I know fast food is out of the question concerning the diet. One day, we got chinese for dinner and oh I love chinese, its my fav. But afterwards, I paid the price. We got pizza last night, and I was wondering if anyone else can eat pizza? Is the sauce okae for us ibs people?? Is there a substitute to marinara sauce? It was a grilled chicken with pineapple pizza. I didn't know if the sauce was okae, and I knew the cheese was not. So I just took some pieces of teh grilled chicken, and the crust to eat. I do miss fast food, but I know this is the right course. I'm staying off the meats (except baked chicken), and sweets. I'm just wondering how everyone does fast food? I'm borrowing the diet cookbook from the library, so they should help. Thanks and Have a nice weekend:)

Don't know about the type of pizza you ate, did it have any cheese? Regarding chinese, it kills me. For one thing the MSG, even if they say they don't use it I don't trust that. Also all those veggies kill me. And then there is the the chicken that is usually greasy, fried or whatever they do to it, gets me every time. I used to just love Chinese but now just the name gets me gagging.

it was a regular take-out pizza from papa john's delivery. there was cheese on top with grilled chicken and pineapple for the ingredients along with marinara sauce. we had a 2nd pizza, sausage & pepperoni-- but i didn't want to try that. i was just wondering if anyone ate fast food pizza? i'm sticking to the diet right now, but one day i hope to be able to eat pizza. maybe i should make my own with soy cheese? oh i'm sorry about chinese food:( i will miss it myself, but if its hurting me than i know i can't eat it.

Papa John's Pizza is likely to have a lot of trigger foods in it. There's a cheeseless Amy's pizza or a soy cheese version you can get at grocery stores that don't upset people's stomachs. Tomato sauce should be ok as long as you don't have GERD.

How about if you bought one of those pizza crusts at the grocery store (Boboli, I think) and made your own pizza? You already know which ingredients you like that are safe, right?

Whether it's gluten or dairy or something else that's a problem, you can find safe pizza fixin's online, too. Just go here: www.shopbydiet.com and search for "pizza"

Lilybear,

I love pizza and really miss it. Every now and then I will eat a slice or two but I do this knowing that it may upset my stomach. Usually if I have been sticking to my IBS diet and sneak in a piece I am ok but I would never eat it unless I was home and wasn't going anywhere just in case. Sometimes I just can't help myself because I miss it.

Yeah, I felt the same way -- until I came on these boards and all these fabulous people introduced me to AMY's frozen SOY CHEESE pizza. OMG! It's to die for.

You have to go down to the health food store to get it because Safeway carries only Amy's frozen pizza with that awful dairy stuff on it. But it's worth the trip down there, believe me!

Yeah! Amy's frozen soy cheese pizza. Fast food like you've never had it before!

Sounds great! My only problem is I live in Spain and our commissary only has 3 soy products Veggie Slices, Silk Soy Milk (Vanilla, Chocolate and Plain) and tofu. Not much of a selection for someone who can't eat dairy. I have just learned to live without dairy.

Yep, just soy cheese. You can add anything you like -- maybe turkey pepperoni or sauteed green peppers, maybe some sauteed mushrooms and onions, maybe a little garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes, maybe some Italian turkey sausage . . .

Oooooh, I gotta have some NOW!

LilyBear, there was a gal on the boards a few months back who found a fast food pizza place that served pizza with dairy-free cheese. I'll be darn if I can remember who it was. Why don't you try a search for pizza and see what comes up -- okay, there may be a lot of posts -- but this was some place like Straw Hat or Round Table or Domino's. Rats, I wish I could remember. I'll try to search also ....

Thanks so much Bev for the suggestion. I am going to ask if they have dairy-free cheese whenever I go to a pizza place. I told my Mom next time she gets pizza just to ask for a pizza with: grilled chicken, pineapple, and mushrooms with no cheese (unless soy or dairy free) and no tomatoe sauce (bcos I don't know how my tummy will deal with that yet). My sister wants to go to Cold Stone's icecream or Dairy Queen for icecream. I think its okay to ask for dairy-free icecream or sorbet. If they don't have any, that's okay. At least now, I feel that its okay to ask for these things. Before I didn't want to seem out-of-place due to my diet restrictions, but now I feel comfortable doing so thanks to everyone here:) Have a great Saturday!

