Do exercises like crunches, help build the muscles that could help us have a BM?

I have not had to use these muscles a lot in the past because I was not eating enough and also having diarrhea for a few years. I think that caused my ab muscles to atropy. Now I am constipated and I am thinking it may be caused partly because my body is not used to having food in the system and actually needing to do something with it to push it out!!

What do you guys think?

Thanks again experts!!

Hi, the abs shouldn't really have much to do with the peristalsys of a normal bowel movement, and when used for such are probably straining to deal with constipation etc.
But having good toned abs certainly helps support your whole body, just watch any Pilates video and see how much they talk about the corset/core muscles, and in general would have to be helpful to the digestive system and overall health.

The abs are a totally different set oif muscles.

Just don't go too over-the-top at first as some people find over-exercising their abs can make the IBS unhappy.

I didn't realize that these muscles were not involved in the process of being able to "go". I do tend to strain and push when I am so desperate for a BM. (Not a good thing, I know as hemmorhoids are the result). But when needing to go so badly, I just want it out!!

Okay, so guess there is no particular excercise to target the muscles that are actually involved in this bodily function? Just walking or yoga or any overall movement, is that correct?

General exercise (and yoga in particular) can improve your circulation and help to regulate your digestive system, but you never actually "work-out" the muscles involved in having a BM. And don't strain...just sit there, even if it takes AGES!
