Hey Girlfriend!

Did I read somewhere in here yesterday or the other day that you avoid all sugar "like the plague"? Is that true? Was it you, or someone else? Did I dream it?

I'm thinking of putting a lot of my weight gain blame on sugar. (What else could it be?!?) I have a terrible sweet tooth, and, while I follow the program religiously, I do consume a lot of sugar. Heather's suggestion to me (because of my weight issue and really REALLY wanting to lose) was to try cutting out the sugar due to their empty calories.

Did you find that you were able to control your weight when you cut out sugar? Did your weight drop significantly? I'm doing everything else right -- all the usual weight loss stuff -- except the sugar thing.

Well, I still have my Rice Crispie Treats! Let's get that out in the open right now!

As for the rest of the sweets world, yeah, I pretty much avoid them. And I recently gave up bread ('cause of the blasted gluten). Between the two, I'm hoping that I will lose weight. I have about 10 - 15 pounds to go. All I know is this: if I allow myself sweets (and gluten) I am hungry or at least craving food ALL OF THE TIME! Now, I feel like I'm eating reasonably. I tend to be a rule-bender, so it's easiest for me to just ban sweets... at least 'til I get out of the habit of reaching for them. I really think that the gluten was responsible for a real, physical hunger but the sweets-- that's mostly in my head (and a result of the whole blood sugar rollercoaster. Energy dips --> reach for candy --> energy soars --> energy CRASHES! --> reach for candy....)

I really really really advise anyone who wants to lose weight (and is IBS stable!) to try the Weight Watchers program. A lot of people like the meetings (I'm ambivilent) and like being accountable to someone for having lost/gained in a week. I like the Points- they're easy to count and SENSIBLE. You can eat what you want, so being on this diet or any other medical diet isn't a problem. You would be SHOCKED to learn what's adding to your weight once you total the Points. (I just figured out that my beloved morning smoothie is, like, 10 or so Points. Yikes. My range is 20-25 for the day, and in 4 pounds will drop to 15-20! Oy, oy, oy!)

By the way, I've been strict with the sweets and gluten for about 2 weeks (give or take) and today I WOKE UP SKINNY! Not literally, of course, but I can tell stuff is shifting around. Caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror while getting dressed and thought "Wow! You actually look kinda cute in your underpants!" This is the first time I've ever thought that. And then I slipped into my pants and they were justthismuch looser- with no extra bits hanging over the waistband! YIPEEE!!!!

I happen to think you're both pretty sweet.

Jen, congrats on feeling better about yoursef! How exciting! I agree that Weight Watchers is a great program. My mom did a very similar program called Diet Workshop when I was younger, and she loved how it made her feel about herself too. I don't know how people can get all into these stupid low carb crazes when a low fat diet is so simple and healthy and has such great effects!

I don't care for the meetings much either... they're a little too group therapy for me.

And it's interesting how the "plan" has changed... nobody's ever supposed to eat less than 20 points a day now.

That's joyful news! I've gotta get back in and see this Flex Points deal. I'm amazed at that change, 'cause I just joined WW last year....

As for the groups, I know a lot of people get a lot out of it, but I didn't, really. It's nice for tips and such, though. My best friends LOVES the meetings and really gets bummed if she can't go. I totally appreciate that, but I'm different. I do like the accountability of the weigh-in, though...

Your emails are so funny and very enjoyable to read!

I don't have a problem with weight but I do have a problem with eating too much candy which greatly affects my teeth! I am the kind of person that needs to brush their teeth immediately after eating anything or cavities start up. It's just not convenient to be brushing all the time when I'm snacking all the time. It's easy for me to reach for something sweet or hard candy or even Altoids! And I really need to give that up or spend time in the bathroom - not on the toilet but brushing away!

What's that about not less than 20 points a day (please say it's true!!!!! )!

