Im 21 and have been told I have IBS since I was about 16. For about a year I had no symptoms at all but then in June of 2003 I got really sick and they have been bad ever since. I lost about 10 pounds (which I couldnt afford to lose in the first place) and I CANNOT gain it back. I was just at the doctor last week and he told me to drink ensure plus. It is FULL of vitamins and I have read that they can be a problem for IBS. Has anyone else out there ever tried it? Please help me out - I'll take any advice I can get - Im desperate!! Thank you!

I've used it in the past when really ill. At first I could drink it with no problem and later on couldn't, didn't know why Oh, just looked on this site and see it's loaded with fat, that must have been the problem - http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=11928&catid=49472&aid=335972&aparam=ensure_plus_complete_bala

If you need something to eat when you are really bad Heather has some good tips in her book and maybe on line recipies that someone else can direct you to as I'm new here myself. Best of luck. I think you will find help here, probably as good if not better than your doctor.

So sorry you're having a problem with weight gain. My problem is just the opposite! So.... maybe I can share with you something I enjoy that's probably part of the reason I can't lose!

My doctor just lost 40 pounds, so he thinks EVERYONE should be able to lose 40 pounds! GRRRRRR. Anywho.... he keeps telling me, "calories in, calories out." That works for weight gain and weight loss. If I take in more calories than I expend, I'm going to gain weight. If you take in less calories than you expend, you're going to lose weight. Makes sense, right?

Okay, bear with me here ...

Do you like chocolate? There are a lot of great recipes here -- well, actually in the other board, the recipe board -- and they're low in fat, but some of them are high in CALORIES. Take, for example, a recipe I posted the other day -- Chocolate Banana Frostie. Now, that recipe has only 8% fat, which is incredible for a yummy chocolate dessert. However, it's got a lot of calories -- over 350. So if you took IN those 350+ calories, but expended only -- oh, say 100 of them, you're got a 200 calorie weight gain!

Now if I can just find a way to RESIST that frostie! .....

Sorry, I can't help you with Ensure. I've never had it (and obviously don't need it!).

Glad to have you on board, Abby!

Hi,

I also have the keeping on weight problem and when the IBS-D is real bad I was resorting to The Ensures as well per advice od doctor. But they do not sit well with me either. The ones I was drinking had 6 grams of fat (the high protein ones) so I did not think that that was the problem but the ingredients list Sodium Caseinates pretty high up in the ingredient list which I think maeans their are alot of those in there. My thought was, and maybe others on the board could verify, that this was a milk/dairy product and that was what was giving me the trouble.

I had much better luck stabilizing myself using Heather's stabilizing diet for a few days and then adding in other real foods as I got better.

Hope this helps.

I'm new on the boards too, and I'm 21, and I've had IBS for about 3 and a half years, and I also have a problem gaining weight. My best friend and my boyfriend are constantly bugging me about eating. Do you like honey? When I was in Turkey visiting my boyfriend, the only thing I could eat of the traditional Turkish breakfast was the bread and honey. I've found myself still eating bread and honey sometimes since I've been back. Good luck and I hope it helps to know you're not the only one going through this!

Hi!!
welcome aboard I haven't been here very long myself but you will find you get a lot of good advice. I have tried the ensure drink before and at least for me I could not get it past my lips.I also lost about 7 lbs. in which I could not have afforded. I only weighed 98 lbs. to begin with then lost 7 lbs. I have managed to gain 4 lbs. back within the past few weeks. I eat a lot of tortillas (fat free, no lard) and shredded hashbrowns wraps. I eat alot of rice, and pasta and french bread. I think you'll find alot of us eat tons of rice, potato, and pasta. Be careful about what you put on these however. It's better to start off plain then see what you can add. Hope this helps some. Good Luck

Welcome to the boards!

I have the opposite problem, too. I lost 40 pounds last year from IBS (believe it or not!), but I had them to lose, so I wasn't complaining too too much.

However, I'm now walking the fine line of trying to get enough nutrients into my system. And I'm trying to regulate my energy levels. I personally think those are linked in my case.

ANYWAY... have you looked into protein powders? I know weightlifters and muscley people take those. I just started mixing some into a smoothie in the morning and it's really helped my energy level. Maybe that would help you with weight gain? I'm not sure how that works...?

Smoothies are a great way to get some extra food in-- they're so tasty! And if you add honey, cocoa, and other things like that, then you will get some extra calories without adding too much fat.

From what Heather said in her books, a lot of people find that their weight evens off to the right place when they've been on this diet for some time and have been eating regularly.... (meaning: people who need to gain, do, and people who need to lose, do) I know you're new to the boards.... how long have you been following her diet? I wonder if you'll notice more improvement as time goes on a little?

Make sure you're adding to your diet and not just sticking to the super safe breads and potatoes! They're safe but not enough nutrients! In Weight Watchers (before I got sick), they had a challenge: add one new (meaning "different from the usual) meal to your diet plan a week. It was good for those who aren't very adventurous in the kitchen-- one meal isn't THAT much to experiment. And it ensures variety. You could try to issue yourself that challenge and make sure you're getting extra calories in those meals!? Just a thought.

Good luck!

I agree with the calories in and calories out. Like you I'm also battling gaining weight. I'm upping my calorie count and I have seen improvement. There is a product called Balance, it's got all the safe ingredients we can have. However it does have 3g of fat and the dietery fiber is 3g. So I haven't tried it but it is diary free and made of soy. I too chicken because of the dietary fiber count. I'm IBS D and I don't do well with high fiber diet. You could also try rice protien powder, it's a alternative to whey or soy powders which will help with weight gain. I been eating the pancake recipe from the board and waffles stuff like that can give you a little weight on too. Smoothies can help too.
Don't skip any meals and always snack throughout the day.
Probiotics can help you regain good flora, and help you with weight also, meaning you won;t gain weight from it but you'll feel generally better and you'll eat. To answer you question don't do the ensure and boost they have bad stuff in there to aggravate the symptoms, I tried them too, when I was sick and boy the bathroom liked me If you haven't started a blance diet using Heather's or one that works for you, consider it. Get yourself balanced out again, it will get better. Take care.

Hi and welcome. I am new as well and saw your problem about the weight loss. I am very thin and can't afford to lose weight and have never been able to gain weight. Since I read Heather's book and adjusted my diet according to her tips and recipes, I have gained 5 pounds and feel more comfortable with my body weight.

Don't drink the ensure. IT may be lactose free, but I think it has casein or whey which can only make things worse. Eat frequent meals during the day (not necessarily large meals). Make sure you have soluble fiber at each meal. The best way to gain weight is to get yourself stable. Don't be tempted to eat fried foods,e tc. or you'll just end up sick again.
Try soy milks (I LOVE Silk brand chocolate), instead of the ensure. Also, make sure you're eating a balanced meal, and carefully incorporating your fruits and veggies.

I'm in a bit of the same boat as you. I lost about 15 lbs when I first started getting sick, and didn't have the weight to lose to begin with. I also found I felt really tired. Since I've been eating better I have gained back a bit of weight (not all of it), but feel way better. I think that's the important thing. Worry more about feeling better than what the scale says.

Hansolo - I know Whey is bad, but Is Casein bad also? I've been eating some Soy cheese that has it in it. But it souds like maybe I should be careful.

Thanks....I am a very slim girl. I'm 5'8 and until recently have never weighed more than 125lbs. I'm at 130 right now and feel alot more comfortable with it.
