Hello all! I wanted to ask a question about alcholic drinks. I know it isn't good for IBS and we are all different. I have been going out here lately and I usually have a few drinks with the new boy I am seeing. I usually drink bloody marys because vodka and the v8 don't seem to really bother me. Sometimes bloody marys aren't so good with your meal so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I don't drink caffine! I used to drink crown and cokes but the dark liquor and caffinated beverage don't do well with my IBS. Any suggestions on som vodka drinks that I could try? I don't like anything sweet really because that irritates my tummy too. I like cosmopolitans but that is too sweet after 1 or 2 drinks. Any suggestions?

This is a hard one because we're cheeting whenever we do this - be careful! so, while you're cheeting - There are loads of vodka martinis in varrying degrees of sweetness that you could try. Also, for dinner, have you ever tried white wine? It sometimes tends to be easier on the tummy. Just a thought!
Good luck!

Hey Doe, I'm with you, I'd like to find an alcoholic beverage to have with friends once in a while, too. I'm not much of a drinker but sometimes just one or two would be nice. I'll keep reading the boards to find everyones input.
Good Luck with your new guy.

Yes I know it is cheating but not all of the drinks irritate me. I have to just keep things in a balance. A few drinks and I am good and usually switch to water. I always have to have eaten before I have a few drinks too or I get ill. I used to like to drink white zen quite a bit but haven't tried it in a long while. I may give it a go this weekend. Thanks for your suggestions. How can I find out more about martinis? Do you have any favorites?

Thanks on wishing me good luck! It is new and we usually go out to dinner and have a few drinks. Let me know if you find anything interesting to drink out there! I am ready to try something new that doesn't upset my tummy!! Bloody marys are really the best way for me to go but they get old sometimes!

Doe,

I haven't been drinking much lately, but I have traditionally been a vodka girl. Some good choices are vodka & cranberry juice, vodka collins (vodka, lemon juice, and 7-up I think), and if you really don't like sweetness at all, you could go for a vodka tonic (like gin & tonic but with vodka).

Good luck!

Well, gee, Davina. This is a toughie.

How about Stollie on the Rocks then? Just straight vodka. Daddy always told me, "don't mix your drinks. It's the sweet stuff that'll make ya sick."

However, I have had a screwdriver with no bad effects. Do you do okay with orange juice?

Don't forget to have some bread FIRST, limit your quantity to only one drink, and have more soluble fiber with the drink or after.

Enjoy!

Bev

I knew the comment about Jack was coming!! I used to feel that way about crown and I can still drink it but not with the coke. I don't like liquor on the rocks, I wished that was my preferance though! I have a girl friend that drinks crown and water. She says the same thing as your father...don't mix it with anything or you will get ill! She never has hangovers. But I just can't stomach the liquor straight! I am curious about some martinis though.. It isn't that I like the taste of vodka, but that it doesn't seem to hurt my tummy as much. I haven't tried OJ in a while. I may have to give it a try soon! Thanks Bev!! It is always a pleasure chatting with you!

There's a pile of vodka-based cocktails listed here:
drinkoftheweek.com

I like a vodka gimlet: vodka, fresh lime juice, and ice. A regular gimlet is made with gin, and like martinis, you can have the same thing if you ask for it with vodka. Just watch out they don't use that nasty Rose's lime juice -- use fresh.

Vodka and lemonade is a nice summer cooler, and if you like pineapple juice try vodka (or white rum) with pineapple. One of my favorite blends is:

  • 1 shot bacardi rum
  • 1 shot malibu rum (coconut flavored rum)
  • 2 shots pineapple juice
  • splash of tonic

In a tall glass with not too much ice.
This would be okay with vodka too.

RE: wine -- Stay away from that icky white zinfandel; that's an awful thing to do to a grape. Try chardonnay or pinot gris.

Doe:

Are you crazy?! Do you have a death wish?! Seriously!

Alcohol is one of the biggest IBS no-nos. There is no such thing as an IBS-safe alcoholic drink. However, if you want to challenge your IBS big time and risk an attack, then having an alcoholic drink is definitely the way to do it!

I, personally, cannot touch a drop. Even a thimbleful of alcohol would send me into a downward spiral of IBS-D and agony. Even thinking about having an alcoholic drink irritates my IBS!

Evian water is the strongest drink I drink and I can always walk a straight line afterwards! I would highly recommend a good bottled water, and the bonus is, it looks just like Vodka!

I appreciate your concern. And yes, it is a trigger. However, we are all different. For example, I eat dairy yogert and do fine with it. I can drink certain things and they don't bother me, others do. I don't drink to get drunk but I do like to have a couple when I am out on the town. I drink about 4 liters of water a day by the way. I am IBS-C so it is a MUST! Thanks again for your concern.

Hey Davina,

A hundred years ago, before I discovered Jack, a martini was my drink of choice. It's all booze except for a tiny splash of vermouth, so I can see why it would be easy on you. Martinis on the rocks are fabulous! Goferit.

Ironically, in 1967 the diet everyone was on at the time was "Martinis and Whipped Cream," an extreme version of the now-popular carb craze. It excluded everything except booze, beef, and more booze. You could eat all the cheese you wanted, as well as chocolate pudding with tons of whipped cream. I was in pig heaven. Lost 30 pounds!

One side effect of the diet: even though I was always a "D", this was the one time I became "C". When I finally "performed," weeks later -- that's WEEKS later -- I gave birth to a giant football. It wasn't pretty.....

LOL! Thanks for the graphic image, Bev!

I am definately saving this thread- good info for me to experiment with 3 months from tomorrow on my big 21 B-day!
Now I will know what to get places- vodka seems to be the only thing that never bothers me.

I also have C and do okay with vodka martinis. I only have one, though, to be safe and because they are strong :D I guess it depends where you go out (in reference to finding out about martinis). You can always ask the bartender if the place doesn't have a drink menu. I always try something new, so I can't recommend one kind.
I also find that I can handle one or two LIGHT beers (low carb included) or Mojitos (light rum, sugar, mint, and soda water). I eat the mint, which my friends think is wierd, but I just tell them it keeps my breath fresh all night!