I'm doing the points diet without going to meetings cos 1) they are so not my kinda thing and 2) with my job I'd never make it regularly. Lost 3 pounds last week! Yay! I might actually fit into my wedding dress!

Linz, congrats on the 3lbs. Great job!

When I was going to the meetings last year, the leader had one great tip that I loved. For every pound lost, give yourself a brightly-colored paperclip and then link 'em into a chain. You can have that as a visible marker of how many pounds you've lost. Hang 'em by your mirror or somewhere that will inspire you. Some people put theirs on the fridge to stave off late night binges! Mine are on my desk ('cause I tend to snack when BORED!).

Anyway, I can't wait to hear about the not-less than 20 pts thing, either!

My best friend is doing Weight Watchers in England... it's different there. There are no flex points. I think that the English version is the old version from America.

As for no one eating less than 20 points, maybe they recalibrated what makes one point? If you weigh 150 and under you're supposed to eat 20 points a day and the little book they give you the first week says not to eat less than your 20 points. I think it's back to that not starving yourself thing... maybe they've figured out that less than 1200 calories (my best guess to what 20 points is) makes people's metabolisms drop too low?

And congrats on the Weight Loss Linz!

I have no idea how to cut out bread. Sorry. Already I've cut everything else out of my diet; if I cut out bread, I'd be eating nothing!

Sorry; you caught me at a bad time. I'm having sugar withdrawals, hating myself for letting hubby throw out Heather's Rice Krispy Treats!

BTW, starches aren't your enemy; we need them, they're our friend. Why do you want to cut them out of your diet? Sugar, I can understand. (Although it's really tough to do!) But starches?

Did you read "The First Year"?

I'm with you, Bev. Bread is my one staple food... the one thing that's always safe for me! I don't think it would be humanly possible for me to stop eating it. I'm also curious, what's wrong with starches? They're actually very healthy as long as they're low fat!

RICE, Rice, and more rice. That's how I do the IBS diet with no gluten! (And the hysterical thing is: I used to LOATHE rice before I started Heather's diet!)

There's a lot of gluten-free products out there that I'm just beginning to experiment with. I got some GF waffles that are pretty dang good! And there's breads and pastas, too. They're made with alternative grain sources (like RICE!).

I use the infamous Asian Rice Noodles a lot. Potatoes are yummy (I'm a huge fan! Of the sweet variety, too).

Rice is used to make rice crackers (they pretty much taste like that cardboard used to make shoeboxes, but after you've had a few, they're not too bad and then you forget the taste of "real" crackers- or maybe I'm just fooling myself. If I am, don't tell me! I have to believe I like these!)

I LOVE sushi, so that's a nice thing to eat. No gluten.

If you go to a HFS, they should have a nice array of GF foods. You can also go to celiac.com to learn about GF life. There are also sites like The Gluten Free Mall if you want to order stuff. There are many sites out there, those are just the ones I've been visting. I haven't had too much time to just sit and read about this stuff...

I'm just starting this GF thing, so I haven't experimented too too much, but I feel sooooo much better now that I'm not having the gluten! My skin is even getting really clear. Bizarre. It's a little scary to think of the toxins I must have been holding in and the nutrients I wasn't getting....

I'm going to try adapting some recipes to the alternate flours. May even start this weekend, if I can. May make some banana bread or something with some kind of cool flour. I figure what's the harm. It may turn out for crap, but at least I'll get a laugh! (If you want more predictable results than that, the celiac and GF sites have recipe collections and boards similar to -but not as good as!- this one.)

So forgive me if we've talked about this before, but are you celiac? I can't keep things straight at the end of the day. My CFS kicks my butt.

Jen, this is great to know, as I was just telling my husband that I was thinking of joining WW next week. My friend lost 20# and my sister is on it too. I am out of control with my sweets for sure!! Have to have chocolate every single day, and the butt is showing it and the clothes are getting tighter by the week. Spring is coming and I am not going to be a bit happy being a CHUB! My husband thinking since I am on Heather's diet, that is all I need to do, besides exercise, which I am not good at, but I know I am overeating and need to get control of it. So thanks for the endorsement. PS I love your little characters, like the shark.

