I had a colonoscopy recently and asked about the horrible phosphosoda prep...the nurse told me a lot of people vomit after the 2nd dose and the 1st one is usually sufficient....if that's so WHY do they tell you to take a 2nd dose...I can still taste that horrible stuff...hope all goes well. Judy

Hi All,
No colitis. No polyps. No cancer. Diagnosis of IBS stands. Nothing they can do for me at the moment, but have ordered me to rest and to eat, to gain my strength back.... yesterday with empty colon, I was down to 96 lbs because I've had such bad D.

And, the doctor ordered me to not work til Wed at the earliest. I called my supervisor at the theatre who had gone home by the time I rolled in at 7:30 p.m. after my tests in Boston at 2 (Yes 2 p.m. folks!)

What an ordeal.... I was at the hospital for 4+ hours for what is supposed to be a 30 minute procedure.

The phosphosoda had made me SEVERELY dehydrated (having thrown up all morning...), to the point where the FIRST thing they did on seeing me was to rush me into a bed, put an IV on my arm and put me on a fluid drip. I went through 1 and a half bags of fluid before they even thought about sedation.

The procedure itself was PAINFUL, and normally it's not that bad. He said my problem was a combination of being petite, and having a tight "corner" in my colon, which was the worst part of it...

I now have lots of gas-- they add air to your colon to get around tight corners, and since it was very tight, there's a lot of air there.

I'm drinking my peppermint tea and I started my 1/2 tsp of Acacia this morning... switching from Citrucel to see if it gets things under control better. I might take both, the doc said I was in no condition to discuss it yesterday after 2 shots of pain meds and 2 shots of Valium in the IV.

Anyone have any tips for getting my strength (and my weight) back quickly?

Thanks for all your support. You are all so great... Truly.
Karen =)

Ohmigoodness, Karen, what an ordeal! Glad it's over, feel better soon.

To gain weight, eat plenty of soluble fiber foods AND some good protein to build you back up, plus some insoluble fiber for general health of course. Don't go too low fat but stay away from rich food. Go through the dessert section of the recipe board or Heather's book. Make one of each and eat every bit! Nuts are remarkably high calorie, just eat them with a soluble fiber food like crackers as a snack. Check out the soy and rice ice creams available. I hear they're heavenly. Lots of angel food cake.

Just don't eat too much in one sitting. Break it up into lots of small meals and snacks. Keep that petite colon full and happy!!

Let us know how it goes, or come over to the Vegas board and report in your calorie counts and weight gain rather than weight loss like the rest of us!!! I tried to get Casey to do that -- maybe if you do, she'll try it again!

HI- just wanted to say that I am glad your results did not show any more serious problem--altho IBS is enough, thank you!! Very courageous, you are--I am a wimp on those tests as I throw up when I have tried to take liquid Gavescon or other OTC liquids--YUCK!! But good for you--hope you are recovered and feeling better...

Karen, Oh my, my you did have a time of it. I feel for ya!!! I thought I had a bad time with my colonoscopy. I threw up after the procedure due to the pain meds. I didn'thave too much trouble with the gas afterwards but I do remember for a few days still passing yucky stringy, kinda bloody stuff (sorry for the description). I guess the scope kinda cleans ya out I guess.

I too had pain apparently during my procedure cause I said ouch at one time and they upped my drugs. I don't remember it but that's what they told me. You said since you are petite they said they had trouble rounding the corner. I should have informed you with my last post that they actually used a pediatric colonoscopy on me cause I too am petite. I had been down to 83lbs before my test(I'm now stable at 91lbs) I had c-diff which is a terrible infection caused from antibiotics so I had lost A LOT of weight before they discoved it was c-diff. Maybe next scope you can suggest a pediatric one. Hopefully though they told you the same thing they told me. Don't need another for 10 years! Woo Hoo!!!!

I'm so glad your results turned out ok. Now, you like all the rest of us can officially say you have IBS and only that!

