I just wanted to let everyone know that I now know from experience how dangerous MSG can be to IBSers. My mom made chicken soup on Sunday night. She was going to use the chicken broth she'd been using for years, but I recently noticed that it contained MSG, so I asked her to use my organic broth instead and she kindly obliged. I had it for dinner that night and felt fabulous. Then last night she wanted to add some more broth so there would enough leftovers for the whole family. She had an opened can of her broth in the fridge and asked if I thought it would be okay if she used it, and stupidly I said sure, go ahead. Then last night about an hour after dinner, boom, I got the first attack I've had in months. Luckily I headed it off with Pepto and Bentyl, so it never got to full-fledged D, but I felt like garbage and still do today.

To make a long story short, the only thing I can possibly think of that was different was the MSG in the chicken broth. So if you've been putting off buying organic broth, please learn from my experience and do it! I will never underestimate the dangers of MSG again.

Wow. That's very interesting, Kree. That was a good test.

MSG apparently doesn't bother me, because it's in the new frozen Gorton's grilled salmon filets that I've just fallen in love with, and I've had no problems (so far)....

Thanks for the "heads up!"

Bev

That's good that it doesn't bother you, Bev. I had never noticed it to either, but I guess I'm more sensative than I had realized. Maybe there's less of it in your salmon filets... who knows.

I know all too well about MSG affecting IBS. I avoid it like a plag!!!
Another interesting fact about MSG is my ADHD son's behavior gets out of control after eating MSG. It was out of my house before I knew how it affected my IBS.

Sorry you had an attack after months of attack free. Hope you are feeling better.

WOW, Barbara, WOW! Gee, now I don't know about that salmon. Hmm ..... maybe I'd better pass on them after all. They didn't bother me before, but maybe I was just lucky....??

Wow Barb, that's scary that it bothered your son's ADHD too! Why the heck do they feel the need to put junk like that in our food??

What's the full, scientific name for MSG? What sort of food products is this added to? The only time I've heard it referenced is in Chinese restaurants....

Thanks!

Monosodium Glutimate. I'm really surprised it's still added in our food. There was a big hullaballoo about it in the '70's -- and, frankly, I thought it had been banned!

Yeah, I heard that it's added to Chinese food. I was surprised to see that it's in the BRAND NEW just-on-the-market Gorton's frozen grilled salmon filets that I have fallen in love with. RATS!