Glad it's not just me with the sugar cravings. Bev and I were talking about this and I just read another post she wrote that said after a day without sugar she found she just wasn't as hungry as she usually is! That's what I've found, too.

It's hard to make that decision to cut out the sweets, though, when you're in the cycle of eating them. Seems like life wouldn't be worth living, but it is! And here's proof:

I'M IN MY SKINNY JEANS TODAY!
(The ones I haven't put on out of sheer embarrassment for 4 months. I didn't even like to see myself in them, much less subject the world to having to look at it! But they're on today. YAY!)

How'd you feel when you went off of the gluten?

I've been off for a few weeks, and I feel pretty dang good, I must say.

I tested negative for celiac (the bloodtests), but since i was still having problems I think I'm getting the endoscopy and biopsy to check. I'll have to go back on the gluten first, from what I read on celiac.com, to make it worse so that it shows up on the biopsy. Ain't that a cute trick?

I guess I'll know better when I try to phase back in on the gluten. All I know is I am MUCH LESS HUNGRY now that I gave up gluten. I think I must actually be absorbing the nutrients in that food I had been eating! Like a real human! I was always SOOOOO ravenous before I quit it. I could eat and eat and eat and eat... But now I sometimes have to remind myself to eat 'cause I don't want the colon to get all empty.

What a change!

You sound just like me. My biopsy came back neg as well as my blood test...but it's not 100% accurate!

I felt MUCH better off gluten. I also went back on gluten for the testing. I am considering going back off it again with the advice of my allergist if he feels it's a good idea. I'll let you know.

Btw, do you have thyroid probs? Bruise easily? Mouth sores? Any of the other symptoms?

Oh, it IS true..you gotta be on gluten for a while for the biopsy to wok. And not just a slice of bread a day...but tons of the stuff Let me know what you decide...and if you want advice I'm here!

Hope we both figure it al out soon!

If we have that in common, then that may explain why you're hungry and eating all the time!? Do you think? Did you notice that when you were off the gluten-- a more reasonable apetite? I know they say weight loss is a sign of celiac, but my body is not the type to lose weight easily, and I had already lost 40lbs from the IBS. I think that if it is, indeed, gluten and malasorption from it, maybe my body just froze and wouldn't let me lose any more weight. It even fought to put some pounds back ON! Just a theory.

Let's do this systematically. Here are the symptoms of celiac from celiac.com:
Diarrhea CHECK
Constipation CHECK
Steatorrhea (fatty stools that float rather than sink) CHECK (+ EW!)
Abdominal pain CHECK
Excessive gas CHECK ( my apolgies. it was the dog!)
Any problem associated with vitamin deficiencies NOPE
Iron deficiency (anemia) NOPE
Chronic fatigue OH, YESSIR! CHECK
Weakness MMMM HMMM. CHECK
Weight loss YES AND NO
Bone pain NAH
Easily fractured bones GOODNESS NO, I HOPE
Abnormal or impaired skin sensation (paresthesia), Including burning, prickling, itching or tingling I'LL TAKE A PASS, THANKS
Edema NOPE, NO WEIRD SWELLING. I THINK I'D PASS OUT AND CONSIDERING HOW MUCH I PEE, IT'S UNLIKEY I'M GOING TO RETAIN FLUIDS!
Headaches* SADLY, YES
Peripheral Neuropathy* (tingling in fingers and toes) THAT HAPPENED BEFORE CHRISTMAS FOR A WHILE, BUT NOT RECENTLY
Individuals have reported such varied symptoms as:
White flecks on the fingernails NO
Fuzzy-mindedness after gluten ingestion YES
Burning sensations in the throat YES, BUT I FIGURED IT WAS THE WHISKEY.

