OK, here's the deal. I gave up coffee when I first started Heather's diet over a year and a half ago, even though it didn't give me attacks (even w/real dairy cream, and I am formerly lactose intollerant). Then I started convincing myself that I deserved a little pick me up some mornings (true) and that turned into a full-blown return of the coffee habit. Now that I am trying to lose weight, I want to see if it would really make a difference if I went back to tea every morning. How can I calculate how many calories this coffee is costing me, and how do I determine how many pounds I would lose by cutting this out? The only site I know of to do calories is fitday and they only have a category for coffee "prelightend sweetened w/sugar." I'd like to calculate based on the exact amount of cream and sugar I add. Just want to know if this deprivation would be worth it!

Thanks, Shell. I usually have a 16 oz coffee. I add 3 sugar packs - not sure how many tsp are in each pack. I add half and half until it's the right color . . . I'll have to wait until tomorrow to see how much that really is!

Hi, I just count the creamer as a point. I was able to use halfnhalf as well (until last August). I think the brand that I used was 40 calories for two tablespoons. I would measure out one tablespoon for each of my two cups. I think each of the sugar packets is a teaspoon.
Coffee is not a trigger for me either...it actually helps keep me *regular* (this is why I have not posted for a while. I am not totally following the diet and I do not want to confuse anyone who comes onto the board who is new to the diet)
Take care,
Karen

Take care,

Thanks, Karen. I think I've determined that I use about 3t of sugar and 3T of half and half. So that would make . . . approx. 175-200 calories/coffee, depending on where I get it. Hmm, this is a toughy - I think this requires more thought before I give it up
Shell, do you know how to determine how much weight I could lose if I cut out approx. 200 calories/day? And thanks for the tip about UFOs . . . I never even thought about confusing others with my slightly less than conventional food choices

Well, 500 calories a day less than your BMR is recommended for losing 1-2 pounds a week on average. Two-three cups of your coffee would almost be that amount, so if you're consuming the calories of your BMR at the moment, cutting out 2-3 cups of coffee a day would be a weight loss (guide only of course) of 1-2 pounds a week! Sounds worth it to me.
Btw, Sparky, I didn't realise that you were stable!

Oh Shell,
You are so funny! Maybe the board should be renamed "Area 51"!
You got me...I have not posted because I did not want to lead anyone astray. I have been slacking up however...and need to get back on track. I am on a plateau...I only have a few more pounds to go to get to where I am at a healthy BMI. I am only 4'9" so every pound shows!
I moved to Maryland in 1999. I put on over thirty pounds there! Part of it was my surgery in 2000, and part of it was that I was unhappy there. We had no family in the area. We also did not have a scale. Finally, I gave in and purchased one and I went into shock! I started with ediets, then tried diet-to-go, then Weight Watchers. I did the best on WW because of the accountability factor. When I moved here, I went into a crohns flare...and dropped 10 pounds. It stabilized and is trying to creep back up. I do not want it to creep back up! I slide a little over the weekend...but I promise to myself and to everyone else that I will start posting again. If I don't, then you can send me an email version of a "slap up side the head"!
Take care and have a great weekend!
