Just wondering. After several days of C, I wish I had D! But I know it is just as bad....but tell me your opinion.

Although I'm a "D" and have to constantly be on the lookout for public bathrooms, I think it would be worse to be a "C" because having it all build up inside of you and not being able to get it out would be horrendously painful.

I'd have to agree with Bev. It's horrible feeling like you have to go, but not being able to go. About a year ago, five to eigh hours in the bathroom with diarrhea used to relieve most of my symptoms. I almost miss those days. This C just isn't doing it for me, ya know? I know i need some fiber supplements and some insoluable with my soluable fiber, but that's not possible right now, so i just have to suffer uncomfortably and painfully.

I'm a C, and I think D is worse. I used to alternate a lot more before starting this diet, and never knowing when I was going to have to rush to a bathroom was unbearable. I admit that the C still interferes a lot with my social life, because a lot of nights I feel so bloated and gassy I don't feel like going out, but to me this is still better than being stuck in the bathroom feeling like I'm going to die.

It's funny, they say the grass is always greener on the other side, but so far we've all said just the opposite!! I was a psych major in college, this makes me want to do some kind of study! Lol.

Well there is ups and downs for me on both sides of the fence. I'm mostly D and I enjoy the days I'm C but to me the C is just normal because I don;t get pain with it, and I go every couple of days. To get the D again it would be unbearable for me. I have three kids and retail business and I'm not looking foward to those days again. Plus I lost sooo much weight from the D I'm scared I get really sick and end up in the hospital. On the upside I have faith. Keep a positive attitude and hope for the best.

You know - I am a D -- but since starting the diet - I have had a couple times where I swung over to C. I would prefer to be C --- it doesn't hurt as much --or for as long. When I have a full blown D attack I am cramping so bad - feeling all hot -- and stuck in the bathroom - sometimes for an hour or more.... and then the ache in my tummy can last for up to 4 days later. When I'm C (and it may be because I'm not truly a C) -- I just don't go for a couple days. I may get bloated and not feel very well -- but it doesn't have the intense pain or the total stop of all activity but bathroom visits like my D attacks.

D-type is horrible you never know when you will have a problem. I have had c-type sometimes, I say I would rather be c-type than d-type because you don't have to keep a look out for the bathroom or worry about getting home in time.
But on the other hand I think most people would like to have the opposite of what they have

Well, I was D for over 3 years everyday, and now I'm C. I think I was pretty lucky when I was D, because even though I had the many personal tortures of trying to build my life around how close I was to a bathroom; I didn't have the pain, bloating, gassiness, and almost continual discomfort that I have now. I used to tell my husband that I knew it was better than C, because I'd had that so bad as a child. Little did I know, I would return to this again!

Sommer, I, too, have money problems. My husband became disabled l and 1/2 years ago and it's been so rough. He's on disability now, but it's not enough to live on. That's why I don't have insurance and can't get good care yet. But, there's hope for people like you and me, too! Just don't give up! (As much as we'd like to sometimes!) I had a good day a couple of days ago, and thought I'd be okay, but here I am again; pain and discomfort. I hope things get better for you soon! You're not alone!!!

I am a D. My daughter is a C. She has a lot more pain than I do, but she doesn't spend her life needing to know where the nearest bathroom is. For a D person I think the fear of having an accident really adds to the stress, which of course, makes it worse! I have just ordered the kit and will be starting the diet this weekend. If it's successful for me then maybe I can get my daughter to do it also.

I am mostly D but occasionally am C....for me D is much worse because there is that constant anxiety that an attack might happen at the worst possible time. When I am C there is the pain and such, but not the anxiety.

I am mostly C, but have had D also on a few occasions....I really consider both equally bad. It's not fun being C for so long, feeling like "I HAVE to go but I CANT, why???", it's stressful not being able to poop. But with D, not fun either, having to stay in the house or near a bathroom.

Both cause much anxiety! Oh, to have normal bowels again, wouldn't that be wonderful! Some things that people with normal bowels take for granted (as my boyfriend says).

I'm a "C" and I think "D" would be worse. I may be in pain more from it all staying in, but I'm not tied to a GPS that has all the bathroom locations programed in for the sudden need at any given moment.

Kree....interesting how we think the reverse of what we have is the worst. Good psyc. study is right.

I'd have to agree D is worse, C can be very uncomfortable, but not as uncomfortable has having D and not being anywhere near a bathroom! And Kandee - I actually just bought a handheld GPS, awesome little toy! getting all the bathrooms programmed in right now

I'm a C but I have been both and I have to say that D is worse. Spending hours in the bathroom is awful! C can be painful but more managable.