Yep, couldn't get my second dose down either so I just stopped on my own. I figured I'm gonna throw up if I drink another bit of it and then what's the point of even drinking it. I was told that I was cleaned out so deciding on my own to not drink the second dose was ok. I also questioned why they don't prescibe according to weight as I was only 83lbs at the time. Nope, they said you have to drink it all no matter what the weight. Prooves they were wrong!

Karen,
So glad your getting onthe right track and conrats to you on a clean colon procedure. I too suffer to gain weight. I weigh 114lbs and I'm 5'8. I recently gained 4lbs and hope to gain a total of at least another 16lbs to reach 130.I've been on the diet program for 11months now and it takes some time to balance out.I eat quite a bit of the desert foods and I eat high protien and carbs and get a small amount of fruits and veggies everyday into my diet.I have been recently trying to eat a little higher fat content in my diet to gain some weight. If your not taking a probiotic try it. I like the jarro-dophilus and been taking it for 2 months now. Also with every meal have a cup of chamomile and peppermint to help with digestion and ease of the stomach. If you haven't tried soy yogurt it's great. Start with a little everyday and gradually work up to two yogurts a day. Soy can cause gas and bloating if your not use to eating eat. Also you can try beano before you eat. I found rice dream drink enriched plain is wonderful for me, as I can't drink the soy. I buy rice dream bar ice creams.Yum!!
I eat pretty well considering I use no meds or fiber supps.
Here's a typical eating day for me.
IBS safe waffle with 1 soy yogurt(plain or fruit) for breakfast and half banana sliced.
Snack slice of banana bread of a banana muffin homemmade with a cup of tea.
Lunch a bowl of steamed white rice and grilled chicken and zucchini and mushrooms. Lemonade.
Snack hand full of tostitos chips and some avocado slices
Dinner Stir fry shrimp with veggies and white rice.
After dinner snack angel food cake and tea.
keep in mind these are not big meals but moderation. I eat all day long.
So as you can see once you get stable and stay stable you should be able to eat all kinds of the recipes from the recipe book or exchange. Hang in there it will happen.
Sherri

I'm so glad to hear your test results are negative -- and -- that they're OVER. what an awful ordeal for you!

Try to move around a bit to get rid of the gas (there are some yoga poses on this website designed for 'passing wind') and then sleep it off. And take your time getting to your new job... it would be far worse to have to call in sick after the fact.

Wish i had weight-gaining ideas for you that didn't include ice cream or veal saltimbocca ;-> can you tolerate peanut butter? or rice krispie treats (made w/1 tsp canola oil)... i guess you'll have to be snacking alot.

If you can tolerate Metamucil wafers, 2 of them are 120 cals. 5 g fat... don't know how much fiber you're taking but that would up your calorie intake...

Good luck and feel better soon.

I don't have much for tips, but I can tell you I experienced the same thing during my colonoscopy. The only thing is, is that my doc had to stop before even getting through the first turn. I was bawling my eyes out the whole time, yet I was sooooo drugged that I would fall asleep in between each painful episode. I feel for ya!!! At least you know it is IBS, and not something much worse. I hope that you start feeling better soon!! Take Care!!

Wow! Did you have a time of it or what??? I know that IBS is nothing to relax about, but when you consider the possibilities that were ruled out with the colonoscopy, I can't imagine how relieved you must be. I do know one thing. I am scheduled to see a GI in 2 weeks and I'm sure he's going to schedule a colonoscopy (it's been 7 yrs. since my last one) If he prescribes the phosphosoda method I will refuse; I'm hoping for the pills (I know; I know--I'm a whimp)But after my last colonoscopy and as sick as I got, I just hope I don't have to drink any of the yuk. Anyways, so glad yours is behind you; be nice to yourself and just try to relax the next couple of days. Let you mind take a couple of days of as well....

God Bless,
Janene
