Just wanted to vent a little. Saw my first gastro enterologist today, and what a let down! I've had IBS my whole life, and went through tests as a kid, but of course, no one could identify the problem. I was diagnosed by my family doctor 10 years ago. All she told me to do was take Metamucil. So today, with the GI specialist, I expected her to be quite knowledgeable about IBS. She was fairly young so I figured she'd know more about IBS. NOT! She tried to tell me that it was ok to eat red meat - and that all I really needed was some time off work! For a specialist, it was really disheartening. She wasn't much better than my family doctor. So, thank God for Heather & this site! It's the best source around for IBS info. Why aren't the med schoolds using this site & your books to teach doctors/gastro specialists?! Today's appointment felt like she was telling me it's all in your head - an attitude I came across 20 years ago! How long will it take for the medical profession to get with it?!

Keep preaching it! I'm right there with ya. I can't STAND when they say it's all in your head. And my doctor actually seemed irritaed when I said something like, 'I read that I shouldn't eat red meat'. It's like he felt I was trying to prove him wrong and he got all upset instead of listening. Thank God for this website.

Sorry you had a crappy experience! Personally I find it best to always try to go into a doctors appt. assuming they're an idiot, that way you're not quite as dissappointed When I went to a gastro. a little while ago, I told him I wanted tests to rule out anything else it could be, and he said no! Then he told me to eat a bowl of bran every day I swear, some people.... anyway, perhaps you should look around for a new GI specialist? Maybe you'll get lucky?

I knew my new GI was a good one when I sat down at his desk with him and he had a bottle sitting on the edge of the desk. The contents looked like mustard with relish mixed together. The bottle was shaped like something a traveling medicine doc would have carried in his wagon back in the cowboy and indian days. The label said "Dr. Phardtknockers Colon Cleanser". This guy is great, we talked about he IBS, he asked me if I needed any help with it, other than the meds he gave me. I told him about Heathers diet, and he told me it looked like I had it going on, told me he would be there if I needed any help. THen abruptly asked me when I wanted to do the colonoscopy, that went great i don't have to do it again for 5 years. yay! The last GI I had was a total A--, who should have his license revoked. It is a shame.

Do you have to use Doc's on your insurance plan? I travel an hour to see mine, it is well worth the drive. I try to choose a doc affiliated with a darned good hospital. sometimes that makes a difference sometimes it does not. Good luck anyway.

Booo, I am so sorry your appointment went so badly. I totally feel for you - if you look back through the posts, you'll find a vent or two of mine about bad GP and then bad GI doc experiences. I am still mad after my extremely non-helpful GI appointment, and am not looking forward to going back next month.
You must be so frustrated, it really seems like some docs just don't have a clue... Red meat is okay? Then why does it make me (and a lot of other people) really, really sick?? My doctor didn't know anything about diet, so said she couldn't help me there. *rolls her eyes*
Oh dear! We all need to just find one really good doctor, all relocate to that area and take up the whole patient list.
I hope you can start feeling better on your own, since the doc isn't any help!

saw mine as a follow up visit to my endoscopy, was bloated to the max and when i showed him my belly he barely touched it and said well my belly looks like that too as if to say i was just fat but it's kind of strange to be fat in just your belly and small everywhere else. Kelley1

Love your idea about relocating to all be near a good doctor - don't have much hope for Canada. We seem to be way behind the US with regards to IBS awareness!

I'm in Ottawa, Canada. I see you're in England. Are things better over there? I sure hope so!

We're fairly restricted in who we see, up here in Canada. I'm allowed one specialist's opinion. If I want another, I have to pay... I don't have much hope for the other specialists, as this one was quite young - so you'd expect her to be up on the latest IBS info. NOT! You're lucky to have found someone to help you. Thanks for sharing!

What a nightmare! Someone needs to do a check up on the doctors, to make sure they're doing their job!! At the rate we're going here, we'd all do better at their jobs. Thanks to Heather's help & info. Let's hear it for patient experts!!

DJW, that is such a shame. Is your country's medical care governmentally controlled? How can a person ever hope to get well if they dont get a choice? Good grief that is absurd! I wish I could help you. {{{hugs}}}

They're only better in that I know 1 good GI doctor and 1 good GP! All the others I've seen have been useless.

I'm in Canada as well and have seen quite a few specialists without having to pay!!!

If you get your doctor to referr you to another specialist then you shouldn't have to pay anything...I've never heard of that before!!

Where in Canada are you??

I'm in Ottawa. I thought that we had to pay for second opinions ... recent change in Ontario legislation? Haven't checked into this ... at this point in time, I'll just stick with my family doctor. I'm a lot better than I was, now that I'm on Heather's diet and doing yoga on a daily basis. Where are you?

But that's all you need - is one good doctor and one good GI. Congratulations!

Thanks for the support! I'm actually doing a lot better now that I'm following Heather's diet, and I do yoga on a daily basis. Our health system has its positive points and its negative points. Can't really complain, other than the lack of knowledge, lack of understanding. Thank God for this web site - and the great people on the message boards!

I'm in Ontario....

If your family doctor referrs you to someone for a second opinion then it doesn't cost anything.

I'm seeing another GI doc next month (appartently he's one of the best in Toronto)....because my family doctor wanted a second opinion.

Maybe it works different in Ottawa??
