I'm 4 days into the IBS diet (ok as close to it as I can be while weaning myself from Mountain Dew and red meat), but I've already lost 3lbs and have found I'm often light headed in the evenings. My guess, this is from mostly the lack of sugar that I used to eat.
My current daily diet:
1 cup cranberry juice w/lime juice 1/2 english muffin plain 1 cup of animal crackers or corn pops 1/2 cup Mnt Dew tortilla wrapped organic turkey w/sliced tomatoes slice of angel food cake 1/2 cup of applesauce 1.5 cups of rice or pasta w/2 tbl red meat (or shrimp or chicken) 1/2 cup pretzels A combined total of 60 oz of water during the day.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to safely get more sugars or anything else to keep from getting light headed?
Thanks LauraY

Try eating very frequently: every two to three hours. Also, make sure you are getting healthy sources of protein and eating enough in general.
Good luck!

Hi LauraY,
Sounds like it might be your system getting used to less sugar. Have you tried eating some of the angelfood cake in the evening when you tend to get lightheaded. I think it has lots of sugar. Also several small meals divided during the day might help. When I get lightheaded and nauseated from low blood sugar I usually eat a couple of tootsie rolls and that helps me.
Also, you might do a search on the web for low blood sugar and see if you can get any ideas from that.

Watch out - the animal crackers are likely to have dairy in them which may cause problems. Everything else sounds OK - but watch for the sliced tomatoes - even I can't tolerate them. Try it without. Also, I think you're just plain not getting enough to eat. EAt as much soluble fibre if you like if you're worried about losing weight. IE eat the whole english muffin. Try to eat lots of soluble fibre and then add in some veggies and fruits. Rule of thumb: cook, peel, mash and puree. Good luck and post if you have any more questions. PS - eat frequently - eat 5 or 6 small meals a day as opposed to 2 or 3. That should help as well. Don't let your stomach get empty.

Try some hard candy for some extra sugar. I usually have some around in case I can't eat anything and I'm starving. Just avoid the sugar free kind. And brush your teeth right after!

Hi Cara,
I have been eating tootsie rolls for years. The little miniature ones. They have never bothered me. I know everyone is different so I hate to say they are totally safe.
I noticed in the ingredients they do contain condensed skim milk & whey. I know a lot of people can't tolerate dairy.
Ingredients: sugar, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, condensed skim milk, cocoa, whey, soya lecithin, artificial and natural flavors.

I don't do good with dairy, never have. But sometimes I see that 'condensed skim milk' ingredient at the end of the list and I wonder if it's ok? Does anyone know? I'm guessing I should stay away from it Thanks Barbie!

Sometimes a little bit of a trigger type food won't bother me, it's just a matter of experimenting. You might not have a problem with the tootsie rolls. I'm at the point where I experiment with everything to see what I can eat and what I can't (turns out I can't even eat pretzels, and they are supposed to be safe).

I would eat a small amount and see how you are. I think you'll be ok.
