Hey Girlfriend!

Did I read somewhere in here yesterday or the other day that you avoid all sugar "like the plague"? Is that true? Was it you, or someone else? Did I dream it?

I'm thinking of putting a lot of my weight gain blame on sugar. (What else could it be?!?) I have a terrible sweet tooth, and, while I follow the program religiously, I do consume a lot of sugar. Heather's suggestion to me (because of my weight issue and really REALLY wanting to lose) was to try cutting out the sugar due to their empty calories.

Did you find that you were able to control your weight when you cut out sugar? Did your weight drop significantly? I'm doing everything else right -- all the usual weight loss stuff -- except the sugar thing.

Well, I still have my Rice Crispie Treats! Let's get that out in the open right now!

As for the rest of the sweets world, yeah, I pretty much avoid them. And I recently gave up bread ('cause of the blasted gluten). Between the two, I'm hoping that I will lose weight. I have about 10 - 15 pounds to go. All I know is this: if I allow myself sweets (and gluten) I am hungry or at least craving food ALL OF THE TIME! Now, I feel like I'm eating reasonably. I tend to be a rule-bender, so it's easiest for me to just ban sweets... at least 'til I get out of the habit of reaching for them. I really think that the gluten was responsible for a real, physical hunger but the sweets-- that's mostly in my head (and a result of the whole blood sugar rollercoaster. Energy dips --> reach for candy --> energy soars --> energy CRASHES! --> reach for candy....)

I really really really advise anyone who wants to lose weight (and is IBS stable!) to try the Weight Watchers program. A lot of people like the meetings (I'm ambivilent) and like being accountable to someone for having lost/gained in a week. I like the Points- they're easy to count and SENSIBLE. You can eat what you want, so being on this diet or any other medical diet isn't a problem. You would be SHOCKED to learn what's adding to your weight once you total the Points. (I just figured out that my beloved morning smoothie is, like, 10 or so Points. Yikes. My range is 20-25 for the day, and in 4 pounds will drop to 15-20! Oy, oy, oy!)

By the way, I've been strict with the sweets and gluten for about 2 weeks (give or take) and today I WOKE UP SKINNY! Not literally, of course, but I can tell stuff is shifting around. Caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror while getting dressed and thought "Wow! You actually look kinda cute in your underpants!" This is the first time I've ever thought that. And then I slipped into my pants and they were justthismuch looser- with no extra bits hanging over the waistband! YIPEEE!!!!

I happen to think you're both pretty sweet.

Jen, congrats on feeling better about yoursef! How exciting! I agree that Weight Watchers is a great program. My mom did a very similar program called Diet Workshop when I was younger, and she loved how it made her feel about herself too. I don't know how people can get all into these stupid low carb crazes when a low fat diet is so simple and healthy and has such great effects!

Exactly! That's what I liked about WW. It's sensible.

I don't care for the meetings much either... they're a little too group therapy for me.

And it's interesting how the "plan" has changed... nobody's ever supposed to eat less than 20 points a day now.

That's joyful news! I've gotta get back in and see this Flex Points deal. I'm amazed at that change, 'cause I just joined WW last year....

As for the groups, I know a lot of people get a lot out of it, but I didn't, really. It's nice for tips and such, though. My best friends LOVES the meetings and really gets bummed if she can't go. I totally appreciate that, but I'm different. I do like the accountability of the weigh-in, though...

Yeah, my sister swears by WW too. I think she's lost like 50 pounds! She's back to the size she was in college! (and she's 48 now with a 16 yr old daughter)

Your emails are so funny and very enjoyable to read!

I don't have a problem with weight but I do have a problem with eating too much candy which greatly affects my teeth! I am the kind of person that needs to brush their teeth immediately after eating anything or cavities start up. It's just not convenient to be brushing all the time when I'm snacking all the time. It's easy for me to reach for something sweet or hard candy or even Altoids! And I really need to give that up or spend time in the bathroom - not on the toilet but brushing away!

What's that about not less than 20 points a day (please say it's true!!!!! )!

I'm doing the points diet without going to meetings cos 1) they are so not my kinda thing and 2) with my job I'd never make it regularly. Lost 3 pounds last week! Yay! I might actually fit into my wedding dress!
