My main question is, if this is not too personal, do you, Heahter, take any RX IBS medication. If not, did you and can a person wean themselves off of it, by using your diet? I know I need to talk to my dcotor, but I recently changed prescription coverage and I found out they do not pay for the prescription I'm taking, only the generic, I got the generic and had a horrible reaction, my doctor wrote them a letter letting them know I had a reaction to the generic and they could have cared less. So my Rx is about $180.00 a month. I was taking 1 3x a day and since I have had great success with your diet in the past two months I have upped my fiber and am now taking my RX 2x a day. Will I ever been Rx free???? Any help or success stories of quitting RX meds would be welcomed. I love this board and I appreciate everyones input and advice. Thanks

Cheryl

I don't know what meds you're on, but I was taking Bentyl about 3x per day and since I started seriously following this diet I've dropped down to about 1-2 per WEEK! I now only take them when I feel I need them or before an especially large meal or social event. So this diet can definitely reduce your need for prescription meds!

Thanks Kree for responding, at least that gives me a little hope. How long have you been doing the diet? I've only been on it since November. Just getting an idea of about how long my body will adjust and decreasing the dose of my meds. Thanks!!

Cheryl, what kind of meds are they? Are they preventative, or do you take them just when you have an attack? I don't take my meds every day, but only when I'm in pain or have D. My doctor in California gave me a prescription for Donnatal for my severe attacks. That small little bottle expired 2 years ago -- yet I still have almost a full bottle. (I have a problem throwing things out, as you can see.)

My cramp pills are also used just for an on-coming attack, and I still have most of the free samples doc gave me of Nu-Lev.

Maybe I just don't have a lot of attacks, or maybe I'm ultra-conservative with meds. But I haven't really needed them since I've adhered to Heather's program (and cut out my beloved cuppa!)

$180 a month seems a bit steep. No, it seems a LOT steep! Ouch. But your doctor must have prescribed them for you because he felt you need them, right? Now, don't get me wrong -- I am NOT professing you stop your meds; in fact, just the opposite -- check with your doctor, find out if he means for you to take them as often as you are? Maybe he doesn't realize the fantastic eating program you're on. You say you have cut back the dosage; is your doctor aware of that? If not, he should be.

Hope some of this helps.

Bev

Bev, yes the are "supposed" to be preventative, I got yelled at when I was cutting back, before Heather's I had D attacks about 4-5 times a week. I would be good a couple weeks than bam, more D 4-5 times a week. I have had this for at least 20 years and have been on every anti-spasdomic there is, Librax is what I'm taking now and it is the only one, that stopped the attacks from being everyday always. Even taking it 3x a day I would gt those Gut wrentching awful pain, nausea, cramping, want to die attacks. Since Heather's diet, have only had about 5, since November of last year. So about two months ago I decided to cut back to 2x a day and have had 2 attacks, than I go back to 3 for a while. Yes, in the past I only had to pay my co-pay for them, now that it's no "formulary" they won't pay grrrrrr. Anytime I have tried any meds, I have been not yelled at, but sternly warned that they are to be taken as prescribed, not prn (as needed). Since I'm on this diet, maybe I'll go back to a different one, I know I used to take Donnatol also, the 12hr ones.....Just a thought, but I would love to hear anyone's input on their experiences with RX meds and stopping them or modifying them. Thanks a bunch

I was on bentyl for the IBS when I found heathers site. After not even a month of the diet I stopped taking the medication all together. I take nothing at all. If I start to feel bad I drink peppermint tea. There was another reason I stopped taking the meds, I have IBS-C and bentyl is a big time constipator. I just did not want to be on meds any longer, I started feeling so much better about myself eating such healthy foods knowing I was taking that pill was making me feel like I was just using it as a crutch. For to Heather. I never knew how much getting a handle on eating could change your life.
