Ok, here's my question. I am going to hang out with some friends I haven't seen in awhile, tomorrow. We are going out to a bar and I would really like to drink. (I have been reeeeeeeally good up to this point, didn't even touch alcohol during my week in Mexico!) But I plan to have at least a couple of beers. I know to drink lots of water, but the next morning I usually get D pretty bad. If I take Immodium before I go to sleep will this help? I will be traveling the next day so I need to find something that will help! Thanks

Sorry, I don't have much advice for you. I haven't had a single drinks in months and months, and before that it was just a tiny glass of wine with dinner. I just want to say.... be careful! Even before IBS beer bothered me, it's so heavy and hard to tolerate. And in the evening, without a soluble fiber meal... ooh, you're making me crazy. Are you sure it's worth the way it might make you feel?? If they're real friends they'll understand if you just drink water.

Anyway I can talk you out of it?

Guess not.

Well, I can empathize, here. I would, however, advise against beer. And I would advise against more than 2. At least it's been my experience that one or two glasses of wine over a night or one or two cosmos over a night is ok. That is, it's ok if you load up on your soluble fiber first! Again, that's been my experience. But as we know, we're all totally different! And I only do this if I've been really well leading up to the night out.

I've always gotten bloaty and sick from beer (too bad, 'cause I love it!). If you don't generally get that, maybe it will be ok for you? But I stay far away, now.

I do loves me some cosmopolitans, though! (And the bonus is, since I hardly drink, I've got a low tolerance, so 2 drinks makes me a happy girl!)

Good luck and be careful!

I tried doing the exact same thing the other week. Didn't work I recommend not taking the Immodium, it was worse than being hung over cause my stomach didn't like having the alcohol in it, yet I was backed up cause of the Immodium.

It's too bad you're travelling the next day, if not I'd say just enjoy yourself and call the next morning a write off. But travelling would make things very difficult. I know it's tough to go out when eveyrbody is having a few drinks and you still feel stone sober, but if I were in your position I wouldn't risk it. (but that's just me)

As someone said, load up on safe food first. Be careful with the beer not only are you having alcolhol, but it is carbonated as well. If you must indulge, maybe you would do better with wine or mixed drinks made without carbonation. Keep up your water intake WHILE you are drinking as well, that helps also with the inevitable hangover the next morning!

I would try avoiding the carbonated drinks...although that can be difficult. My favorite drink used to be rye and coke But now I've found that I'm okay to have a few drinks when I go out with my friends but I stick to vodka and water with a dash of lime. Sounds disgusting but when you add the lime (or lemon) you can hardly taste the vodka. The water helps keep you hydrated and prevents a morning hang over....I would also suggest lots of soluble fibre before your big night out!! Try eating lots of soluble fibre foods all day long and then the alcohol might not effect you as much. Whatever you do...you're taking a chance....you just have to decide if it's worth chancing or if you'd rather play it safe.
Good luck!!

.. in debating whether to drink or not this weekend. My guys are taking me out of town for my birthday with the rest of our friends for some 4-wheeling - over 20-30 people are expected to be camping with us. Everyone knows I don't drink and I'm even bringing all my alcohol that I've had in my cabinets that I haven't been able to touch since IBS. And we're hoping to get the campsite right next to the bathrooms!

However, I am dying for one glass of wine or something! We're leaving tonight and doing our grocery shopping on our way out, so I'm going to see if maybe they have those little miniture bottles of wine that I can take. I handled one glass of wine a night okay on my cruise last August so hopefully I'll be fine this weekend.

(And before anyone starts preaching - yes, I will make sure I eat tons of soluble fiber first.)

So maybe look for something a little lighter and low in alcohol? Hope this helps you and let us know how you did if you do decide to try it!

Thanks for the advice everyone, I know I'm taking a risk - we'll see. The thing about hard liquor is that it used to make my stomach ache before I had the IBS. So that is when I switched to beer. It's much lighter - but I think it is the carbonation now that kills me.

Ok.. so if I have ONE drink - can anyone suggest a good one that won't do a lot of damage?

By the way - good luck with the camping!!

whiskey sour is what I drink when I just gotta have one. Its just whiskey and sour mix, its a little sweet and no carbonation. I still think wine is safer! Good luck and have fun, try not to spoil the night by worring about the morning!

I went on a cruise in Jan. and had a least 1 drink every day. Usually the drink of the day, which was a fruity one with lots of ice. Had no problems, even with the cheating I did on food. By the last night I was getting tired of the fruity drinks when everyone else was drinking cosmos or wine, so I tried an apricot sour and loved it. I drank slow, ate lots of soluble fiber, avoided carbination. I used to love beer and thought if I would just drink one of those slow it would last a long time (more volume), but got to the point where I would start to feel bloated after a few sips and couldn't even finish one. I would get teased all the time for never finishing a drink. Then I tried wine because my husband drinks it all the time and when we'd be eating out wanted to drink something with everyone else, but that bothered me too. I can't believe the hard stuff gives me less problems. One thing I do sometimes is order the drink made with 1/2 the alcohol. One time while sitting and talking with other drinkers in a bar, just to have something, I ordered a selzer water with lemon and stirred the heck out of it to get out some of the fizz. It was really refreshing (and cheap) and I felt like I was drinking. Fortunatley I can handle orange juice (with rum) and tomato juice (bloody mary) if I just have one.
Good luck and have fun.
