How much sleep is enough/too much

I've been sleeping about 12 hours a night and sometimes I'm still tired enough to nap during the day! My hubby sometimes says I sleep too much (actually, I only do this when I feel sick. On a regular night I seem to need 9-10 hours of sleep). I know everyone is diff...but 9-10 hours isn't too much, is it?

I don't think 9-10 hours is too much, Ruchie! Everyone's body is different, and we all need different amounts of sleep to function at our best. I know I feel dead with less than 7, but my body prefers 9! If you are able to get 9-10 hours of sleep a night I say go for it, there's nothing wrong with that at all!

Well i tend to get between 5-7 hours which i know is not enough. But i am an insomniac and refuse to take any sort of sleeping remedy as i believe in natural sleep.
I thought the average was about 8. But i have a friend who must have 10 otherwise they can not function.
On the flip side i nend to have narcoleptic tendencies sometimes when performing sedate tasks (like typing this for example). I can quite quickly and without warning just fall asleep for a few seconds or minutes at a time.
Oh well. We can't all have perfect sleep / digestion patterns.

Hey there, Cutie-Pie!
Good for you! Ten hours of sleep?! You go, Girl! Your body obviously needs it, or you wouldn't be sleeping as you are. Your little body has gone through a lot; I would relish the sleep if I were you.
Everyone is different, every body needs a different amount of sleep. And I heard it's not how MUCH sleep that one gets, but the QUALITY of that sleep that counts.
It takes a lot to get me to sleep; my mind is always working overtime, so I need a lot of "encouragement" to get me to stop thinking and relaxing. (Thus, Michael's tapes are a Godsend for me.) On the other hand, hubby falls asleep at the drop of a pin! He drives a van for mentally and physically-challenged people, and it's really important that he stay awake. He takes naps a lot during the day and during breaks. He'll be out on the road, driving, and when he drops off his passengers, he'll pull over and stop, turn off the engine, tell himself "just ten minutes," immediately fall asleep, and wake up ten minutes later, wide awake! AMAZING. It works for him, and it's obviously what his body wants. He doesn't fight it.
I read -- or heard on the news -- that it's really beneficial for people, especially those under stress, to get "catnaps" in the middle of the day if at all possible. If you have the opportunity to do so, GOFERIT!
Your biggest fan, Bev

I often sleep that much too! If I don't have AT LEAST 8-9 hours, I'm a bear! If I can get 10 I feel better!

It depends on the time of year for me: in the fall, when we're losing a lot of daylight, I cannot get enough sleep. I'm at about 8-8.5 now as the days get longer, but if we had a good bout of clear weather, I would probably want less.
Everyone is different - don't try to force yourself to be "normal" or "average"!

You must be sleeping for me then. I can't seem to sleep well lately. I say enjoy it if you can sleep that much and if you are not feeling sluggish all day than you must need it.

I'm so envious of people like your hubby who can fall asleep anywhere! My college roommate was like that. We'd go to bed and I'd hear her snoring within 2 minutes, and sometimes it took me hours to fall asleep. It just doesn't seem fair, does it??

When my IBS is acting up all I want to do is sleep. I understand how you feel. Sometimes I feel I'm sleeping my life away, but I get so tired. Go for it - whenever I'm tired I take a nap if I can.

TOO MUCH!?!?!?
Hi Ruchie. We seems to have a lot in common, you and I! I usually need about 8-9 hours of sleep. Well, growing up, I used to need 8. Over the last 2 years or so it's grown to 9 hours. Now, with the IBS and my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, it's more like 12 is the desirable goal, especially when I'm sick like today. But unfortunately it's not easy to get that kind of sleep! I'd have to go to sleep as soon as I get home from work. Right now I feel like there's no such thing as TOO MUCH SLEEP! I say sleep as much as your body tells you to as long as you're not getting groggy and sluggish. *jen

Loads of good advice here, Ruchie! I just wish I had the time to get more sleep. Everyone need different amounts of sleep - there is NO "normal", just an average.
Just a thought...you have thyroid troubles in the family, yeah (or is that someone else )? Had your levels checked recently?
Anyway...snooze away, girl! If your man needs less sleep, then he has more time to help out around the house! My HTB gets up 2 HOURS after me when we're both working during the week and I keep trying to get him to get up half an hour earlier to do chores, but it's like I'm speaking a foreign language! Men!
