Hi, I really need to know if there are any others out there like me. Most IBS sufferers seem to be young. I'm seventy. I've been diagnosed for a long time now (many tests, two specialists)and been afflicted for about 30 years. I have severe constipation and am on Zelnorm. The medication gives me a great deal of trouble but it's better than Milk of Mag. I don't get any respites from the discomfort, it's with me every day, chronic rectal spasms and unpredictable urges. My gastro sees me every 3 months, but there is not much more she can do except give me support. I'm trying the new diet from Heather's book, taking the acacia fiber and hoping for relief. My gut is sometimes quieter than before diet, but no relief from constipation unless I use the Zelnorm.
Anyone out there in a similar situation?
It would help me to know that this diet should help if I just persevere. Thanks.
Desparate Izzy.

Welcome to a great place! I don't know how long you have been on the diet nor taken the Acacia, but after 2 months on the acacia, I am now almost normal. I have also found the peppermint caps and tea really seem to move things along. I hope you will find relief soon. I know the Acacia particularly has made a huge difference for me!! Feel better soon!

Hi Izzy--

I'm not your age yet, but I am IBS C (most of the time, at least), and my mom and her mom are also IBS sufferers.

There are two things that IBS-C'ers cannot neglect on Heather's diet: liquids and insoluble fiber. I can't tell you how much more comfortable I am when I am getting lots of fluids. Lots means a minimum of 64 oz/day, if not double that. Do note, though, that you also have to get enough salt with that, particularly in the summertime. If drinking water or tea makes you feel more bloated, try having some pretzels or a pickle!

Also, not getting enough insoluble fiber with your soluble fiber is one of Heather's sneaky sins. I make this mistake all the time, and it just leads to more C. My goal is at least one fruit or vegetable with every meal, plus I occasionally eat whole wheat bread. If you do a search, you can find out a lot more about insoluble fiber and C'ers.

Hi Izzy!! I am also a C, I have spent many a day trying to eat the right foods to keep from having spasms, to keep from having C, to keep from.....and it keeps on going and going. I hope the acacia kicks in soon, I take benefiber, only because I dont have to order it. I can pick it up any where, I just started it yesterday. Looking forward to some relief. A while back I read a post, taking Acidophilus every day helped someone. I now take it every day, got mine at wal-mart in the vitamin section. Do a search, you can read about it, I am not good at setting up links. sorry.

glad to know ya, gayla

Hi Izzy,

I'm a C also. I've been on Heather's diet for - I think a couple of months now and I've been taking Acacia for that long also. I have found that there have been times - usually no more than a week or so at a time - when I feel better and actually go to the bathroom every day. That's when I feel great and hope that it continues on. I do find though that from time to time (like right now ) I can go days without going to the bathroom.

The food diary helps me try to figure out what is going wrong. All of Astrochicks suggestions are great. I sometimes neglect my insoluble fibre and I think that's a classic difficulty with C. I'm thinking though that you have to find the right balance of insoluble fibre because sometimes I've found that too much makes it worse.

Anyhow - sorry to ramble. Good luck and keep posting questions. This site is a great place to get support!

Ana