I've been reading everyone's reply and feel enlightened. I guess bec. I have almost always been C. This is very interesting. Most of the time I wish I was D bec. I am so miserable. In my case I am as needy of a bathroom all the time as some say w/D.I have to stay home all morning or until I finish going to the bathroom. It's like it takes me an hr. to relax in that area each day enough to go.Then I only go a little,so I try to distract myself by doing something mundane. I have to keep going just a little all morning. Doing any exercise or running an errand will stop the system for the rest of the day. Then I just feel like my stomach is stretched and hard and sore all day and prob. until the next day or whenever I can get straightened out.
If for some reason I have to leave the house early I spend all day attending to my stomach and rushing to find a bathroom whenever I have the slightest twing that might be a call to "go".It's also a day full of gas and trying to avoid being around anyone when that hits.It just feels awful to be clogged up.Nothing fits and I don't want to do anything.I hate this,so I try real hard to avoid it.
I know a lot of it is tied to anxiety which I need to work on.
I just returned from visiting my daughter for 2 weeks and it was so hard to avoid a major problem w/my tummy.
I often feel like a prisoner to my bowels, guess everyone else here does too. Thanks for all the replies and th question. Suzy

I actually got the GPS as a back up in case the one in the plane fails, I'm programming all the airports that I fly to in, but since there's no washroom in the plane I fly, it's also the nearest washrooms

D. While C has been a problem as of late with D you have to make sure a washroom is nearby.

Jamie,

I'd forgotten you were a pilot. What do you fly, a DeHaviland? Caribou?
My hubby is a retired pilot (USAF)and says Canada had some awesome STOL aircraft.

Having a GPS is a great idea as a plane backup, not to mention bathroom locations!

Don't know why I even made that original mention of a GPS. Guess I was just thinking that if I were a "D" and I knew where I was going I'd want all the bathroom locations programed in. Being a "C" I just have to worry about always having enuf fiber along, in fact more than normal doses since travel always backs me up more than usual.

Kandee,

I used to fly as a co-pilot on a Cessna Conquest that was used as an Air Ambulance. Now I fly little single engine 6 and 8 seater Cessna's doing charter flights. Mostly 'Bush' flying to all the Isolated Native Reserves up north. It's definitely fun and challenging.

What planes did your husband fly?

Jamie,

Your job indeed sounds fun and challenging. Bush piloting I understand is the only way to keep it exciting. It's to bad you have to deal with the IBS at the same time. (Planning, planning, planning?)

Planes hubby flew:
B-52's, HH-3, UH-1, North American Sabreliner...
He flew HH-3E's rescue in Viet Nam (Jolly Green Giants) and trained Special Operations rescue pilots world wide.
His pilot career spanned 28 years, and I swear would pay them if he could still fly.

Me? I just fly my broom now and then

I guess I think IBS-C is worse because...

1) It's all STUCK inside you... food moves and gurgles (loudly) and when it moves it causes more discomfort.

2) Bloating... wow, it's hard to find clothes you want to go out in public in

3) Gas... not to sound gross... but either you can't pass the gas (horrible) or your flactulance smell HORRID... you have to be really careful, it's like dropping a BOMB!

4) You gain weight easier... just trust me on this

5) Sometimes the mixture of food in your stomach makes it hurt so bad it's just undescribable. I feel like I'm in a constant state of discomfort. My friends might ask me how I am doing-- if I feel okay... I don't know what it feels like to feel okay... I don't know what normal feels like anymore I just say could be better or could be worse... ya know?

Of course, if I had IBS-D, I'd have my own set of reason why it's worse. I haven't experienced IBS-D, so I can't say for sure whether it's worse. I think we are all up a "something" crick without a paddle (other than this diet, Heather, and every other supportive person on this site:)). And I know this is horrible, but I sometimes wish I had IBS-D, or knew how to turn my IBS-C into IBS-D, just so I could get this food out of me Oh well, I guess if it was the other way around, I'd wish for the opposite.

It's just my opinion/view though...

I can tell each and every one of you why C is better to have than D. After having a nice breakfast with people you hardly know, you go to the airport to fly home and all of a sudden you just start "emptying out". No warning, no cramps, no spasms, no control. No way would I choose D over C. Feel fortunate if you have C, at least you have it inside and not outside.