Good-afternoon Janey,
I enjoy pizza, KFC, chinese food, and all that other fast food stuff too. I will miss it too in time. I used to eat it before when I had C bcos I didn't know about the diet, so now I'm just starting to not eat fast food. I find that Wendy's baked potatoe and chicken mandarin orange salad are my safe fast food meals. Hee hee, before I became truly commited to this diet I would eat a meal from a fast food place and my stomach was not pleased with me afterwards, just like you. I know what you mean, its hard to not be able to eat your favorites and just treat yourself. I hope that you have been able to find new treats with the diet:) Take care.

That's a good question, LilyBear. It never bothered me before -- but I got a real bad attack last week, and the only thing that could have done it was the turkey pepperoni. It's a matter of trial-and-error. Try it and see if you err.

I sure did!

I am enjoying the new diet and feeling better. The more I get used to eating low fat and healthy the more difficult it is for me to enjoy the higher fat foods. I find they don't even taste good to me anymore. That is a good sign. Because I feel so much better it makes the things I have had to give up easier to accept.

I am weak every now and then though and give in to what my mind thinks it wants and I go back into my old habits. This usually makes me feel bad though and I quickly go back the the healthy ways.

How about you? Other than having to give up the fast food. I think the hardest for me is when my family wants to go to Taco Bell or KFC and I can't eat anything there. I just have to learn to be more organized and bring snacks along that I can safely eat.

I am going to check out the web site that Bev suggested.

Have a great evening.

I can remember every now and then. The older I get the harder it is. There are times when I call my kids the dog's name.

Just don't want you to have to go through what you did last weekend but you know how this IBS is, you could eat the turkey pepparoni again and it probably won't bother you. Let me know how the soy stuff is even though I can't buy it. I'll look for it when I get back to the states.

I order pizza all the time - half with cheese (for my fiance), half without for me. I also get mushrooms on my half. I can eat it fine with no cheese, but if we bring it home I'll throw it under the broiler for a minute or two to melt the shredded soy cheese I sprinkle on. Good stuff!

Another option - I make pizza dough in my breadmaker and top it with whatever I feel like - roasted red peppers, artichokes, tomato sauce, etc.

A couple of days ago I saw the Amy's Soy Cheese Pizza at the store - BUT the ingredients had milk protein - I was bummed and put it back.

Another thing about the fast food. You can go to Taco Bell website - it's very cool. You can get nutrition facts on each item but then customize it i.e. Chicken soft taco No Cheese and it will tell you how many fat grams etc.

I printed it out once and figured there were about four things that were 5 - 7 grams of fat and didn't have anything obviously bad. I haven't actually eaten there yet. Makes me nervous that there's hidden stuff i.e. msg in the chicken or whey in the tortilla. Who knows???

The only two places I know are safe for me are:

El Pollo Loco - I get a boneless/skinless chicken breast and flour tortilla and have never gotton sick.

Pick up Stix - House Chicken with zucchini and water chestnuts on steamed white rice. They use very little oil and I have never gotton sick there either.

Hope this helps,
Leigh

I cheat a little on the weekend. It is the only time I see my boyfriend and I don't want to stay at home all the time! I admit that I go to McDonalds and get a Grilled Chicken sandwich. I have them put it on the regular bun (with no sesame seeds) and I have them take everything off of it. Then I ask for the low-fat mayo they have in packets. So far...I have not gotten sick eating this. I am sure a lot of people would have problems though!

Hello,
My boyfriend actually worked at Taco Bell for a little while, and he says that they use white meat...grilled with some seasoning to give it more flavor.
We live in Canada, so I don't know if it would be the same in the US, but it's light meat here!

I don't know about the turkey pepperoni specifically, but some people have issues with turkey (esp. processed stuff) as it can be higher fat and harder to digest than chicken.

When I eat Chinese I always get the same two things: a bowl of plain white rice to start and then veggie lo mein (you could probably try shrimp or chicken, too) and I've never had a problem.

My local Pizza Hut has told me they'll be glad to make me a pizza without cheese, but I haven't tried it yet.

Watch out for Boboli. I read the list of ingredients and there are 2 or 3 dairy items in there. They list them in boldface - I keep meaning to write and thank them for that.

I use the Pillsbury Classic Pizza Crust in the refrigerator tube. No dairy. It fits on a medium cookie sheet (about 15 inches by 10 inches). And Heather's mushroom/rosemary and BBQ chicken pizzas are great. I use the Pillsbury crust and follow their cooking directions, but use Heather's toppings.
