Im going to the gyno on Thursday because Ive been having PAINFUL periods. Alot of people have told me that they will recommend going on the pill and I was wondering if anyone has had better luck with the new lower hormone ones. Ive seen a commercial about them and was wondering if these might be easier on the stomach?? ALSO I would REALLY like to be given a strong pain killer for my cramps - is there ANY out there that our known to be easy on the stomach as well?? I remember reading a couple posts awhile ago about one that a few of you have tried but I cant remember the name of it - I think it started with a U? lol I know thats not much help but maybe someone will know!

I actually had pretty bad cramps when I was younger, and I have experimented with lots of different brands of birthcontrol. I currently take mircette, and mircette has very low amounts of estrogen. It has helped with my cramps so far, so maybe it will work for you. i have not noticed that it has had any effect on my ibs.

Seems like I'm talking endo non-stop lately.

Make sure when you go to your doctor that you mention the possibility of endometriosis. Painful periods, upset stomachs (especially if it varies with periods), painful sex, fatigue, and many other symptoms can all be a sign of endo.
Be careful with the pill, because I read on this message board earlier today, and then I double-checked my birth control pill, and they contain lactose.
That might explain why my stomach aches clear up on my off-week. Hmmmmm.
But they probably will prescribe a pill for you, just make sure you bring up endo. And be careful with the painkillers as well. They can do damage to the kidneys and liver if taken long-term, and if it turns out that endo is your problem, can end up making your whole situation worse. On top of that, they also can be GI irritants.
I like heating pads and baths for my cramps. Also aromatherapy (as odd as this sounds) works as well for me. Lavender, vanilla, or any scent that makes you happy and calm can help ease cramps.
Hope that helps a little!

I was on the pill for 10 years and only took breaks to have my two children. After having my son 10 months ago I developed IBS symptoms and went on a roller coaster of trying to find the right pill. Every person is different and finding the right pill is basically a matching game. My doctor finally thought the Orto Evra patch would be better since it would not enter my digestive system at all. His concern was that if I was having diarrhea at least two or more times a week that I was not absorbing the hormones in the pills correctly. So I switched to the patch and for two months now it has been smooth sailing. You only change it once a week and it really sticks through showers swimming etc... you might want to think of this option.

Thank you guys for all your help! I definitely am going to ask my doctor about all these things. I didnt even think about the patch - I wonder if they make a lower hormone one? It seems like a lot better choice than pills if it doesnt go into your digestive system! Thank you!

Lower hormone pills: I'm going to ask the doctor the same thing when I go in for my annual exam...

Cramp pills: Aleve is friggin' magical if you start taking it the instant you feel the slightest cramp. It can upset your stomach, though, so take it with soluble fiber and plenty of liquid. And one of those ThermoCare hot pads (well, ok, that's not the right phrase... ) is also a good thing.

After trying and discarding 4 different types of pills, my doc put me on Yasmin and I am very happy. I had KILLER cramps always, and the D always accompanied them. I went off Yasmin one month in the last two years because I made a mistake with the pack, and the cramps were so bad that month that I really realized how much the Yasmin had been doing for me. It uses a different hormone than the other brands, so it is worth a try if you haven't had any luck in the past. I also second the other post about Aleve. If you take 2 (with food) the second you start feeling bad, they are amazing. Although, now that I'm on Yasmin, I seem to be fine. I also really like Excedrine, because the combo of tyelonl and asprin plus caffeine (yeah yeah I know we're not supposed to) really helps a lot.

Well, I just recently stopped BC pills after 18 years and haven't noticed a difference in my IBS. I do think they help most girls with cramps and such. The prescription drug that was talked about before is ULTRACET, it is tylenol based but stronger and shouldn't upset your tummy. I take them a lot!

There is a prescription strength for Aleve, I used to take it years ago before I went on the pill (Loestrin), can't remember the name. It could be hard on your stomach, I was fine. I am only mentioning the prescription strength because with the health insurance I have it is cheaper to get a prescription than over the counter meds. I have stuck with Loestrin, I think it is high in the hormone category, but nothing else seems to work for me. Oh and just a side note I was told by the nurse that when you switch around birth control pills be careful with sex for the first pack of new pills. Of course this is the same nurse who told me this after the fact (I did not become pregnate) so take this information for whatever it is worth.
