Hi All,
I think I had asked this question a while back, but did not get much of a response, so I thought I would ask again.

I am allergic to splenda, and stetiva has a bitter after taste. So, what sugar substitue to y'all use instead of sugar in your cereal or coffee or whatever...is it okay to use equal or sweet n low???

To answer your question with one word: NO! Equal and Sweet-and-Low are a NO-NO.

Quote:

Artificial sweeteners, particularly sorbitol, can trigger pain and diarrhea.

ALL sugar substitutes are a trigger. All of them. The only one that's "safe" is stevia (I'm assuming that's ok because it's not artificial).

Bummer, eh? I used to use artificial sweeteners too... now I just use sugar.

PS - Coffee is a no-no, too.

How about brown rice syrup and barley malt syrup? They're derivatives of those grains; no sorbitol, not artificial, and very usable in baking, on your cereal, in your beverages, etc. Comes in a jar and spoons or pours out like honey. Has a slightly musky sweet flavor (that's one way to describe it, anyway) that may take a little getting used to, but is definitely sweet. There is also a powdered version of barley malt sweetener which is a little easier to use, but personally, I don't like the taste as much.
Found out about it by watching "Christina Cooks" on PBS; if you don't know about her she's quite macrobiotic, but she has a lot of good ideas for vegetarian, low-fat, and low-sugar recipes.
You can find it at co-ops, health food stores, or the ever-popular Trader Joes. I personally don't seem to have gastric issues with Splenda or other artificial sweeteners, I just don't like to use a lot of them, and choose not to use sugar because I'm borderline Type 2 diabetic. So this stuff was a real nice find for me. Check it out; you might think so too.

you see that's what I have been using is regular sugar, and I am afraid it will inhibit me from losing weight....stetiva i dont like the taste...I dont drink coffee, but I meant to say teas which I happen to like sweet. I have a bad sweet tooth...okay so sugar is the way to go...and all these years I stayed away from sugar using splenda on everything....until I got sick...
Thanks for your help.

My general preference is one drop of stevia per ounce of beverage. It works well for me.

For years I chewed a sugarless gum that had sorbital. I had no idea that this stuff caused diarrhea. The moment I found out I stopped the gum. Now if I have anything with sorbital I will have stomach problems and it also give me a migraine. This stuff is terrible.

you might try another bran of stevia...they are all different. I like NuNaturals. However, that being said, it is better mixed with something else...like sugar or another substitute. It would cut down on sugar consumption if you mixed the two.
