventually end. This is for life!

I have Crohn's disease. I have been on Prednisone three times for flare ups. The longest I have been on it is about a year. One of the things that I notice is that prednisone will make you hungry. I remember waking up in the middle of the night STARVING. I would eat a bowl of cereal and go back to bed. The other issue with pred for me was water retention.

My question for you is that is your asthma stable to the point where you can do any kind of activity - even if it is just walking back and forth across your living room. If you are able to do that, AND if you have your doctor's OK, you might consider a walking plan. Get your doctors imput on this, please!

If that is not an option, then if I were you I would concentrate on small, frequent, low fat meals. Many of the dietary principles entailed here will do just that. Many of us use a website called FitDay.com. It is free to use it. I go into the site several times a day as I think about it. Then at the end of the day, I post what I did. Feel free to ask questions! We are here to support you and we are all in this together.

Take care,
Karen

Thanks for replying!

I'm severe asthmatic, 1/8 of my lungs are scar tissue and I blow a 400 MAX. But, I'm very stable. My doctors have alwways been amazed at how well I do despite how bad my asthma is. I refuse to take more than 2 puffs a day of my Symbicort. I believe that Symbicort has helped me gain the weight, though. I was a size 5 in high school 10 years ago. I think I'm one of those freak cases, that is the "un-statistic" that actually gains on these inhaled steroids too. My doctor agrees. So far i've had no luck in explaining it.

I do Fit Day too, lol. It helps. The diary has been an amazing outlet for me. See, here's my problem. i went to the gym 3x a week for 4 months last year and never lost a pound. I was working up to the point of attacks alomst every day too. It was awful! I do a lot of walking, try to get it in every other day.I was a waitress for ten years, too. Never lost a pound when i went back this summer to it either.

But so far, because of Prednisone doses I get once or twice a year, I have not lost much. I actually gained ten pounds in ONE DAY because of it last summer. Scary, huh? It seems much more difficult to peel off the weight for me, even if I'm dieting, which I was, and working out religiously for me, which i was.

But I have a feeling about this Heather weay of life, and that it just might work. Who knows how complex IBS-C is? Maybe this is just what I need. Maybe my whole system is out of balance due to eating all the wrong things all along. i've done low carb, and low calorie, etc, and nothings worked. in fact, i was gaining on whole grains.

Keep your fingers crossed. Please!!

Sorry to hear you have Crohn's. it sounds rotten! Does Heather's way help you a lot?

I'm not Karen, but take heart. Heather's diet is likely the answer to your prayers. It's healthy, low fat and lots of people lose on this diet. Plus they feel TONS better. Follow the dietary guidelines and post any questions that you have on the diet board. Hugs, Alicia.