For the love of Pete, I don't want to do a gluten overload just for the biopsy if it's going to come out negative!!!!!!

Ummm, yeah, I can answer yes to most of those questions....I'm already a vegetarian, if I cut out gluten, I'd eat next to nothing, and I already have issues weighing enough....

I had the antibody tests for celiac done, two were in normal range, one was insanely high, so they doc just said it was a false positive. Maybe I should get tested again?

Bevrs/Kree/Jen-
the reason I was asking about cutting out starches was if I were to do Weight Watchers (which I need to do again, badly!), starches are sooooooo many points and all the free foods, like veggies and fruits, etc. are not good for our IBS tummies. I wouldn't have one clue how to adapt WW for someone with IBS and not go stark raving mad hungry, so Jen (and everyone else doing it), I give you lots of credit!

I can't eat milk products, red meat or junk food because of IBS and I can't have sugar because of blood sugar problems.

Eating these foods are probably a major cause of weight gain. Not eating these things probably causes weight loss. It certainly has in my case! I weigh about 82 pounds right now. I'm trying to gain three pounds. My ideal weight (based on my height) is about 85 pounds.

So follow the IBS diet, plus cut out sweets, and soon you will look just like Twiggy!

I get all the same symptoms as well as bone and joint pain. I have been on this is it celiac is it IBS thing for 5 years. My blood tests showed one high, two normal. The IgG was the high one. Had the endoscopy and came back neg. but had been off gluten for 4 months per docs orders saying on no that won't make a difference if you are or aren't consuming gluten, hello??!! Wish I had known then what I know now, it does make a differnce. When I was gluten free I did feel better, but not all better. Same with this IBS, better but not all better. It's all very frustrating and I thought we were paying the docs to figure this out for us? Maybe together we can get some more clues. I think if you are of Northern European descent(sp?) you have a higher chance of having this, which I am. So great to have this discussion with you all.

I'm English and Irish and Scottish. I'm screwed.

I'm doing Heather's IBS diet strictly, plus having subtracted the gluten (and sugar). It's working nicely so far. If only I could get my energy back, I'd have NO COMPLAINTS!

I got a little confused... you said you were on the gluten-free diet for 4 months, or you've been back on gluten for 4 months? I've heard it can take a considerable amount of time to feel a lot better on a gluten-free diet depending on how much damage was done to the villi, etc... Wonder if you tried again in conjunction with the IBS diet, would you feel better 6 months, a year down the road? That's what I'm trying. It can't be worse than trying the "P" fruits diet!

Yes, my medical history is just that, a big confusing mess!! I'll try to clarify..I was on the GF diet for 4 months, but, but!! that was about 4 years ago. Had endoscopy, declared non - celiac. Went on bread binge, had more troubles right away, but I am non-celiac right!!so kept on bread but realized high fat bread products (like muffins)or whole wheat definitely worse that just plain white bread. Then gave up coffee (tough one), high fat meats, cheeses, sodas, all one by one after realizing they were bothering me. Found Heathers web site realized I was pretty smart to give all those up and here I am today. Doing better with really watching the fats and being careful with how and when I eat Fruits and Veggies. Like today I made a bannana, peach, strawberry rice milk smoothie and am feeling really healthy for getting some fruits in me, but 1/4 way thru get the uh-oh cramps starting so I say whoops forgot the bread base and had a small piece of bread and was able to finish the smoothie no problem!!

Now you know way too much about me but there it is. When I gave up the gluten I still remember how different, in a good way, that I felt.

Maybe I should give it another go. I wonder if it is poosible to have both IBS and celiac, and if so, then what would you do food wise?? Maybe, the same just using rice instead of flour? HMMM..sounds like what you are doing right now Jen!!!

I just want to figure it out once and for all, feel better, get on a plan, have it work, and move on with my life! Sound good anyone?