Wow, my eyes are actually tearing up reading these responses. I wish we could all be healed of this!! I am a "D". I think it is worse being "D". I had to quit working a year ago because of it! Also with "D", one is more likely to become dehydrated and malnoursihed quicker. I am so tired of my GI tract. I would give just about anything to be normal again. I have been doing Heather's IBS diet and it has improved. The hard thing is not knowing when I'm going to be bombed with an attack! I have missed my own birthday party, family camping trips, trips home to California, working...the list goes on.

I am a prominent D person, however the D doesn't bother me as long as I don't have all the pain, nausea, labor pains, vomiting from the pain, etc., however I do find after an episode of D, which can last 5-6 times a night or 5-6 days in a row, I become C, I don't get really uncomfortable with the C unless 3-4 days has gone by, than I start to panic. I feel everyone's pain, I had to quit my job, due to my D and stress last August. I only work the nursing pool, which is nice. But as someone else said, just to sit down at eat what I really want to and live through it......What a dream. Good Luck everyone.

I'd have to say D! And I agree with the others who have said the worst part of it is not being near a bathroom. But actually the worst part is for those of us who suffer with the incontinence issue D is incredibly awful. There are many days I wished I was C. I'm sure in reality each is equally awful but I think we each think the other side has it easier. On my really bad days I would take a puzzle book into the bathroom and get through six or seven crosswords. I keep novels in the bathroom too! And you don't dare leave the house. I missed so many things due to my D. Yes, I have the cramping and stuff too! That's my two cents.

For me, the D is worse! The C is no big joy, either. With the C, I end up uncomfortable and miserable and exhausted With the D, I end up uncomfortable and miserable and exhausted with the lovely addition of worrying that I won't be making it all the way to the potty in time!

C to me is worse because I am predominantly C, and I've had D and for me, at least SOMETHING is coming out, even though I have cramping occasionally. With C, NOTHING -- I mean, NOTHING-- is happening in there. Not to mention the gas that is so horrible I feel awful for my husband and I feel horribly unattractive, and the abdominal bloating which is painful and makes nothing fit! Having the "urge" to go and then just sitting there on the toilet for 20 minutes while nothing happens is very upsetting and frustrating, because your stomach just hurts and you feel sick and you can't do anything to "speed things up". Plus that, you hate eating even when you're starving because it makes you feel WORSE after, like there is an undigested brick in your stomach just fermenting, causing more pain. There's my two cents.

Jen

I am IBS-C with IBS-D only when I eat that Flatbread chicken sandwich thing at McDonalds. This food item has made me decide IBS-D would be worse than C. I can control the C with fiber supplements and can control the bloating and pain with avoiding those foods that cause me gas or painful spasms.
With C I can go out and eat with friends and not worry about having to make it to a bathroom. I can go to the movies with them afterwards and not spend most of the time in the ladies room.
I think D would be so much more disruptive of my life.

Definitely IBS-D. I'm IBS-D and I find it difficult to really eat outside. You always have that fear of not finding a bathroom in time. I know IBS-C is really uncomfortable and painful but that crushing urge with IBS-D makes you not want to eat anything other than plain rice or bread outside.

I am also going to agree with Jen here. I have been battling IBS-C for years. My first memories were when I was 19 years old (I am 37 now). I was diagnosed with Gastroenteritis (sp?) numerous times until 2 years ago.

I don't know how many times in my life that I prayed for the big D. I ended up hooked on laxatives in order to have a BM. Going 14 days without a BM became somewhat normal in the 90's (hence the laxative addiction). I have 2 sizes of clothes. My normal size 8's and my IBS days size 10's.

I am finally getting it all together (the past year). It took a major lifestyle change. But now, I can go out with friends and not end up with beads of sweat on my forehead and upper lip from the pain of my gut. I don't have to cancel engagements because suddenly my clothes don't fit. I don't need to call in sick, in case my laxatives start working.

I've mostly had D, but had an episode of C over the weekend, and have had a few before. I prefer C! My D hits me anywhere from 1 to 2 hours after eating, which includes while at work! It is so embarassing to be in the BR for 10-15 minutes, because every time I think I'm done, I'm not. Plus, we all know that IBS smells awful. I am probably paranoid. When I have D, I always get very pale, and co-workers ask me if I'm okay. And the bloating for me is just as bad during D as during C, and painful, and already being overweight and having fertility problems (thanks to PCOS)- looking 6 months pregnant is not my idea of a good time.
I'm sorry, because I know that those suffering with C are just as miserable, but I'd prefer it, if given a choice.
