This is truly AWFUL. Lots and lots of match burning and candle lighting in our house. I am like this EVERY SINGLE NIGHT...like the 6 o'clock hour rolls around and my gut is like clockwork. Cramps, awful passing of gas, and I can't stand to be around myself. What do I do? All I do is drink strong fennel and peppermint tea, and I am so sick of both, I have been drinking it so much. Here is what I ate today:

Breakfast: fruit soy yogurt & 1/2 slice Heather's banana bread

Lunch: plain bagel with 2 tsp. hummus, applesauce cup

Snack: piece of Heather's banana bread, glass fat-free soymilk

Dinner: cup miso soup, 6 pc. salmon sushi nigiri, 1/2 cup sliced mango

Anything else I can do? I didn't take my acacia today to see if it made any difference, and it hasn't.

Jen

Are you used to eating soy products? If not, you have to build up to digesting it. You can use Beano as you're adjusting to it.

That's the only thing I can think of.

How long have you been on acacia? Have you increased your dose in the past few days? I did that last week and had horriable gas, gas pains. I was miserable!! I have stopped the acacia, it took a few days and then I was ok again. I think I will give acacia a try again in a few weeks and start out really slow and increase really slow!

Everything you ate sounds pretty safe, soy sometimes can produce gas. How long have you been like this?

I hope you feel better in a few days!! I had to go one the what to eat when you cant eat at all diet for a few days as well.

Good luck! OH and during that time the peppermint and fennel didn't really help either. Now they are working again!

I've eaten soy products for years, but not this many at one time. I had to cut out dairy entirely since it caused me a lot of pain, constipation, and bloating above all. So, now I am eating rice cheese, soy yogurt, and soy milk all at once.

Did the 6 o'clock gas start when you started taking the acacia or when you started increasing more soy in your diet? Or did you kinda do both at the same time?

I'm trying to think of something for you!

You could try using some rice products instead of all soy and see if that helps. I used to use all soy, but recently wondered if it was good to be giving my body that much of one substance and started drinking rice milk instead. I think sometimes it's good to give our bodies some variety!

Hi Jen,

If not taking the acacia made no difference, then it's not the acacia that's to blame. Have you tried a probiotic? I noticed a difference in my blowing after I started a course of Jarro, and it's been much better ever since (not to mention other great benefits).

I still blow, though. I'm beginning to think it's just part of having IBS, something that we're stuck with. Mine is also in the evenings, like yours -- never in the mornings. I wonder if our bodies are trying to digest our day's meals and it's just more difficult to do at night when we're starting to slow down?

After you blow, don't you feel a lot better? I mean, doesn't the pressure disappear? For me, it's a big relief. (Although I understand what you mean -- before I took the Jarro the blowing was so bad even I couldn't stand myself! In this little tiny 2-room condo, hubby really MUST love me!)

I'm going to try cutting down on my food intake even MORE (if that's possible), and seeing if that doesn't make a difference for me. I'm beginning to think that my body simply does not want food in any form whatsoever.....

Good luck,
Bev

Have you tried Gas X caplets over the counter, the ones you can just swallow they are little tiny green tablets that are easy to swallow, no side affects, they do have peppermint in them. I don't like the ones you have to chew, too much chalky taste. I have used them for years and they really help. I get the Gax X brand cause they are cheaper. I still use the peppermint tea. Also, soy doesn't agree with me all that well..........just a few suggestions

I am also a big fan of carrying around my own spray. It's so embarressing! You can't hold it all in all night and when you let it out, you pray no one is around to offend.

I go through my ups and downs where is can be such a problem some days and then I'll be fine for a week then another bad week. I just try to cope and avoid all the gas producing foods that bother me and taking Gas X when I'm away from home.

Does Gas-X REALLY work? I have wondered if I could try it...and there's no side effects?? So it's not bad to use it? How often should I use it?

And probiotics...where on earth would I find them, and even after reading about them, I wouldn't have the first clue what I needed.

