Does it ever go away?

I had IBS come on only in the last two years (and only knew it was IBS for about 6 - 8 months). It was a VERY stressful year for me -- and I had other problems come on at the same time. Some of those have resolved themselves and I was wondering --- Is there any chance that the IBS will go away?

I had several tests - for all kinds of things -- but before I ended up getting the colonoscopy - the doc suggested I look into a couple IBS books -- and change my diet. Once I did - the symptoms were nearly gone. So -- I never had the colonoscopy because he said it wasn't necessary because none of the other problems would have had such improvement. I obviously was doing what I needed to do. However -- my husband and some friends have asked if this is something that I will ever be rid of --- and I thought I'd ask.

Hello

I'm new to these boards and I've had IBS for almost 30 years. In my experience, IBS does not "go away" but there are periods of time when I'm not in that much discomfort. I have noticed that my IBS flares up when I'm on vacations as my diet changes.

IBS never completely goes away, but I've heard that many people experience a lot of fluctuation in their symptoms. It can supposedly get a lot better for years at a time, only for the symptoms to come back again. Just another way that IBS is hard to explain!

The short answer is ... not that I know of. I can have phases of "remission" where I appear to be normal and then out of the blue I'll have a real rough time.
If you are able to control it by diet, you may get to a point where you're virtually symptom free, and have a fair amount of flexibility in your eating habits.

I've read on a website that there are people that have had IBS and then it just dissapeared eventually. There are other people that have had IBS then it went away, but then it returned.

Do you have a link to that website? nt. new

even if it's good stress. I know I was the worst on our last vacation. I didn't know I had IBS then though. Just trying to get from place to place on time and all that made me crazy. Plus the diet.... My hubby just won another trip from his company and the thought made me very nervous ....

I think that maybe it can, if you have a treatable cause such as
parasites, bacteria, celiac, food allergies, etc.. Even food intolerance identification can help as if you can pinpoint them and not eat them, you can get well. Remember IBS is a catchall term, everyone's cause could be different.

Thanks for responding. I am getting better at adapting -- but it's hardest when your friends want to go out... it's so hard to find safe things there now. I long for the day I can eat cheesy lasagne and garlic bread at olive garden again!

Even if I did find a reason for my IBS, I don't think I'd go back to eating like that. I will always no doubt have the tendency to swing over to being IBS. If I can control it by killing off some bacteria or something, I promise I will eat better.........lol.
