Hi everyone- in the course of one week I have been told my best friend at work has a cerebral aneurysm, my dad has terminal lung cancer, and my dog needs a biopsy because she is bleeding internally or losing red blood cells in some way. Needless to say, this has kicked up the IBS. If anyone has suggestions of ways to eat or things to do during crisis that has worked for them, I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks-Linda

Wow, Linda, what can I say to help you out here? You sure have a full plate! It makes a person wonder why someone gets so over-burdened as you are right now.
I've said this on the boards before, but I think it bears repeating. I don't honestly believe that God gives us more than we can handle. It may seem that way, but we're stronger than we think in times of crises. You can handle all this, I'm sure of it, or you wouldn't have been dealt it. It just makes you even stronger. I think you just take it one step at a time, dealing with one issue and then another. All these things will resolve themselves no matter how you handle them.
Give your best friend all the support you can while spending as much time with your dad as you can afford. I wish I had the opportunity to spend time with my dad before he died, but we had no warning and I never got to say good-bye. Have the biopsy done on your puppy dog, and be there for her too.
I have found that during times of crisis my mind is preoccupied with the situation and thus OFF my own problems; I've actually been surprised that my IBS didn't act up during the crisis but when the crisis was over. Think about your friend, your dad and your dog, don't think about your IBS; I'll bet you too will be surprised.
God bless.

I'm sorry so much tragedy has befallen you at this time. It sounds like you are a very empathetic person and you internalize the pain that is around you. I am like that too.
If you let it, tragedy can ruin your life/health. All I can say is that you need to be healthy for your dog, friend and father, so be sure to take care of yourself. If you are a person of prayer, that is always helpful: release the pain to God and direct healing love to those that are ill. Also, I believe in the power of gratitute and the importance of laughter.
I agree with Bev that God won't give you more than you can handle.
You are in my thoughts and prayers today,
Janet

Thanks so much for your prayers. I believe in their power as well, and also in the fact that God will give me the strength to get through this. I already lost my mom to cancer years ago so I know I will survive. You are right that I need to stay healthy to help those around me, and also that I internalize other's pain. Being compassionate is good, but can be hard as well. I actually began my IBS symptoms back when my mom got cancer, so I know I will need to be careful. Thanks again for the encouragement. linda

Linda, I'm sorry to hear about everything you've been going through lately! It's no wonder your IBS is acting up with all the stress you're under. If I were you do the What to Eat When You Can't Eat Anything diet for a while until your system calms down. I'll keep you in my prayers. Take care!

I am so sorry about what you are going through. It seems like when it rain - it pours.
I find getting up before my kids in the morning and spend time praying really helps me get through the day. A brisk walk also helps.
I'll keep you in my prayers.

Linda,
I want you to know that you'll be in my thoughts - I'm very touched. Please don't let these sad days get you too far down. It is enough to get anyone down, and it's perfectly normal for you to be sad and for it to affect you physically, but do your best to lighten the load. The news is beyond our controls, but what we decide to do about it is not. Don't skip meals, it will make your next meal excruciatingly painful! Eat at least some apple sauce, rice, rice cereal, etc. throughout your days. Don't forget to drink lots of water. Above all, it is important in times like these to be true to yourself and others you love. Be sure to keep people around you who are supportive, and to show them your gratitude. Show your afflicted loved ones that you do love them, and do what is in your power to help them, and don't forget that that includes you! And if you ever feel like you are alone through all this, know that you are not, 'cause you can fall back on yourself for strength, and of course, you have us. Talk to us whenever you want! Tell as much or as little as you need to. Hang in there! I'm hoping for the best in all four cases!

Dear Linda, I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry for what you are going through right now. I can barely stand to even try to put myself in your shoes. Everyone has given you good advice already and I can't add anything to that. I just wanted to let you know that I'll pray for you and keep you in my thoughts. Terri
