I don't know if this has been asked before but I was curious how everyone's IBS started. Like if there is a common link among all of us. Like after an illness, during a very stressfull time in your life, after a surgery, menopause related, etc.

I had occasional problems off and on in mid 30's with a few foods, then had an ovary removed, then another female operation, then perimenopause, then they was going through an extremely stressful time at work with a few downsizings and losing jobs, then the IBS really took over right in the middle of the stress stuff. Then another operation to remove adhesions from prior surgeries as hopefully a cure, then a hysterectomy and just continuing IBS. I'm retired now for 5 yrs and no stress so just don't see why this is staying with me. I'm thinking that all those times when I could hardly eat anything I'm not producing enough digestive enzymes anymore but doctors just roll their eyes.

hI; all I know is that some years ago I had food allergies and I think milk intolerance. Over time I had so many problems with food that my drs. realiazed it must be ibs. Yes, I had tests done to make sure of it. I also had an ulcer priot to food allergies and wanted to make sure it hadn't come back. I asked to have the scope done. IT was done and there was nothing else there but VERY BAD IBS. I mean, it felt like I had a hole in mystomsch and it took 2-3 days to feel better bsck then. I finally went on paxil and after a few weeks started feeling a lot better. Funny thing, though, my dr. didn't ot couldn't give me a dietary guidelne to follow. I always had this feeling that maybe Ia should avoid ceetain foods but didn't know which ones to avoid. I tried elimination tests a couple of times bit got so far and ran into trouble. THANK GOD FOR HEATHER'S IBS WEBSITE. IT WAS A REAL LIFE SAVER!

I think my IBS came on me slowly. First it was pork that started disagreeing with me (1967), so I cut it out of my diet. Then it was red meat (circa 1977). I developed what I thought was a mental problem around 1980 when I freaked out every day after work before getting on the commuter bus, knowing I was stuck and couldn't get off the bus until the first stop, 2 hours away! Actually, it was that experience that I have since blamed for my IBS -- that and the added stress of the high-power job. At the time, though, I did not realize I had IBS; I thought I had a mental problem.

Whenever I ate large meals, I got sick. I blamed the food. Whenever I had fatty foods, I got sick. Again, I blamed the potato chips. It never registered with me that I might have to blame my colon.

I knew nothing about IBS. It was just 4 years ago that a fellow employee said to me, "I think you have IBS." I looked it up in the medical dictionary because I'd never heard of it except for brief notations in medical summaries that I used to transcribe and wondered about. I saw the doctor and asked for a referral to a GI. The GI was a jerk, very condescending, stuck on himself -- I hated him and refused to return. I decided I wasn't going to have IBS -- whatever it was -- and ignored it. When we sold our home in California and moved up here 3 years ago, I could no longer ignore it. I found a new doctor up here who said he thought I did indeed have IBS. His question to me was: "You're a perfectionist, aren't you?" Interesting -- because that's what my doctor in California asked me before he too told me he thought I had IBS. The answer to both was an undeniable YES. He sent me to a GI who finally gave me a colonoscopy and confirmed his diagnosis. He too was a jerk because he discovered divertuculum -- only a few -- and suggested surgery, which I refused. I did not need it; my divertulosis wasn't serious enough -- so he told me to get my meds from my primary doctor and showed me the door.

While I've had two surgeries in my life, I can't attribute the IBS to either, although the first one (in 1982) is suspect. Neither can I attribute my IBS to family stressors (although one particular serious incident in 1997 is suspect).

When finally accepted my diagnosis, I blamed my IBS on stress -- after all, I was eating healthy foods, what else could have caused it? -- so I figured the answer was to get rid of all the stress in my life. I went from a high-powered job in San Francisco to a far less-paying position in my home town, 30 miles north of SF, assuming the stress of the job and the commute were to blame. It didn't work; the IBS got worse. I quit that job and took an even less stressful job (and a less meaningful, less paying job) -- but still the IBS continued. So I cut my hours down, went from full-time to part-time. It didn't work either. Finally, I quit working all together, sold my beautiful home in California and moved up here on the Canadian border to "chill out." No stress anymore, right? WRONG!

What I didn't realize was that I was in a "catch-22." The stress I was experiencing was because of the IBS! I worried about the inevitable attack, and the worry actually brought ON the attack! THAT's the stress I'm still trying to get rid of -- and I'm doing a good job of it, thanks to Michael and this incredible Board.

Okay, I think I'm rambling now. Don't you hate it when that happens?

My IBS started from having an eating disorder. I noticed it when I decided to recover and start eating normal...I figured some discomfort/bloating/pain was a normal reaction to eating more at first, but it was really bothering me and didn't seem to be getting better at all. So finally after about a year I went to a doctor and go diagnosed with IBS.

I believe though not certain that my IBS got started after my eating disorder (anorexia) as well. ONce I started eating regularly again all the symptoms started and I went through life not knowing what was wrong for about 3 years. Once I got Heather's first book and started to adjust my diet my IBS has now gotten in control. I think the eating disorder had a big part on starting the IBS...because it was a shock to my system to eat again.

