Boca Burgers and Equalactin?

Hi everyone! I'm still pretty new to this diet, and I have a couple questions... Are Boca Burgers bad?? Because I ate one yesterday and it didn't feel too good. They have wheat gluten in them - do you think that's what triggered an attack? Or are those supposed to be safe and maybe it was something else I ate?
Also - I've been taking 2 Equalactin tablets every day..and I just read on the package that it says, 'Don't take for more than 2 days'. Is it bad to take it every day? Is it a fiber supplement or is it just to help your stomach digest or something?
Thanks for your help! ~Cara

No, Boca Burgers are fine. I suspect the wheat gluten is a problem for you.
You can take Equalactin on a regular basis, but why? It's VERY expensive, and you're not getting enough fiber (unless you're scarfing down those tablets all day long). The powder has MUCH more fiber and is MUCH less expensive.
That warning is the same that's on all soluble fiber supplements; I'm not sure why. Regardless, I don't take it on a regular basis, but just "as needed."
Check out Heather's acacia; it's really great stuff, and very reasonable in price. A $10 supply last me months, whereas a box of Equalactin ($7) would last only a few weeks, if that, if you take the same amount as the powder.
Hope you feeling better soon, Cara.

Thanks a lot Bev. I just ordered Acacia. I've been taking Benefiber twice a day - a little less than a Tbsp each time. Is it ok to mix fibers?? Can I keep taking Benefiber and then take Acacia at lunch? Should I add in 1 tsp. of Acacia at lunch and keep taking the same amount of Benefiber the the morning and at night? Sorry so many questions - I just have trouble figuring out how much fiber to take in the beginning. ~Cara

Hi Cara,
Go up top to the little red pushpin where Heather has posted "Acacia Dosages." It'll explain how much to start taking at first.
Basically, you want to start SLOWLY and work your way up to about 12-15g./day. When you switch to a different fiber supplement, you want to continue taking the same amount that you have been for awhile and see how you do with the different kind.
Why do you want to mix them? It's okay; I know Mags used to take Acacia in the morning and Citrucel at night (or vice-versa), so it apparently works okay, but I'm just curious as to why you'd want to.
The Acacia is great stuff because it doesn't get thick when you mix it and it has no taste. Personally, I love it.
Yeah, I'd just continue with what you've been taking except substitute the Acacia for ONE of the dosages, and make sure it's the same amount; then see how you do with it, see if it makes any difference. If you don't notice any difference, then you can substitute it for the other dosage, and again see how you do.
I think you'll find you like the Acacia much better than the Benefiber, and you'll end up taking it exclusively.
Let us know how it works for you, okay?

Hope your doing well!
I think your going to like acacia...just start out slow!!! If you move up the dose to fast you'll get a bad tummy!!! So do go slow!!!

Wow, I can't believe you remembered that!! Thank you so much for asking...
Well like I said before they found a virus in my blood - I tested postive for Ebstein-Barr. I don't know if everyone knows what that is or not - but it's a chronic virus - like an adult version on mono. So it'll never go away - but it won't be bad ALL the time.. when I stress it'll get worse. I stress a LOT, so I'm seeing a therapist for it right now.
I actually have 2 appointments in Chicago this Wednesday. I live about 2.5 hours from Chicago, so I just wanted to get a second opinion and more blood tests. My immune system was also less than half of what it should be, so I'm seeing an immune system specialist, and an infectious disease doctor.
Sorry I have been gone from the posts for awhile! I work outside (which is just WONDERFUL for IBS - sarcasm), and I have just had a crazy busy month with doctors and work.
Also - my husband and I REALLY wanted to get pregnant this month, but I saw my GYN and she said to wait until we get results back from Chicago...and hopefully by the end of next month we'll be expecting!! I'm pretty nervous about it with all the foods I can't eat, and with this virus (it makes me really tired and my joints hurt sometimes). So hopefully everything will be ok.
Anyways - thanks so much for asking!!! I really appreciate it! ~Cara

