quest for the best fiber supplement

I've tried psyllium, and I've tried the accacia, and although both have reduced D, they each have uncomfortable side effects that drive me crazy! Psyllium: gross bloating, some gas, and somewhat looser stools, and accacia, tons of unbearably smelly gas and constipation. Is there a way to find a happy medium, by using another supplement or by combining the two? Or is this painful, smelly gas here to stay? I'd love to hear your solutions!

Well, Laura, I've heard that psyllium is real hard on the system. You might try doing a search; I'm sure you'll find a lot of posts on it, including comments from Heather.

The acacia is wonderful stuff. It took me awhile to get used to it, and I found that fennel tea calmed down the gas problem. However, I also started my probiotics shortly after I started the acacia, so it could have been the probiotics that helped out in that department, I'm not sure.

Mags really likes Citrucel powder. She takes both Acacia and Citrucel; I think one in the morning and the other in the evening. Hopefully Mags will see this post and respond; I'll put her name in the subject line so she can spot it.

Also, you might consider Equalactin as a supplement to your supplement. It's a cure-all for me, although I don't use it like the acacia or Citrucel; it's my emergency "security blanket."

Bev

Hi,
I've just developed G over the past month with my ibs-D. Sometimes its all day, and wakes me up in the morning along with my tummy growling. I'm not sure if its here to stay (I hope not). Thanks for putting up your experience with the other supplements. I haven't tried those yet, but now at least I know the side effects. I used to drink metamucil along with fibercon. Metamucil doesn't help now but have you tried the fibercon tablets? And I still have G with citracil but not as much. Good luck Laura.

I just saw LauraS is in Canada from her Montreal post, so unfortunately if she wants a different one, she'll have to order from somewhere else and have it delivered, so it can be expensive.

I actually gave up the acacia all together. I'm back to taking the Citrucel 2x a day - have been for a few months now. Unfortunately, the acacia just didn't make me feel as well as my Citrucel.

Thanks for the suggestions, and yes Mags I am in Montreal. I would normally be alot bolder experimenting, but not being able to find anything here in Montreal is quite frustrating! The idea of shelling out to pay for shipping on a bunch of stuff that may/may not work is discouraging. I'll look harder for citrucel, since Mags gives it such rave reviews.