Mine came on slowly as well. I started running a support group for homeschoolers. That went well for a couple years -- but added a lot of stress. Then we left our church -- the group started having trouble -- and it all sort of built up. By the end of the last year -- I was in terrible pain nearly every day. I went to the doctor and they tested me for gall bladder, celiac and all that. When they suggested that I change my diet -- it really helped. I got Heather's book and it has been a lifesaver. Since mine came on during a stressful time -- and only a couple years ago -- I thought maybe it would go away. No luck.

I think mine started from stress. I was married the first time in 1982 when I was only 21 and very naive. He turned out to be extremely controlling and verbally abusive, always yelling at me, making me cry and generally just so miserable that at times I actually did not want to live anymore. To top that off, his elderly parents lived with us and I took care of them as well.

He tried to alienate me from my family because he wanted all of my attention all the time. I went to work with him, ate lunch with him and went home with him. No freedom. I had a son and went back to work when he was 5 weeks old due to money trouble he had caused (he was a chronic spender).

By about 1986 I was so sick I went to a doctor because I had so much trouble eating and keeping it in. His diagnosis (wrong at the time!) was gallstones (and no, I do not have them and never did). He put me on the gallbladder diet and I lost 100 lbs and have kept it off ever since.

My husband at that time then lost his job, didn't try to get another one and was out of work for 3 years while I worked regular shift and overtime (16 hours a day) trying to make ends meet. By that time I was married for 11 1/2 years.

Needless to say, I finally left him (that was 11 years ago) but the damage was already done.

I am presently remarried to a wonderful man who is really easy going and very good to me. But I get nervous over almost everything even though I try not to. I try to keep my life as simple as possible but it does not always work out that way. Since my ex and I share a son, he still calls and upsets me with yelling and threats.

I have a good job but at times the stress is very high. Over the last year it's been nothing but stress, between both my ex-husband and my new husband's ex-wife and children and work. I finally had to go back to the doctor because I've hardly been able to tolerate most foods, but I'm working on it day by day.

If people would only remember to treat you like they would like to be treated the world would be much nicer.

I was 17 when I started to have some bloating. It wasn't very serious at first. I would only have it when I had a lot of meat or a really heavy dinner. I went to the doc a couple of times but they really didn't think it was a big deal at all.

In November I went to vist my Fiance' for Thanksgiving. I had a horible virus. I had diarrhea like ever 5 min the entire night and then the next morning. SICK! I was staying at his parents house and was pretty embarresed but almost too sick to care. lol It's a wonder he still married me!

Anyways, after that virus I was never the same. My Ibs (which I didn't know that it was called that at the time) started to get worse and worse. The next spring I got married and moved to a different state. Just trying to cope with starting a new life really made my ibs explode. I was constipated all the time. My stomach was bloated every day and night hardly ever going down. I went to the doctor for a colonoscopy and a CAT. I was diagnosed with IBS soon after. So here I am today!

I must say the best thing about it all was how supportive and awesome my hubby was. We had been married for only three month and here he is witha huge hospital bill and a very sick and agitated wife and he was sucha gem through it all. What can I say...The Lord provided me with an unbelievable man! hehe

What a story, Girlfriend!

Honey, you said, "If people would only remember to treat you like they would like to be treated the world would be much nicer." It reminded me of something my old boss (a very powerful SF attorney) wrote in a note to me 25 years ago -- I kept that note. This is what he said:

"Bev, it is a mistake to go through life expecting the rest of the world to be as nice as you are."

Oh, Barbara. It's so good for me to hear your story and to hear that you are in a happy relationship right now. My IBS started because of a verbally abusive relationship, too. Once I was geographically separated (by 2 continents and an ocean), my IBS began. I guess sort of my body's response to all of the stress I experienced (and denied). He still bothers me every now and again and that guarantees a horrible attack and much emotional stress. It hasn't been quite 2 years since it ended, so it's really encouraging for me to hear that there is hope for a fulfilling relationship after all that...and maybe my IBS will go away (I'm still hoping )

You (and Bev) reminded me of the German philospher Immanuel Kant's categorical imperative:
"Act in such a way that the maxim of your will [could] always hold at the same time as a principle laying down universal law"

Don't you just wish that would hold true?!? That would get rid of so much of the sorrow and pain in this world....

My IBS is due to a flu virus that really hit me for 2 1/2 months, which I believe the stress of what was wrong with me and the stress of needing to get well and not eating, caused the IBS to set in. My family of females have IBs syptoms that range from C'S and D's. I started out severe D and now mostly C or what I call pretty normal. I love This Board and Heather's diet regimen I follow it and can pretty much know what will bring on a attack. I don't use fiber supplements at all right now the diet helps me stay in control of that issue. I do love my chamomile tea and use quite frequently. You know come to think of it I have always had a little IBS all my life, but the flu wirus really unleashed it fully, but now I know what to do and I'm not so worried, there is hope and believing in yourself can make a world of difference. Thanks for sharing your story, together we all make a difference in each others lives.