Thanks Bev. Honestly, I don't know why I'd want to mix them...I guess because it's just easier to get Benefiber than to order Acacia and wait for the mail (if I ever forget). Thanks for all your help!! I think I'm getting pretty stable - I still have bad days, but I've been able to eat fish and chicken, and I've made tons of Heather's recipes and I love them all! Especially all the breads! Yummy. Except I make them and then my husband eats them all (that man can eat a LOT). Haha.
Take care! I'll let you know how the Acacia goes when I get it! ~Cara

Cara, you said, "I guess because it's just easier to get Benefiber than to order Acacia and wait for the mail (if I ever forget)."
Heather is working on a regularly-scheduled shipping plan for all of us taking her acacia, so that we won't have to worry about running out of it and having to order on a rush basis, etc. Pretty soon we'll be able to just get it from her on a regular basis, automatically. Pretty cool, eh?
Sure hope you like it. Yes, please keep us posted.
Bev
P.S.: Good luck getting pregnant! You'll have to keep us posted on that too....

Unless it was the vegan "flavor", a lot of the flavors sneak cheese in them, so watch for that.
I'm so glad to see you are back! A lot of us here were worried about you. Glad you're okay.

Thanks! I did check for the cheese at the store - so I made sure there wasn't any. It must be the wheat gluten because I sorta remember that bothering me in something else I ate.... Everyone is so nice on this website! Thank you. I wish I had more time to read things on here! ~Cara

Hi, I'm a new poster, but I've been snooping around here for a while. I'm finally trying to be dilegent about taking my citrucel. I have the flavorless (not sugarfree) clear mix. I'm just wondering what exactly I should mix it with. I'm not much of a beverage drinker, usually just water. I've been mixing it with Iced Tea or fruit juice, but I'm worried about the fructose in the fruit juices. Will it be really nasty if I just mix it with water? Any suggestions? Sorry to bombard you ... you just seem to know what you are talking about. Thanks, Panda

Hi Panda (I love that name - so cute! ) - I drink it with plain water all the time and it's fine. It just gives it a slight lemony flavor. Sometimes I mix it with cranberry juice too. Cranberry seems to be one of the most tolerated fruit juices - 100% unsweetened kind that is.

Hey Cara, I just read your post! Thats crazy! I have that dang virus too. Its no fun! I get really tired too. For me its really hard because I have two kids, a boy(6) and a girl (3). So rest is a hard thing to get around here and stress LOL can't seem to get away from that!
I think when my kids get older is when all my health problems will to (except for the hypothyroid )
Anyway's you need to get a good vitamin B supplement! Great for energy! I have been slacking on taking them! I really can tell a difference when I don't take them!
Well Its nice to have someone else on the boards with the same darn virus!!! Mind you I'm truly sorry you have it!
I hope you get to feeling better soon! Good luck on the baby !
Take care!

Thanks so much. Maybe tonight I will try it with just water. So far I only take it once a day. I don't notice much of a difference yet but I am trying to be patient. I've been really a mess lately though. I am preparing for exams (I'm a first-year law student) and my brother is getting married this weekend -- so there is SO much going on that I am trying to be on top of. And this seems minor, but my dishwasher broke this week. I barely have time to cook, and now I have to do dishes!!! Thanks for the advice though, really. These boards are so helpful. Glad you like "panda." My cousins dubbed me Panda a million years ago and I hated it ... until my cousins all had really cute kids who started calling me Auntie Panda!

Sweet! I thought I was the only one - haha Not that I'm glad you have it - but now we can talk about it! Did you have it before you had your kids?? I'm worried about getting muscle/joint pains when I'm like 8 months pregnant. I've been taking Vitamin B-12 - is that what you're talking about? Or is there a separate B vitamin??
Well I'm off to Chicago for my fun day with the doctors tommorrow. Maybe I'll get some blood taken - woo hoo! I've only had that done like 12 million times in the past 2 months. No wonder I'm so pale. ~Cara

Cara,
Just wanted to let you know how sorry I am to hear of your Epstein Barr diagnosis. That really bites. I understand the symptoms are similar to fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. As you know, I have fibro, so I can really relate. It sure takes a while to get used to the fact that, as you said, it never goes away. If there's anything I can do or say to help, just let me know. I'm here for ya, girl!