Sorry I got sidetracked by A)my kids audio tape, it is the funniest story called "Time Stops for No Mouse" narrated by Campbell Scott and B)was ravenously hungry and just had to have a piece of Shanna's Bannana Bread that I made this AM...mmmmmmmm very good! Anyway....

I am half Czechoslovakian and half Hungarian so not quite as Northern as you!

I noticed that I was much more even when GF as compared to the ravenously hungries I mentioned above.

Isn't that interesting... the ravenous hungries bit!?

I'm soooo not ravenous now. But before I was a little disheartened by how starving I felt all the time. Almost desperately hungry at times.

I'm sure one can be celiac and IBS at the same time. What a joy! A two-fer! And yes, what you'd end up with is what I eat.

It's REALLY tough for me to eat GF because many products out there aren't Kosher!

Sushi you gotta be careful with! Sometimes rice can have added wheat in it...

I LOVE SUSHI! Do you make it yourself? I'm so wanting to learn how to make it!

Ah... you keep kosher? That's ANOTHER thing to check labels for. Poor Ruchie. (Not poor you re: your beliefs, just poor you, you're going to go blind reading labels! You knew what I meant... right!? )

It strikes me that quite a few of the GF things I picked up at the HFS were marked kosher. Hmmm.... I'm going this afternoon. I'm going to look and see.

Don't tell me that about sushi... Are you serious, flour is added to rice sometimes? Oh my. Well, I haven't had troubles yet.... *fingers crossed*

I don't make my own sushi yet, but want to take a class. Maybe this summer or fall... They have some great programs around here that offer "How to Make Sushi." I've been meaning to look into it. This GF thing is just inspiring me more.

I thought it was just one or the other and have spent much time trying to prove to myself which one it was. So this is very interesting information. I may have to try Jen's approach to Heathers diet or go back to the doctors armed with information and asked to be tested again.

While I can answer yes to a lot of the symptoms, I don't fit the biggest criteria; my problem is just the opposite -- GAINING weight, not losing it.

Ruchie, how're ya doin' with the no-sugar thing? I'm doin' pretty good. Had sugar withdrawals yesterday, so fixed myself a little cocoa, and I was fine; no other sugar, not even in my tea, which is a big thing for me. Hubby wanted waffles for breakfast, but I can't eat them without syrup -- so instead I fixed pancakes and put a ton of blueberries in my part of the batter (no fruit for hubby! ), and instead of syrup used blueberry preserves. That's not sugar, right?

I LOVE not having such a big appetite, and I sure slept wonderfully -- what a treat!

You doin' well? Not eating as much? Are we happy campers, or WHAT?!

... went wonderfully. I had a hard time around 2:00 p.m. (again), so I had a cocoa. But I did real well -- even forgot to eat while I was goin' hot-n-heavy with my sewing machine. Fixed dinner, then back to the sewing. Forgot my evening snack, so just now had a small banana. Yum.

Yeah, I done GOOOOOD. I e-mailed you, honey -- did you get it? It had some GREAT advice from Michael in it about eating and stuff.

Come on, now, Girlfriend, you can do this -- if I can, YOU can! I have a LOT FARTHER to go than you, believe me, but I'm off to a darn good start!

Yeah, I feel SOOO much better without sugar. Heather once again led me down the right path when she suggested it earlier this week.

You're right -- tomorrow you'll do better. We BOTH will! Sleep tight, sugah.

Hi Jen,
I am farily new to this IBS diet. I was so called diagnosed with IBS about 2 weeks ago. I say so called because my doctor pretty much said, well your tests came back fine, no signs of cancer or polops, or crones, so it sounds like you have IBS. Of course he didn't say that is what I had until I demanded that something was wrong. I told him that it isn't normal for a person to have severe pains and bloating and gas after every meal. That is when he said well I think you have IBS...nice doctor huh. (I am in the process of trying to find another doctor)..Ok now to my question...sorry kind of got off the topic Now that i am trying to follow this new IBS diet my biggest concern is weight gain. I LOVE fruits and veggies and was eating them all day long as snacks. This I found was one of the reasons for my attacks. So what do I do now? In the past I followed Weight Watchers and lost about 15 pounds and have kept it off....however now, how do I follow it? Since I use to eat all the fruits and veggies and low fat wheat bread I don't know where to begin. I am finding that I am getting very depressed and discouraged about all this. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi cmuse! Welcome!