For the past few years, I found that more and more foods would bother me. Dairy was a give away, but lots of other foods bothered me as well. Things got worse when I got promoted to a position that had me on call 24/7. The pager would go off at odd hours of the morning and my body would never know when to sleep or get up. That stress took a toll on my body and made things much worse.

I am 40 years old now, but mine actually started when I was 22. It began when I started my first high school teaching job and was definitely stress related. I started having lots of stress and anxiety because I had really difficult students on top of trying to learn a new job. I started having bouts with D almost everyday after lunch and then certain foods started bringing on the episodes like burgers, gravy, anything fatty or greasy. The doctor gave me Librax back then because it controlled the D, but also has a mild sedative to calm the stress. It worked, but I had to take it for a couple of years before it finally let up enough to go off of it. However, now I am back to the same issue. I started a new job in the library, and although I love it, it was still stressful just learning a new job. That was enough to kick it back into gear again. So here I am starting back at square one and back on my medication. I have just learned that I have a very limited diet. Hope this is helpful. My doctor also said there is a link to endometriosis and IBS, and I have been diagnosed with that as well, so who knows. Mine seems to be more stress related.

I have no idea how or why mine started, I just remember when I was about 13 at night when I would say my prayers and I'd ask God not to let me have Diarrhea or a diarrhea stomach ache, that's been a few years ago, but there was no diagnosis back than, and it kills me to think that I prayed for that at 13 and now I'm 30something and still have it......... I had been doing great inthe past few months, but this last two weeks has been killer and I don't know why, I have been following my same diet, it gets soooooo frustrating, but I'll get through it, heck after 20+ years of it, you'd think it'd be getting better, actually my GI Dr. told me as you get older it gets better.................I'm waiting.

My IBS was specifically related to being infected by shrimp. Travelers' Diarrhea was the start of my IBS. That episode was 14 years ago. My husband and I were both treated with antiparasitic medications. My husbands infection resolved with no further episodes. However I have had IBS every since. I am new to Eating for IBS. So far it has been improving. For me it is not stress related.

Mine started 14 years ago, when my husband came home one day from work and said "we are moving, but I don't know when or where to". the plant that he was working at was closing. I started having panic attacks and got very sick. Thought I was losing my mind. All the anxiety from the idea of uprooting started the IBS. I never knew what to eat, until 3 years ago, when I discovered Heather's book, and started eating her diet. It has made a HUGE difference in my life. I feel so much better, and am stable about 90% of the time, if I stick to it, which I almost always do, as I never want another attack again!! It is just not worth it to me. The hypnotherapy tapes helps alot with the anxiety. I don't take any supplements, but I eat oatmeal every a.m., which I find has helped me start the day of right, and I feel better.

My IBS began when I was around 9 or 10 years old. I would get chronic D stomach aches and spend hours every day in the washroom. I had tests done to try and figure out what it was and the doctors where unable to determine what was causing it. Then for about 9 years I had no symptoms...I would get a D stomach ache every once in a while (maybe once every 5 or 6 months) but on a day to day basis I was fine. Eventually the symptoms slowly started to reappear. First with chronic constipation and then in the past year it's come back with a venegence and I have a combination of both C and D. I go a week with C and a sore stomach everyday and then I have one really bad day of D. I've been following Heather's diet for the past 3 weeks and have seen some improvement although in the past week I have had 2 D days. But I'm working on it and I'm trying not to get discouraged and give up.

Hi gang,
My IBS started about 10 years ago, when I went through a very stressful period (moved far away from home at 19 with a boy with whom I am still madly in love, but who was also 19 and therefore a little difficult). University, relationships and families are so hard for perfectionists like me, so I know that for me the IBS is totally stress related. Right now I'm getting through my first year of grad school, and the first few months were hell on my IBS (new city, very competitive program, riding the subway every morning). When I have bad days I get depressed, thinking that this #!*@% IBS will keep me from doing all the things I want to do in my life. Grr! But thanks to Heather and the rest of you, things are looking up!
And that's my story!

As far as I know, I've had IBS-C all my life. The IBS-D has come and gone over time.

Both my mom and her mom have IBS too. Ah, that's it: I don't have IBS, I have a family tradition!

I can totally relate...just the stress I cause myself from worrying about an attack coming on when I'm not close to a washroom will cause an attack. Yesterday is a perfect example...I started worrrying about getting an attack at school and then I started to get one...but once I calmed down it started to subside and I sat through the class without an attack!!

That's it, Girlfriend! That's exactly what it's all about -- the power of the mind to control the body, the WHOLE body. When you move your arms or legs, what moves it? When you move your bowels, what moves it?

You're on the right track, Girlfriend! Good for you.
