Has anyone ever been prescribed vioxx for their IBS? I have both D and C kind and this is what my doctor gave me in addition to protonix for my acid reflux. Does vioxx help?

Hi Saraee,

My husband takes Vioxx as an antiinflammatory NSAID (strong) for pain relating to a bad car accident. It says it is used to relieve pain and swelling(inflammation) by blocking the enzyme in your body that makes prostagladins. It is sometimes prescribed to people with bad menstrual cramps. Decreasing prostagladins helps to reduce pain and swelling.

So it sounds like it is mainly to relieve pain caused by inflammation. I know that it works for my husbands pain. He takes it just once per day (25mg).

Hope this is helpful.

Cindy

This is a strong pain med used a lot for athritus and that kind of thing. SInce IBS is not an inflammatory type of condition -- it isn't really good for it. Besides -- it does have some heavy warnings that come with it too -- be careful.

I took it for a short time because I had a pain in my knee, but stopped it because it caused such severe swelling in my legs. I have only heard negative things about it so be careful.

I was given samples of Vioxx for arthritis. I chose not to take it because I have heard that it can cause liver damage. I think I have more than enough issues as is without ruining my liver .

I took Vioxx for Osteoarthritis. It made my ankle joints swell, my knees, wrists, and I also had feet issues. Nothing would make the swelling go down, it just had to work itself out of my body, it took over 3 months. This is a very powerful drug, and as mentioned it can cause stomach to bleed.
If you do decide to take it, take the lowest dose possible.
Good Luck to you.