Jen, do a search in here for Gas-X; seems to me we've discussed this at length. Yes, it DOES work, but I only use it after I've eaten a meal I know will cause me excess gas (more than I have on a regular basis) -- such as my beloved lentil soup or anything I make with turkey sausage.

Also, you can check out the Jarro here: web page Several of us take it -- and several take other kinds -- you can do a search for "probiotics" as well. There have been a lot of great posts about it; look for "long-term use of probiotics" and you'll find some terrific info on it.

I left you a post on the probiotics thing, and I wondered if you took the Jarrow EPS variety......I am VERY unschooled about these things, even though I've read posts on it...:)

Love ya!

PS: I don't know what your doctor is talking about. From your picture, I do not see that you have a "weight problem". If you DO happen to carry a few pounds, it is called AGING. I am dealing with it now, at age 30....and it's JUST STARTING for me.....AAAGH! I canNOT get used to it.

Hi, Jen!

I'm sorry; I didn't see your post. You know, sometimes when I come onto the boards the new posts don't highlight for me like they're supposed to. Other times, it works fine. But I've missed several posts that way.

Yes, I take Jarro and have for several months now. I like it; I've noticed a BIGGGG difference in -- uh -- uh -- well, when I go to the "loo," shall I say. This morning was incredible. Okay, I won't go into it. Suffice it to say I walked out of the bathroom with a big smile on my face.

I gotta go see if I can find your post ..... this has me bugged.....

Oh -- here it is. How did I miss this post???

Yes, it's the Jarro-Dophilus EPS that I take: web page

I love the picture they have on the box; it's a colon with little happy faces dancing all over. Sometimes, like this morning for instance, that's how I feel after I visit the loo.

Hi,
I sympathize with your gas issues, your household sounds a lot like ours! We have plenty of matches on hand for the same reason. When I read the menu you shared I thought, "man, I'd be farting up a storm!" For me its all the soy products! Soy milk, miso, soy yogurt and good lord, hummus!? All that fresh garlic in a base of beans! Soy is a bean product and I know if I go overboard with it I have terrible gas and bloating problems! I always take Beano even if I'm just having a small cup of soy milk. I have found that mixing soy milk with rice milk tastes really good and reduces the gas factor a little. Anyway, maybe if you go easy with the soy products and start taking Beano you'll find some relief. Good luck!

Hey there, Jen!

You ordered the Jarro? I don't think you will be disappointed. Do a search, and you'll find lots of info about it -- as a few people said, it can't hurt you, the worst would be that you wouldn't notice any difference at all.

Hon, did you send me another post that I missed again -- and a compliment at that!? I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm doing wrong to miss these, except I don't read all the posts unless I see my name on the subject line. And once I answer a particular thread, I don't read others' answers to that thread. In the future, if you have a post for me, please put my name in the subject line, and I'll be sure to look for it.

Also, I haven't been on the boards much lately. I'm really busy sewing for the new house right now; I've only got 5 more months before it's built, and I have a lot more drapes and a dining room rag rug to make -- at the rate I'm going I'm not going to be done in time.

Again, my apologies.

Jen,
I also experience gas from time to time. Watch the banana bread, I get it every time I eat it. Maybe only have ione slice and try some beano or other digestzyme during the days. I cut soymilk from my diet and my gas reduced significantly, switched to rice milk. I love fruit soy yogurt and have it everyday. For me apples any form give me gas.

I need to show this to my husband! He tells me I sound like a MAN! I tell him I have a medical condition but he seems to think I take a sick delight in it. (AHG! I can't help it nor can I keep going to the opposite side of the house to "air my issues") I am so scared that I will be in public and have it "slip" out. I am on zelnorm which helps my cramping but the gas still comes. I will take that over the cramp/bloat/pain attacks though. I use gas x pretty often. works for me. When thinking of how long I have had IBS I am certain it has been since 95. I had a horrible gas attack that went on for days...and I had JUST started dating this guy I really liked (not my poor husband!). I literally would walk away and have to go to another floor of his house. I was mortified. If you don't have IBS you just wouldn't understand!