You can have your fruits & your veggies too with IBS...just cook em'!

Also, you can have low fat bread as long as doesn't have any triggers...like high fructose corn syrup, added.

PLEASE don't get discouraged...we're all here to help! As for your doc...we've all had ones like yours. I hope you find a better one!

Keep posting!

Don't get discouraged or depressed -- after all, you found US! And we're here to help. You came to the right place.

First of all, I think you need to find a better doctor. (Don't we all!) Good GIs are hard to come by. You need a colonoscopy to rule out other things; you have to have a confirmed diagnosis, not just "Well, I think you have IBS."

Secondly, don't worry about the weight -- for now. Right now you need to concentrate on the program. Get Heather's books, especially "The First Year." It's our bible. Read as much as you can -- and come into the boards often. I got SOOOO much better after I came "on board" and everyone here guided me along. Try the incredible recipes in the recipe board -- it's a lot of fun trying new things.

I have a weight problem as well. I joined Weight Watchers once and actually GAINED on it! So I understand where you're coming from. However, the FIRST important thing is to get stable. Learn what you can and can't tolerate, and get yourself to a point where you can start adding in some fruits and veggies.

Ruchie's right -- you just cook them. Throw your veggies into some stock, either home made or canned, and fix some great soups. Eat them with a French roll or other soluble fiber. Have your fresh fruit in a smoothie -- check out Heather's berry banana smoothie; it's fabulous.

Heather's advice to me about my weight control was to cut out all the sugar because they're empty calories. I've been on a sugar-free eating program since Monday, and I'm doing pretty well. But that's something you might want to consider LATER, after you're stable. Just focus on one thing at a time; that way it won't be so overwhelming.

It was very overwhelming at first for me, but I learned to relax (through the hypnotherapy program), and once I relaxed and "went with the flow," learning everything I could, and STOPPED CHEATING, I got better. LOTS better.

Just remember, you're with others now who have the same thing and a lot of people here are very knowledgeable -- and extremely helpful. Just ask -- ANYTHING, no matter how embarrassing (we've heard it all) -- and I guarantee you'll get better.

Welcome to the Boards!
Bev

I have ordered the eating for IBS book and have begun to read that. As you said I think it is just going to take some time to figure out what I can and can't eat. It is just a very different lifestyle change for me since all i use to eat was fruits and veggies! I will be here often and I am sure I will have more questions so thank you for the warm welcome!

Hi, Christine. Welcome to the boards.

I think you got great advice from Ruchie and Bev, so I just say "ditto."

I actually took about a year off of my weight-loss plan to get the IBS regulated. (It didn't have to be that long, but I didn't ever "regulate" 'cause I had a cheating problem. ) Like Bev said, it's best to concentrate on getting well, first. You may find that the weight comes off easily then- some people apparently do. If you're like me and you have to work at a little more (or a lot!), then ONCE YOU'RE STABLE, you can start counting calories and worrying about replacing foods with no/low-cal soups and things like that (with soluble fiber bread or rice first!). But you're going to get sick if you try to diet AND get stable at the same time.

My priority for so long was worrying about my weight. I had to forget that and forget EVERYTHING I ever knew about dieting for a while and focus on health. 'Cause being a size 4 and having diarrhea all the time wasn't going to be good enough!

Let us know what other questions you have. PS: If you're stable enough, we highly recommend Rice Krispie Treats!

