What do you think triggered your IBS? I am 56 years old and have known for years I have had it and worked on living with it (not always successfully) but only recently thought about what started it all. I have had no stomach trauma as Heather notes (i.e. surgery, childbirth) at the time I had my onset but did have a lot of emotional trauma (at 16 I lost my Mom after her 1 year illness, tried to carry on my life as a Sr. in H.S. i.e. prom, graduation, started/quit nursing school and started a full-time job). Has anyone experienced emotional trauma as the onset?

Hello,
I believe emotional stress caused my IBS to become worse, at the time I was working 3/10 hour days with a 1 hour commute each way, and if any of you are pharmacy workers, you know how that is. No breaks, running the entire 10 hours, food inhaled and VERY high stress. Also, my dog of 11 years was declining in health, and I was becoming her full time caregiver, and while all this happened, my mom had a nervous breakdown and had to be placed in a out-patient mental health program. My husband wasn't very understanding at this time either, and I felt pressure from him. (he is much better now!!) I have changed most of that, with Gods help, and I now work for a long term care pharmacy, which means no customer interaction/stress, and 1 deadline for the day at the end. It can get stressful, but not like retail. My dog has gone to heaven, and well,my mom still needs help. I think the stress changes, attitude, and Heather's diet has finally got my IBS under control.
