For me, it was a pooping issue. I was tired of the "rabbit droppings," and after reading all the posts in here I wondered whether all the antibiotics I had taken for all my bladder infections had wiped out all my "good gut flora." The posts I read said basically that the probiotics couldn't hurt me, so I figured what the heck I'd give them a try.

I was pleasantly surprised; I no longer have rabbit droppings and my poops are much more satisfying. There, that was subtle enough, wasn't it? Did I gross anyone out?

By the way, you'll love that Equalactin. I keep it in my emergency medicine cabinet (in my purse) and use it when I get an attack on the road. It works much quicker than my meds, and when I have an intense attack, I take both. Thankfully, now those attacks are fewer and far between.

I too have had too many anti-biotics, especially Cipro for infection in my case of prostate.

Thanks for note.

Hi again ArtKen,

Here is something you may want to read:
web page

I do know if you are ever on antibiotics, for anything, you should be taking a LOT of probiotics at the same time. I've had my doc tell me to take 2 caps with ever meal, when my IBS was at it's worst. Now, these caps ( which are Ultra Flora Plus-DF, by Metagenics) contain, in just ONE, 7.5 billion Lactobacilllus acidophilus and 7.5 billion Bifidobacterium lactis. You do the math. That's a lot. I don't even think you can overdose on them. I now (religiously) take one with the morning meal, and one with the evening.......that's 15 billion of each strain daily. I do NOT notice a difference in it affecting constipation, one way or another, but according to the above information, it can. I think, as we age taking probiotics on a regular basis is just a smart practice, since nothing seems to work as good as it once did, unfortunately.

I'm also a firm believer in digestive enzymes and happen to think anyone over the age of 50 should use them as a digestive aid....but that's just my opinion.

I too, have diverticulosis, but it's mild.

I think you will have to decide what AMOUNT is right for you.

BTW, watch expiration dates, probiotics which are live cultures, have a short life span. They should stay refrigerated as well.

Maybe this helps.

ArtKen,
Hope that it helps. I know that the brand I use has done wonders for me. Both allowing me to have regular BM's and for overfall comfort.
Bevrs-
I have been using Jarro as well and am so thankful for it. I was wondering if you (or anyone)have found any information that states whether or not it is safe to stay on it forever if needed. I hate to think of giving it up and do not plan too unless I had too.
Just wondering
thanks

Yes, there's a lot; ShawnEric has posted many articles on probiotics, so you might do a search for his name. Here's one: web page Also search for "Attn: Shawneric / Unable to access Harvard probiotic article" -- and others (they're very lengthy -- but extremely informative).

Have not heard of anything about not being safe over long periods. According to local naturopath it is quite beneficial. Of course there may be medical doctor's who who while saying it will not do harm question the need for them rather than just trying to obtain in other ways, such as food. My own doctor is neutral on the subject. His opinion is if it can work for you well go for it.

I have an old medical book written in 1927 by a Dr. Clendening called The Human Body. He goes into some detail re acidophilus Bacidophilus back then expressing opinion that how beneficial they were and would help in the reduction of people taking harsh laxatives. But he adds that his opinion is not generally agreed upon by other physicians. But he predicted that in future more attention would be given to it.

Thanks. Did watch for expiration dates,

Do you also take a fiber supplement? My doctor advises me to take Metamucil daily or something equal.

Check out my response to kctrun in this thread. ShawnEric posted quite a few articles on this subject, which are extremely informative, and should answer many of your questions -- and more! Do a search in this board for "ShawnEric" and "probiotics" -- you'll have enough reading to keep you out of trouble for at least a few hours.