Thank you for your advice...my only other question is when do I know that I am stable maybe a stupid question I know but I really don't know...what defines stable? Right now I am trying so hard to eat the right foods my diet is consisting of oatmeal in the am, a turkey sandwich on french bread for lunch with some carrots and rice crackers and i am having a hard time with dinner usually pasta or oatmeal again. My lower back has been KILLING me, I am not sleeping because my back is so painful. It seems to start in my abdomin and travel to my lower back where it throbs...any suggestions?

If any other serious medical problem has been ruled out, then some things you might want to try are a heating pad, ExtraStrength Tylenol (Ibuprofen and other NSAID's are triggers for many of us) and Benadryl to help you sleep.

Hang in there, it does get better!

Thanks Laura,
I actually went out today and bought one of those herb heat/cold pads that you can freeze or put in the microwave, I am hopeing that that will help. If it doesnt go away within a few days I think I will call my doctor. Maybe there is something more, I have no idea. The only test my doctor did was a barrium enema...which i must say was the worst thing in the world! but maybe there is something else, i have no idea! but I am going to try the heating pad hopefully that will help and I do have benedryl so maybe I will take some tonight before I go to bed. I need to get a good nights sleep, especially with work tomorrow!

Hi, again.

I know I get bad back pain when I'm having my IBS flareups! I mean, really bad. And it's with both my D and C. Ugh. I just use a heating pad and take some Tylenol and sleep as much as I can. I love those ThermaCare Heat Wraps for when I'm at work or running errands. I have been known to wear 2 at once: one on my back, one on my tummy. I was a little lumpy-looking, but hey! At least I was able to be mobile!

How do you know when you're stable? That's not a stupid question at all. I think everyone evaluates it differently... I don't know if you're D or C or both, but I'd say when things are progressing normally - no D, no C- for a week or two, you're pretty stable. Remember, stable is a relative thing and sometimes fleeting. I was stable for a few weeks and feeling great, but I'm a little off the mark right now 'cause I'm exhausted. I'm still eating on the diet and haven't resorted to What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything, so I still consider myself pretty stable. Again, it's what YOU think about your situation. I think my system will almost always been in a state of flux (at least for a while), so a little up and and a little down isn't bad. When I'm in the bathroom 5-15 times a day, though--- that's not stable.

Hope that helped?

Yes! It seems my boyfriend was killing the yeast by not using the correct water temperature. He found a thermometer (that he used to use in a science lab!) and he now checks to ensure he is using the correct temperature. He had one other setback when his third loaf of bread only partially rose, but then he discovered he used 1 1/2 tablespoons of salt instead of 1 1/2 teaspoons. Time for him to get some bifocals, I think!

Thank you for asking.

Thanks Jen,
I am actually IBS-C and haven't gone in about 4 days..however that is pretty normal for me. I did use the heating pad last night and it did seem to work pretty well for the time being. I think it was Bev that suggested I take some benedryl to help me sleep, I did that last night and I did sleep a little better! However, now that I am home from work I am a mess...I am a teacher for behavioral autistic kids so it can be very stressfull at times, today happened to be one of those days! So I am in the process of making some tea, heating up my heating pad and relaxing!

I will give it a week or so i guess, hopefully I will become stable soon! It is very frustrating!

Hi Laura,
I did sleep a little better last night...I was just telling Jen about it! I did take the benedryl and it did seem to help, I wasn't up every hour on maybe every other or so. My back was feeling better after the heating pad however, after my day at work, it I am a mess...my back is killing me...I teach behavioral autistic kids and it can be very stressful at times! But I am going to make some tea, heat up my heating pad and relax! I am hopeing this will end soon!

Hi, Christine!
Glad to hear the heating pad and Benadryl helped. Sorry to hear about your stressful day at work, but bless you for working with those special kids! Anyone in that type of job is an absolute angel in my book. Kudos to you!

And yes, give it a week or two. And don't give up five minutes before the miracle!!
