Where to start exercise-wise? I haven't exercised for AGES, I used to run before I got sick, but haven't been able to - now I'm strong enough to start again but I'm now sooo lazy and really want to get back into it - any tips on starting off small, coz I know that once I'm into it, I'll love it like I used too!!?

Hi Nik,

I'm in a running club, and I find that excellent motivation to go, even though I have only done 2 races. Another way to motivate yourself might be to enter a race that's a couple of months away (maybe a Race For Life 5k?) and train towards that.

I don't know how out of training you are, but if you go to Runner's World they have some schedules for beginners. I only started running in September, but I was already pretty fit from cycling, so I found their beginner's training too easy. Whatever you decide, at first it's wise to run for 20 min max, 3 times a week.

I'd also recommend starting a good stretching routine (I use the New York City Ballet Workout), as that way you will run less risk of getting injured and giving up.

5k is only 3 miles- it's seriously not too hard to build up to that distance (my first race was 10 miles!). I thought the running club would be too hard for me too, but there are a lot of slower women who go.

Have you thought about cycling? Because it's non-weight bearing it's a lot more gentle on your joints.

I'm useless with figures! That doesn't sound too bad - although have gotten v. lazy!! I might consider it actually, what time do you do it - in the day or after work, in the week or weekend?

Hmm, cycling, I haven't done that for ages either - good idea! I must remember where I left my bike....

I ran until I destroyed my knee and my ankle (opposite legs at that) and then I didn't do anything but walk for a few years.. and then I found biking and I can do it forever without pain...

The best way to start running (from someone who used to be expert at giving up!) is to try to run for a certain time at first- 10, 15, 20, 25, 20 minutes, and add on 5 minutes more each week. Or run/walk.

Good luck, whatever you choose!
