Dear Shelby,
My mother is a breast cancer survivor and I respect her greatly for it. While she was going through radiation for breast cancer, she was also taking care of my father, who at the same time was undergoing intensive and highly toxic chemotheropy treatments for melanoma skin cancer. Both are now well. It so wonderful that so many more people - yourself included - are surviving cancer these days. I hope you can find someone to talk to about your anxieties - talking always helps you feel like you're not alone. And please know - you are NOT alone. We will be thinking of you and praying for you and you are one of thousands of breast cancer survivors who have become inspirational to younger girls like myself.

On the soy - I have also read things about links to breast cancer - especially those in high risk categories. Learn more so you know all the facts and not just the little bits that will make you worry. Soy somehow actually agrevates my IBS so I have never been able to use it. I use rice milk and almond milk. The almond milk is VERY sweet and works for cooking deserts that call for milk. I can also handle skim cows milk in small doses, but I know that's a no-no for lots of people.

Be encouraged and be blessed - you are a survivor - God has blessed you richly.

Hope your day gets better.

Hopefully this doesn't sound too wierd, but I have noticed if I have too much soy product(s) in a day, my breasts get real tender. Also my breasts get real tender a whole 10 days before my menstrual cycle and I was never like that before.

My nutrionist told me that you can get too much soy. She said having three servings a day repeatedly CAN be harmful! I am going to cut way back on soy, as I have previously already had dysplasia (PRE-cancer) cells on my cervics. Soy does effect your hormones. I think there needs to waaaaay more info given to the general public about how much is safe and healthy. And how much is too much. The Mayo Clinic has a great website, by the way.

I happen to be one of the very few here that do not use soy, at all, in anything.........if I can help it. I'm not sure to what extent the estrogenic affects are but I know they are there. I happen to have to avoid soy all together because of the affect on hypothyroidism as it is a goitrogenic. To bad, because there are some great tasting products out there. I use rice or oat or almond beverages and Rice dream ice cream. There is also rice cheese subs. There is no sub for tofu so I avoid it.
Here is a tread that was started many months ago. Some of the links may have more about the estrogenic affects.

Annie, as you cut back on soy, if you still notice the tenderness try some OTC progesterone cream. I've used Pro-gest in the past with great success for the same complaint as you have. BTW, I happen to agree with your nutritionist, but then I'm likely one of the only ones on the board that would.
(Thank goodness for free speech)

Shelby,

I know that it must be upsetting to talk about your breast cancer but please know that your story is very inspirational. Reading about how you fought it and survived makes me realize that life isn't always fair but when we dig down deep, we are all a lot stronger than we know. It continually amazes me how strong the people on this sight really are, especially when I read stories like yours. It's also nice to know that should we have weak moments, everyone else is here for immediate, unconditional moral support!

My MIL is a breast cancer survivor and I am so grateful that she's still with us.

Like you, I use soy milk, mainly for oatmeal in the morning and for baking. I haven't noticed any changes (like breast tenderness before a period) but have thought about trying rice milk anyway just for variety.

Hope you like the rice milk and thanks for sharing your story.

Kim

Thank you for your response. I hope for the absolute best for your health! I am also glad to hear you are a survivor. It is upsetting to be so confused about what we should eat or should not eat, regarding anything, and not just food for IBSers. Sending you hugs and prayers.

Hi back Shelby,

I noticed you didn't join the boards until March so I doubt you did much harm in the amount of soy you did consume. But I'm glad to hear that you will from now on, avoid it, just to be on the precautionary side.

It's a little hard at first to avoid it. One must read any and all labels you can get your hands on and go from there. I even have hubby on the lookout for the word soy on any label and if it's there, he puts it back, knowing how I feel. There is in fact many people who are allergic to soy, as it too is a common allergen, so do a google search for boards that are for people allergic to soy. They'll list foods to avoid. Wish I had the site for you but I think I lost it in the last wipeout of my computer.

I have to tell you, those rice cheese subs "ain't" that good. I just sorta avoid all cheese if I can, except for a little real grated Parmesan now and then because it is the lowest in fat, or a tad of FF real cheese. I know that is a big no-no and a trigger for most people but the fat seems to be a much bigger trigger for me, plus, even though I'm not lactose intolerant I take a lactaid beforehand. Digestive enzymes for me seems to be a must otherwise almost anything becomes a trigger.

I have to THANK you as well. First off, a huge congrats on being a survivor. My best friend who lives a state away went thru that 2 years ago. It was a living nightmare. Her breast cancer was CAUSED from estrogen supplements!!! I only see her once a year, and this year on Labor Day will be our yearly reunion. I totally forgot to warn her about soy last year. If it hadn't been for your post I wouldn't have given it at thought.........but boy, this year she will get an ear full. So thanks Shelby, for bringing this up. You may just have saved another "sister", in a round about way, from the tortures of having a relapse.

BTW, if you take a good look at the Rice Dream ice creams you'll notice that there is a big difference in fat g. in the different flavors. Although boring, vanilla has the least. Being the chocolate freak I am, I buy the vanilla and sprinkle on Giradelli's double chocolate hot cocoa mix to satisfy my chocolate fix.

Hope this helps, but don't hesitate to ask if you need any thing else..........

Kandee (so, when do I come get my new Lincoln...LOL?)
